Stern Ghostbusters

I don't think Aerosmith would sell very well anymore, to be honest. Iron Maiden is pretty much certain from someone soon - allegedly 'a pinball company' has bought a license for 2017. Not a fan of the 'pick a tune and it just plays' approach though, I prefer songs being tied to modes - situational audio is a huge part of pinball for me.

I hate normal slingshots because they cause so many outlane drains. I saw the video and it looks like they just need to cut the magnet sooner, problem is the ball was passing the magnet while it was still on. I'm fine with a strangely behaving slower slingshot that sometimes does incredibly odd things like putting the ball directly into the inlane behind it or bouncing the ball against itself for a bit, as long as it's fun. I have a deposit on a Premium, we shall see - I think it's going to be at least a couple of months before those ship.

Always with the ageing rock bands.
If they must do a music pin why not something like Kraftwerk ?

Nobody would buy it. It's got to be something that appeals to a wide age group and rock bands seem to do really well in that respect. You can't have something kids will look at and accuse of being 'dads music' while walking away with an expression of embarassment.

Back on topic:

I managed to get a few games on GB in the states so can give my 2p's worth:

GB is an absolutely brutal outlane drain monster, thanks to the double metal clad in lanes (think left hand Avatar on both sides). To help the the sling can propel the ball over the lot and straight down the out lane. Also had a sling over theright hand plastic then roll off and drop in to the outlane. They have really stacked a number of modes or features that all start together when the ball is collected in one of the holes, this can overwelm the player a lot until you 've played it a good few times and know what to shoot for. It seems that the code is far more complete than many recent offerings, which is a good thing given the amount of modes or features that can get started in one shot (in to start feature hole).

One of the two PRO's had an extra sensitive slimer that was activating when it shouldn't have been leading to some big scores and features without being earned properly (I think this may have been altered or corrected later on).

Looks great and plays nice as any NIB machine will.

Not sure why there are plastic stops half way down in each outlane... I speculate that the premium and LE may have a kickback on each side and that the PRO's plastic stops are to stop ball jams where a kickback might go. However, the holes in the side of the apron that the plastics sit in front of don't look big enough for kickback plungers... :hmm: Could be they're there to slow the ball down when it's draining I guess...

I think you have it @rse over tît. Wrestlemania is aimed at a younger audience and Stern had to move into a bigger factory because they couldn't sell them.

Mounting points for the proton pack feature which was removed for cost reasons. Left on for "possible future upgrades" and people are generally of the opinion that they'll be working with Mezelmods on something you can buy to fit there.

I was wondering about outlane drains with those slingshots angled the way they are, maybe this really was designed around the magnetic ones. They're almost facing eachother.

As for Kiss v Kraftwerk, really? You know what - I'd love a 70s Genesis or a Jarre pin, but it's not a guy playing loud rock music in a glitzy stage show, and it's not 'cool' or 'edgy' which most big rock bands appear to be able to distill and hold in a bottle until they eventually die. Rock music is better in bars too.

Wish I knew. I hope it's not one of those 'nobody will know until 2 years down the road' things.

Any idea if these magnetised slings increase playfield wear? Or not an issue?
I'd say yes, and I wonder if that's why they haven't programmed the magnets to hold/catch the ball. Like on The Shadow's sanctum, holding the ball damages the playfield over time. Looking at how Stern's shooter lane wears, playfield quality isn't what is used to be.

I had an AC/DC with shooter lane wear already, what's that going to be like in 20 years?

I would say no. How many TAFs have you seen with wear on the magnets? Zero.... if the magnet pulse is only a pulse and not a hold it won't wear.

Speaking of music pins. Perfect time for a David Bowie / Ziggy Stardust table. I can imagine how colourful the art would be.

I would guess yes. Surely they drag the ball more than rolling it? Though they clearly don't propel the ball as fast ... so maybe less wear by sling ... more further out?

Well they'll cause it to roll towards them but as the ball approaches the magnet more of the drag will be downwards. However if they're wanting sling-like action really that magnet wants to be cutting out before the ball is directly over it, or it'll start working like a brake which is exactly what we saw in the early code video. On the other hand a traditional slingshot pushes the ball across the playfield so fast the first few inches aren't going to be rolling at all.

So it's hard to say, I think Phils observation on the TZ ones seems reasonable but it depends what modes the slings might have, and the TZ power area isn't being used that often. I'm lucky (if you can call it that) in that I physically can't play my games that often so other less fortunate people will find out before I have a problem.

Well they are hardly going to post a video showing it doing exactly what a sling kicker does, are they? They show it doing more extreme things as that's what people are wanting info on. You'd have to assume that it will work in other ways too otherwise it would be a stupid waste of time and money developing it.

but you'd think they would show the video of it doing something 'good', even if not traditional sling action (i.e. the purported 'juggling' etc).

Queen would make an awesome pin theme and sell like hot cakes. I'm not a huge fan myself but appreciate their music much more than any of the rock music pins currently out. Don't stop me now multiball?

There was a Pin manufactured based on the Beatles but they had to make sure that it didn't actually infringe copyright.
