What pin would you like to see at Pinfest?

Sgt Grizz your popeye was mine at one time and I still have the swords of fury that I swapped it for. To add to the history I bought the popeye in Hong Kong around 2003 out of the back of a 10 pin bowling alley that was in the old airport building. It was alongside 3 others I bought at same time and they were literally just behind the pins in the alley. It was so noisy in there with all the resetting of the bowling pins. In 2004 I moved to Malaysia and the machine came with me. It was actually smuggled into malaysia as I didn't have a gaming licence that was required to own them in Malaysia. They hid it at the back of the container of furniture along with 4 others and we hoped for the best. Unfortunately customs found it and confiscated it alongside the 4 other machines in same container. They gave me the option of 1. Have them destroyed. 2. Re-export. 3. Pay for them to store whilst i set up a company and licenced the company to run an amusement arcade. Clearly no 3 wasn't going to work and no 1 was last resort. So I had the machines re-exported down to Singapore by the same moving company. They then smuggled the 5 machines back across the causeway from Singapore to Malaysia in the back of somebody else's household contents container. It took about 3 months from leaving Hong Kong to getting the 5 machines including popeye delivered to my house in penang malaysia. Fortunately when I returned to the UK in 2007 customs here just saw them as household contents so I didn't have to deal with the same. In Malaysia I was always in fear that I would get a knock at the door and they would confiscate the machines.

From memory I think it had dm coin slots on it too as did a lot of machines that were in Asia. So it may well have started out life in Germany.

Your popeye certainly has some history.

I would love to see a popeye at pinfest.

And I still have your swords of fury.

Paul !

Amazing . Hope you are well . I completely forgot the Asia connection on the old spinach guzzler, he really has sailed the seven seas in the good ship Popeyes Ark ! I do remember now you saying about that when we met. Think it was at UK Pin Show 2009 , Pins Anon last one, wasn’t it that we swapped the games.

Glad to hear you still have the Swords, that was a nice one iirc.

Cheers. Good to connect again.

What a fantastic story . . . love it

There's always a great selection at Pinfest, but a few I would love to see:

Godzilla
Joker Poker
Whodunit
The Hobbit
I will probably bring Godzilla premium along with 3 more of the latest titles same drill as last year if big phil gives his blessing I will put them in the reception area of the hotel on pay per play with all the proceeds going to a charity to be decided

Yes he has sailed the 7 seas. It was 2009. I can't believe it was so long ago.

Would be great if there is a centaur, that’s deffo one game I’ve never seen, and would love to play

Absolute classic - looks stunning, incredible sounds, great play. My first experience of pinball was Centaur in the early 80s. It lurked in a dark corner of our local arcade - I was a video game kid and didn’t really understand pinball at that time. The Centaur was quite intimidating and It was mostly played by older scary looking types 😄
Was lucky enough to have loan of one here for about 6 months.

There was one at Pinball Republic but doesn't appear to be there anymore 😔 not sure if sold or just removed
Yeah think it was there the first time I visited. But I was so overwhelmed by the amount of pins, especially the new sterns, that I kind of overlooked it, epic fail on my part 🤦‍♂️

They seem to rotate stuff in and out regularly at Pinball Republic:
  • There was a Flintstones for a bit.
  • There's currently a Fish Tales (the first I've seen since I bought mine last July).
  • MM disappeared for a bit (BOOOO!).
  • ST:TNG disappeared for a bit after breaking down (BOOO!) and... when it returned, promptly broke down.
  • There's currently a Flash Gordon (which isn't half as exciting as I expected given its reputation)
There doesn't seem to be a huge turnover of the older (early/pre-1980s) pins, although a Gigi EM appeared during the first London League, and my five year old became completely obsessed with it...

A few games owned by Matt are rotated as they're rented out via London Pinball as far as I know.
That's why MM disappeared then came back.
Same with Monster Bash.

I suppose some get sold or swapped with games at home by various owners too

Mostly just Matt's games although Space Shuttle will be swapped for Jackbot whilst it gets a new playfield soon.

ming is merciless! and you must have lasted about 20 seconds on it with the mega score of 91760! :D

I'll miss Space Shuttle - it's one of my favourite Sys 11s, but am keen to try a Jackbot and it does need a new playfield.

Yeah, but I lasted about 20 seconds on everything except for Tommy which, for some reason, my husband and I find a piece of pish (relatively speaking).

Bizarrely, I find Tommy a completely mediocre pin despite being better at it than anything else in there (and going by the scores, this isn't everyone's experience), which just goes to show there isn't a correlation between doing well on something and liking it.

I knew FG had a reputation for being hard, especially because of the low triad of bumpers, but the bumpers simply weren't as snappy and exciting as I expected. I've played it a few times now and I haven't felt, if I persisted in playing, it was going to abruptly become exciting. The lack of good effects doesn't help here - Flash Gordon is a 'so bad it's good' film and the pin doesn't quite capture the campy joy. It could really do with some decent music and sound effects.

Vee,

I've always thought of Space Shuttle as an 'honorary' System 11, even though it pre-dates alpha displays. The one work still had running when I joined in 1989 was photographed (in the early 90's) for Keith Temple's book, maybe due to the playfield not being down to the wood. The mylar which was to thank for this was dreadful, but it had worked.

Now that I'm in the thread, has anyone gathered together at a show the by-products of Hyperball/Rapid Fire? i.e. Time Fantasy, Defender and Firepower II, Eight Ball Deluxe LE, Centaur II and M&M Pac-Man?

I did even worse on Flash Gordon, it really was merciless - I had two insta drains from the ball plunge, it went straight down the ramp and down the hole. Absolutely gutted! (It didn't seem to happen to anyone else 😂)

The Scarborough thread reminded me that I'd love to try the Beatles. Or even the one that's very similar - Sea Witch? Maybe they could be side by side at the show!

I am reliably informed that my old Popeye is the one now at Pinball Office, so you can enjoy playing the Popeye that really has sailed the 7 seas when you visit.

Paul

Alas I believe the worlds greatest pinball machine is being removed from the PO lineup 😥😥😥

It's worth noting that Keith Elwin not only learnt his formidable pin skills on Popeye but it was also the inspiration for all of his designs.

I'm reliably informed that CGC are using the theme for their next remake. Barry Stern is seething about it apparently because he wanted that licence beyond all others.
