Ok, obviously not pinball but some clever buggers on here.

Looking for a VPN. Just read some horror stories about NordVPN and fake reviews etc etc.

Can't get an impartial review from tinternet so any wise words would be greatly appreciated.

I go hunting about and get the cheapest and most well known one thats on offer...

So initially i had IPVanish which was really good. Currently on Windscribe for 3 years at something like £30 (for the 3 years!) and that is just as good (they are very similar). I like windscribe's T&C's also which state that any member of your family can use it... so therefore the kids at uni also use it with no worries at all.

I looked at ipvanish but haven't heard of windscribe. Will take a look.

My main worry is the kids ( aged 12). Currently on virgin with parental controls. Does this all go out the window with a VPN? Don't really want them accessing dodgy porn or violence etc.

Cheers

If parental control are set on the console/pc etc etc then the same will apply over a VPN. If you are relying on Virgin's parental controls then you need all the luck you can get :D

Seriously though, have used IPVanish for years, no criticism with their service at all....

Just be aware that the security and privacy of your VPN is decided by the end point owners!

(I.e. not very)

What are the horror stories about NordVPN? I've been using it for at least a year without problems?

What are you trying to do ie why do you want a VPN?

Despite what many think, it isn't a silver bullet to security or privacy and in fact just moves who knows all about what you're doing, often offshore to some very dodgy places!

Cheers for all the replies. I want to bin all my expensive virgin V6 boxes, not because of the money but because I don't record or really use them.

I'm going to replace with cheap firestick type thing with an iptv service on top. They all recommend a VPN first and not just for US Netflix but for other geo locked content.

With regards to NordVPN, there is a VPN scam site which gives some eye opening details about Nord plus others.

Hmm.. I paid them a small amount of money for 3 years worth of VPN, and it's just worked for me. Where's this VPN scam site then?

Who are you getting the IPTV service from?

If you are doing the VPN so you can’t be detected then you are kidding yourself on. Watch this space on some action on folks with Kodi style boxes!

No, the site is called VPN scam not that Nord VPN is a scam. I'll try and find the link when back at work tomorrow but it compares real world views vs paid bloggers and reviewers. Apparently they spend USD 500k a month on advertising etc etc. If people have a good view of Nord on here great, I'll sign up then.

I'm not trying to be 'undetected' as I have nothing to hide but really just want to watch normal TV without the ridiculous cost of all these boxes a month.

Another private Internet access user here but I'd like to find a better one for the same cost ( £32/year I think). It works but is pretty slow most of the time and drops connection sometimes.

If you don't care about encrypting your traffic to hide it or appearing to be somewhere you are not, then you have no need of a VPN, just get whatever (legal in the UK) IPTV system you want to use, connect it up to your internet connection and off you go.

However, if you actually want to use an illegal system, then you open yourself up to all sorts of issues. VPN detection is not that hard, if the provider wants to do it. Some do, because rights owners are pushing hard or they have their own reasons such as wanting to illegal sharing of logins etc, others aren't that bothered and so its pretty easy to use over VPN.

But, if you encrypt your entire internet usage, then you are transferring the view of EVERYTHING you do on the internet to a pretty well regulated UK based ISP to ????? in some random country. Good luck!

Many thanks for the reply.

I'm not after doing anything illegal so maybe I don't really need a VPN after all. I'll look at more IPTV services as they are cheaper than sky and virgin.

I guess my question would be now, what with all the opinions here, why have you got a VPN?

What is the 'legit' reason for having one??

I thought all IPTV packages were illegal? You're better off with a C-LINE instead of IPTV.

I've used Private Internet Access for a few years with no issues - it's around 40USD a year. I've not researched recently, but I originally picked it because it was effectively (at the time at least) immune from court orders to reveal browsing details - they didn't store those details in log files, and they located themselves, at least on paper I guess, in a jurisdiction that wouldn't comply with requests.

I use it when downloading torrents mainly, but it can also be handy if you want to access content (football in my case) that is geo-restricted - so effectively you pretend that you are in a country that is not geo-restricted using VPN. I don't use it all the time because it stops services like Netflix from working on my PC, otherwise I would, because it makes no performance difference to the browsing experience, so why not...

I know of no legal IPTV service in the UK other than NowTV.

Neil.
