VPN

So - Question - whats the difference between "Private internet access" and a VPN service??

The judge adds on an extra 20K to your fine for being so dumb.

Back in the day we would a bounce or shell, tunnel thru with SSH.

TV player on the Amazon store is legit. It's basically Freeview down a cable. A lot cheaper too.

I think I've opened a can of worms here!

Ok, I'm going to buy a betamax in the morning and just watch endless runs of the gremlins.

Good idea Dave!
I would seriously re-consider using any VPN.

How do you know your ‘service’ is not being operated by one of the various crime agencies for example.

The Hollywood studios are likely to pursue users ‘pirating’ and illegally downloading or viewing copyrighted material, as they have done in the past.
An old friend of mine was fined £5000 for downloading a movie illegally

They do pounce and hit thousands of unsuspecting users at a time and it will only increase too, the studios are not stupid and they always win.
The chances are you’re on the radar if you’re using a VPN.
It’s not worth the risk

On the Amazon store it's called TVP. It's a paid service. I think the American one that is similar is called perfect player.

Again, I'm not try to download illegal movies or content. I pay for Netflix, Amazon prime movies plus now TV and I don't even have time to watch them. I have no interest in torrents etc.

Why do people on here use VPNs?

Not sure why people need illegal TV anyway, when some of the very best TV is made and broadcast by the great BBC.
#PeakyBlinders is back!

The great BBC has been long since dead. I've not had a TV licence in years, don't need one and will never fund them again. I'll get it on Blu-ray or when Netflix stream it.

Thought you had to have a licence if you had any equipment capable of receiving a TV signal, regardless of wether you used it for that or not.
So any TV with a terrestrial tuner. Or is that not the case anymore?

It's always been if you watch live broadcasts. And why would you let some random stranger in your house to check your TV?

Nope

You only need a TV licence if you watch or record TV as it's being broadcast or use iPlayer – if you only use other catch-up sites, you don't need one.
A rule that came into force in September 2016 means you need a licence to legally use BBC iPlayer, even if you're only watching catch-up TV. But that doesn't apply to other catch-up services, so the ITV Hub, All 4 and My5 are legal to use without a licence as long as you're not using them to watch live TV.

However @Arv is right - you don't need to let anyone in to check anyway. That said, I pay my license fee like most others do thereby keeping the dream alive. I'm community spirited like that...

I guess my question would be now, what with all the opinions here, why have you got a VPN?

What is the 'legit' reason for having one??

Tons of legit reasons, VPNs get used all the time.

Probably most common 'legit' reason is corporate network access. Companies lock down their systems so only those inside their firewalls can access. A user can run a VPN on their laptop which then effectively puts that computer inside that network, as if it was in the office, so that you can access the 'internal' stuff.

It's also used for links between companies - whereas you used to run a direct cable connection of some sort (phone line/fibre), you can now make that connection 'virtual' by using a VPN and routing the packets over the internet. All traffic is encrypted, so nothing on the IP path can see what's going on. Commonly used for VoIP links, credit card links etc.

Back in the day we would a bounce or shell, tunnel thru with SSH.

Most VPNs are really only doing that in a user friendly way, so that any bugger can now do it!

A lot of fake news here, please post a British viewer who has been taken to court and prosecuted,

Same as torrents and illegal copying in the old days, they get the providers not the users in the UK.
A person I knew sociably was a big time pirate of dvds and was prosecuted successfully not for the copying but for image copyright of Disney etc logos and images.

I may be wrong, but don’t believe so, would love to see a few Uk links proving otherwise ......

No you don’t but the court summons you get shortly after can be a pain in the backside!

One of the biggest providers of IPTV in the UK is none other than the BBC (who promote it using the “iPlayer” brand.) To watch any television, broadcast or IPTV, you need a television licence. Like all technologies, it's possible to use it illegally…. but it's not inherently illegal.

There is no fake news Tony several downloaders have been prosecuted, one of my organisations appeared as a witness in one case. The authorities are focused on those that run the sites I agree but downloading content that isn’t licensed is a criminal offence.

Neil

Yeah but it’s an extension of the standard TV service. You can’t get iplayer without paying for normal TV. Specifically I was talking about those who believe they can subscribe to premium TV on the cheap through kodi or other device. They aren’t legal.

I’m surprised you subscribe to Netflix - they mostly make money of other people’s back!

You shouldn’t start a comedy act; you’d be terrible at it.

I don’t think you’ll ever find me speaking about god dood. That’s for the mental.

Unfortunately; on this topic, I’m not able to share things that I’m aware of but in the interests of helping out friends I thought pointing out the risks is helpful.

I run technology for one of the UK’s broadcasters so maybe I have a little insight. Or maybe I’m just talking bull**** and making it up! Hell yes you can decide!

I also advise content holders, content distribution, judiciary, individuals, civil service and government on many technology and security topics.

On pinball I think if you search I’ve usually given a good level of detail about games I like or don’t and why but like ice cream not everybody like mint choc chip and if we did it would be a lot more expensive or sold out a lot more than it is!

The great thing about the Internet though - is that you can make your own mind up that’s why I’m super proud to have been in my trench building it since 1987.

Cheers
Neil.
