Don't forget...tomorrow is meter readings day! What's the betting all the sites go down?

Oh Russ. That is another complex topic with so many variations.
Yes, I have looked into it.
Ground source heat pumps requires a fair amount of ground and digging out. They benefit from a more consistent temperature at the depth they operate at. Therefore in the winter when you want them to heat, they still operate.
Air sourced heat pumps do not need digging and now appeared in air conditioning systems. They can be effected by very low outside temperature, less efficient.

Both systems still require electricity which is 4x more expensive a unit than gas.

Then how passive is your house? How much heat do you lose through the walls, windows and roof. Newer builds are better than our old housing stock.
Heat pumps don’t radiate as much heat so if you are losing heat, you may never get to your desired temperature.
Are you retro fitting to existing radiators? Are they the right bore for the system.

And then you are going to ask when it will repay itself ;).

My house is Edwardian. Roof is now up to spec. Every room is being insulated on the inside. Under suspended floors on the ground will be insulated. I am looking to use an air sourced heat pump integrated with my boiler in the future if I can find someone who has done that and is certified.
My house has a Air Source system a 17kw Samsung and a holiday let I did with a 5kw system.

My house is terrible and with the cost of electric as it is the thought of a 17kw unit going constantly scares me. But I only live in it two nights a week spend my life in hotels in London and the house is empty but it’s a big 1950’s detached so you can’t just instantly heat it up.

Had two log burners put in last year and that’s helped massively.

The RHI is what tempted me towards air source and the systems have nearly payed for themselves in the 7 years you get the money.

Now the holiday let is a old jail house that we fully rebuilt from scratch minus 3 external walls so is fully up to spec with insulation in the walls floor slabs and roof and with a full underfloor heating works brilliantly and is only a 5kw system.

So my take is if it’s up to modern insulation specs then it’s a viable option if not don’t touch. My hand was forced in both properties in not having mains gas connection.

You were bang on!

F%$*!ng crooks!
Yeah, Octopus Energy website not working, just refreshing then booted me out with a message saying they are very busy. Managed to submit via their app, though it took me three attempts before I could log in to it

They didn’t scale their systems for this and I can’t blame them, I don’t see that as malicious intent.
Sending a reading tomorrow is likely to not result in a massive pence change in billing. They will take the reading and estimate for end of yesterday. They are going to do that until Midnight today anyway.

True, good point, though I'm more concerned about the amount of time I'm wasting on this.

I was supposed to have a smart meter installed yesterday and they didn't turn up. The Chat Bot kicks you out if you ask to submit a meter reading. I'm currently 72 in the queue on chat, and I'm only allowed into the queue by trying to re-book the smart meter install....so hoping to sneak readings in too.

Got a text from British gas this morning, to reply with readings. So no phone call, or website access needed. I’ll attach photos as well, so there’s no tomfoolery!

Did you sign up to the texting service? If not, what's the number? The only texting info I can find is a number that's no longer in use

Can’t ever remember signing up for texting service tbh
When they normally ask for meter readings, my wife gets an email, which she responds to. So not sure why I’ve had a random text today.
Phone number is at the top, if it’s any use to you

Installed the phone app and managed to submit readings on there after a couple of attempts. So if anyone else is struggling that's an option.

Presumably this is a phising attempt if British Gas don't use an SMS based service? That number has been reported for various stuff on many scam-alert websites anyway, so I'd be cautious about sending it anything.

It does sound dodgy. You have to register for the texting service

Yeah definitely suspect
They never normally contact me, it’s always my wife who gets the emails
And never a text message

Just submit your meter readings tomorrow or at the weekend with your end of the day reading and make sure to change the date to the 31st. I know you can date your meter reading on Eon and pretty sure you could do it with Scottish Power as well when I was with them.

No point submitting a meter reading today as you wont know how much power you will use today until midnight, its just people following bad advice to submit a reading today when the advice is really to TAKE a meter reading at the end of the day and submit it for that date.

I also understand why the system would go down, I wouldnt want to massively scale a meter reading system just for a single day when its not really needed if people had any common sense, but as George Carlin used to say think how dumb the average person is and then remember that 50% of the population are dumber than that. And then remember how many people broke their smart phones by following advice to charge it by putting in the microwave or that an OS update suddenly made their phones waterproof.

I would never of thought mass meter reading / submitting panic would have ever been a thing!
What other surprises will we have in 2022!

Got the same text British Gas, but from a different number 07786202425, again dont remember giving them my details

Being a bit thick here
But what would scam numbers get from people sending meter readings ?
I guess the first thing they would get is confirmation that the number is in use and that you can be added to the gullible list for future scams. Other than that I've no idea!
