The price of pinball in 2022

On the flip side there’s the possibility that you wait for a NIB, because you refuse to pay £7500 for a used machine and by the time a NIB becomes available it’s £1000 more than you would have paid for the used one!

I just view pinballs as a temporary investment. If you can pull together (or loan) the £5k or so needed to buy one, it's as good as money in the bank.

Need £5k back in 12 months time? Just list the game on here and it will be sold in minutes!

When I got my NIB AIQ it had a bunch of issues out of the box. The small one-way gate below the tower was installed the wrong way round, the right orbit rattled like mad, the coil stops fall apart, the flippers faded after 30mins, etc.

Since then I've spent hours dialing it in and over £1200 on powdercoat, art blades, fans, speakers, plastics, yadda yadda. In my mind it's way better than new. The warranty sure is nice for peace of mind but it's not worth £1000 imho.

If you wanted to get the same package NIB it would set you back 8.5-9 grand. In that respect 7.5k seems like a good deal even if you happen to be very unlucky and have to spend another $300 on a replacement node board...

And that's before considering that you can't even get a delivery timeframe for that new machine 🤦‍♂️

I feel this is something that is misunderstood a lot in the pinball hobby.
If you overpaid for a pin, (which is common outside of this forum), had to fix lots of unknown issues. The pin is still worth what it's worth.
You shouldn't expect to get that money back.

Same with your time, this is a hobby so the time you spent fixing or replacing parts of a pin doesn't add value.
I've seen people take time and parts into consideration when pricing a pin when really it's still only worth what that pin is worth.
And don’t forget you’ve got to get fully back what it owes you. So add your Martin the delivery man fee on. Heaven forbid you had to stump up the cost of delivery for your own machine. Nah… some other **** can wear that!

Why do people think that by adding non-essential personalisation to a machine it increases the price and that the next buyer should foot the bill?

Is it because some people view it as a status symbol to have the latest machine - that they have to have it NOW, that they feel entitled to have it just because they want it.
By all means if you want to splash the cash to get it, great, but don't be surprised when others don't value your machine the same.
There are far better prices away from eBay, FB and here if you actually network and get to know people.

Although reading some of the comments on here it appears that because one person paid X amount for a specific pin - their version of that same pin is worth £500 more because It's been powder coated/ has new speakers/ doesn't have skill posts / is HUO / hasn't had children with their sticky fingers near / has been 'Feng Shui'd' and surrounded by crystals/ etc. etc.

How many of these people are bringing them to shows - most likely time you first played a machine in real life - or do they prefer to polish and admire the plastic toys they've added and newly fitted military grade LEDs twinkling away in their front room?

When I sell my car I 100% add on the price of the 2 side light bulbs I added! and my time fitting them!

To mod or not to mod, that is another debate. Fact is a modded machine sells for more, all other aspects being equal. Does that mean mods increase a pin's value by their cost? No and that's not what I said in my previous post either.

And I never said it increases by their cost either. At least we agree on that much.

I add the mods I want, if it makes me enjoy having the game more that's why I'm getting them. After adding flipper fans to my 2 machines I'll probably always get those for new machines now. If I don't get my money back on them then so be it, I've enjoyed the machine in the best way I could. Some mods can be transferred to your next machine too if you don't want to include them in a sale, shaker, glass, fans etc

In my head I honestly had my very nice Tommy at 3500 in today’s market.
I have no clue anymore 😂

I just paid 3650 for a v nice example with some maintainance to blinders needed, so i would have to agree.

However if you've got a panicked buyers market then name your price and you'll likely get a bite. It's all fair game, just depends how patient/desperate you are.

I've had two responses to my Tommy wanted ad, and they're both after considerably more than that with Craig's going for 5k.

Was one on fb a while back in Europe for 3700 euro, looked nice too add another 300 for shipping and that's around 3400 hundred gbp so I agree, 5k is loopy territory

Let's just be fair to the recent sales & offers you've had crewy, it's what people are prepared to let the game go for. What they're "worth" is a different matter and equally subjective in many cases, although you've got the advantage of group opinion.

I don't think there's any need to confuse or argue between the two.

It's a great game and there will be a range of prices that they go for. Its always been like this. Ebay you used to see TAFs go between 300 quid and 2000 inside a week.

Yup, I'm personally more horrified by the prices of NIB tbh  I'm not complaining about the offers I've received at all, I asked for next refusal on Craig's which started the ball rolling.

I think the range has been set for a Tommy now

£2500 is the most @Neil McRae would pay. But he wouldn’t as he doesn’t want one.

Or >£5000 if you are want to force a sale from someone who doesn’t really want to sell.

Roughly in the middle is @Sgt GrizZ with £3500, ever reasonable with his pricing but I am sure he has made us promise to bury him in Tommy. Dead bodies in pins must reduce their value a little. Maybe he is taking that into consideration with his price.

I have a Tommy. It isn’t as nice as @Sgt GrizZ so is worth less. But I don’t plan to be buried in mine so that might even it out. However, my kid likes playing it and it makes me smile. So I am not selling.

I hope that clears up Tommy prices for everyone. It is a valuable service we offer here.
;)

So interestringly fruit machines have done a similar thing (over the last 2-3 years classics prices have gone through the roof). And currently prices are on a big decrease. I'm not saying pins will do the same (there is still the supply/demand issue out there), however is interesting to see the peaks and troughs, and understand the reasons...

I saw a lineup at 2.8k (bids) on eBay yesterday ahhh lol

Run of the mill modern fruits are now cheaper and guess why.. because there are plenty available. Supply and demand

When did it become commonplace for people to treat a machine as an investment?

For as long as I've known people have bought pins, arcades, cars, motorbikes... and if they need to free up some cash they sell it on. Don't think that's particularly controversial

Surely all pins were bought as investment for ops? 😉

more seriously for us as machines shoot up in price the “investment” argument becomes stronger. If I lost 50% on my first pin I would have been £250 down.

If I now by a NIB there is absolutely no way I want to be 5k down 😱
