Energy prices - gone nuts.

Anyone got any energy saving ideas, in addition to the obvious 3:
1. turn your thermostat down 1 or 2 degrees, wear more clothes, ignore your wife/kids moaning - they will shut up after a few days as they acclimatise
2. replace all your old incandescent lightbulbs with LED versions. (yes, your pin counts too - ha ha )
3. switch off / unplug any appliances that are not being used and on standby.

If I lived alone I'd consider trying one of these (that would be the throw, not the blonde).

For an evening in front of the TV or computer I'd see how it worked out to turn the heating off and heat only me and not the entire house.

Or to be really extreme :

all the little DC adaptors you have plugged in can be pretty ugly.

pretty sure the blond would keep you warm too.
Hmmm. More likely she would insist on turning up the thermostat so the house “warms up quicker” before then throwing open the windows and moaning “it’s too hot in here”

I’ve given up tryouts not to explain how heating/aircon works in my classroom. It’s a constant cycle of girls trying to heat/cool the room rather than leaving the bloody thing alone 🤬

The Costs figures must be well old, on BG standard variable the "Large House" usage would currently be £242/month, rising to £373/month as of 1st April. Fixes for the same usage would be over £500 a month, hence why for most if makes sense staying on the capped variable.
The MSE cheap energy club is still providing quotes for a few suppliers if you know your usage https://clubs.moneysavingexpert.com/cheapenergyclub

Oh cool, thanks! I will have a look at that later this morning

Thats why you can cut from the bottom up.... especially on large items like that... Just a little care needed on Kickback... Cut 1/3rd of the way through from the top, then cut up from the bottom around 3-4" offset (1" for a small one).. you are right tho.. may need a longer bar...
Looks like I'm already maxed out at 20" bar on the 028 AVS. I've got some massive 2 man vintage forestry saws which could do the job and provide a good workout.

My gf dad say's hes going back to using a wood burner as they are all retired and mostly spend time in the living room it makes sense to just heat that one room, he rekens the heat will travel quite well around the house.

I am not to worried as we are coming into spring so gas will start to drop off to barley anything for us (just comes on twice a day to heat the water) so gas usage will be low, Electric will sting a little though. Probably should turn off all the garden lights that stay on until 1am hehe.

But the prices are worrying :( I have quite a few friends who this will hit hard :( Its not just energy its petrol/diesel and food and pretty much everything going up but wages remain the same! Good lucky any one getting on the housing market these days when all your spare cash is getting wasted on basic living expenses :(

Is this new price cap that we've all been getting our new monthly figures based on actually nailed down? because clearly things have become a lot worse in the last 2 weeks since that was set.

I think its set for April but its allowed to be updated again in Oct so will probably be another jump then?

We are about the same as you for electric, a converted Victorian school so not small😏
No oil or gas here though, logs and anthracite for big stove. Burned a ton of anthracite since autumn that cost £400, used less this year plus free logs.

And that’s with upstairs not being used or heated as kids at uni or moved out and married!

19000 kwh Electric - what is that powering?

Lighting, Cooking, Air Con in games room, Heater in She Shed, a fair bit of network/NAS stuff

Cant get house below 1Kwh, when I go to bed at night

You using halogen for lighting or something? I replaced everything with LEDs abit back.

Just picked up some anthracite, no price change. While there asked about heating oil prices and they are charging £1.32 a litre and could hear loads of arguments on phones and the old birds answering the phones moaning about customers😂
Even at that price they were saying the demand is high and struggling to deliver oil as not enough drivers!

I see tree rustlin' and fuel tank theft going up then.... "Keep 'em peeled."

God.....i remember when we moved in here we had an anthracite boiler. Great heat when up and running, but I always found it a total ballache to get it lit. I remember coming back from working abroad one time to find my wife using my gas roofing gun to try and get it going. A tad dangerous....but certainly effective!

Moved over to oil which has been great....but kept a couple of woodburners in as well, just in case. Checked here and coal still the same.....but apparently its getting outlawed

1kwh is quite high, mine is 200wh but is basically just the fridge/freezer and various devices in idle mode. (router, deco's, tv, sky, usb chargers, garage doors etc...)

No boilers here, just use it for a big stove that chucks out loads of heat. Easy to light in mine but another chore cleaning it and dumping the ash.
All going to be electric sooner or later.

My other house that I totally redid a few years ago had a new ext. oil burner/tank etc and that cost not far off £8k and I put a new wood burner in at £1k, my daughter rents it and it’s a decent size 3 bed and I think it only uses one tank of oil a year of 1200 litres. But here I am living in the dark ages, might have to go twig scavenging soon😂

Gas roofing gun great idea, I just use a blow torch to get the kindling going. Think I need to upgrade!

People going to start by passing electric meter at this rate dreading coming off my fixed rate in Feb due to having a 17kw air source heat pump that needs to run constantly to keep the house warm.

So glad I had two log burners installed this year when I don’t have the kids I only use them.
