Ebay Auctions 2014

Word of warning if anyone was thinking of getting the baby Pacman due to finish in a few hours...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/291161826434

Went to see it the other night... Bad wear in a couple of places on the PF, Cp reasonable, Solenoid gone, audio "ropey" screen again ropey and other suspect issues. I was interested before i went to see it - definitely not any more! So not only a good few hundred quid to put right, but a suspect machine at best....

the cabinet looks ok, but he's missed a trick by not taking any pics of the playfield close up, or of it switched on, or of the DMD working etc etc etc.

also expensive, though he does say he will take offers. mine is going back to where it came from (which was a condition of its sale, sorry @Gaz Shiells) for the same price as i paid, ie several hundred less than this one.

Anyone on here after the populated but knackered Paragon playfield that's on eBay at the moment? I quite fancy it to help finish my project but don't want to get into a bidding war with a fellow PinballInfo user if we're looking to get different parts. Mostly I want the actual plywood playfield itself.

Did anyone on here get the Time Fantasy that ended last night? I was winning with a minute to go but ended up being outbid by three people!

Always best to snipe at the end of the auction, never bid during.

Because it just increases the price, if for example i wanted that Time Fantasy i would have bid £850 with 5 secs to go. Job done.

Why is that? It's something I know to be true but don't understand.

If you bid before the few seconds then you're bumping up the final price - if you win then you've been bumping up what you'll be paying...

Sniping is a very last second bid that is unlikely to be beaten as others can't respond in time. Apparently there is software out there that can do it for you although I've never used it myself.

As much as 5 secs  You better upgrade your computer and internet upload speed...! ;)

Sniping also prevents YOU from getting carried away in the heat of things and paying more than you wanted to. Just decide what's the maximum you'd be happy to pay and bang it in the last few seconds.

Yes but if I decide I want to pay a max of (say) £850 for an item, if I bid that then eBay will increment my visible bid until the bidding reaches or exceeds £850 at which point it will stop, so I won't get carried away. If somebody bids more then so be it.

Yes but as a sniper you " may " be the only one using the sniping strategy, everyone else watching thinking they are going to get the item cheap then you jump in at the last minute. If none else has done the same you are onto a winner. I just think that an item is more likely to climb in price with early bidding, almost guaranteed really.

Bidding earlier also allows other people (including those shill bidding) to push up the price that you'll ultimately pay. The closer to the end of bidding you submit your bid then the less opportunity there is for them to do this.

In that respect at least eBay is a bit broken. I rarely bid until the closing minutes because of this very reason.

I never bid until the last 5 seconds and I always decide the absolute maximum I'd pay in the days approaching the end and stick to it. If, at 5 seconds, my maximum hasn't been reached I hit the bid button at the 2-3 second point. By the time the request has been sent and the page reloaded I know straight away if I've won or not. Usually I've won and paid less than my maximum. If not, then it's because someone else bid a huge amount earlier and my last second bid triggered them to auto-outbid me. I don't feel bad because it's gone for more than my absolute maximum which I had already decided I wouldn't pay more than. Happy days :)

I used to snipe, but these days I don't I find it is often better to put in at least partial early bids, that way the seller doesn't end the auction early (or is less likely) these days when an auction has no bids and only a day to go, someone contacts the seller offering them a ridiculously low price. The seller panics as there are no bids and all the people waiting for their snipes to execute are left p1ssed off that the auction eneded early

Good point on sellers pulling 0 bid auctions. I guess I've not been in that situation!

If I find an item I want with 0 bids then I put in a price below my realistic max but then check back later. I usually snipe, I know of several people who claim it ruins ebay for other people and I appreciate their point but ebay have a fix time, the buyer is not rewarded for early bidding wars that allow someone with more money to bid at the end.

But recently, over the last year at least, I have not bid on anything. Most 'new' items can be found cheaper somewhere else and most secondhand stuff goes for more than I am prepared to pay. :(

I find ebay great for little items..

Need some 1k resistors... 99p spent and 100 turn up.. etc.
