It’s usenet when we all had dial up modems lol.

Yep, looks terrible. Pinside has its faults but I find it easy just to ignore the negative posters.
Pinside "faults" could be fixed overnight by effective moderating IMO. This is something that Robin (the site owner) seems very reluctant to implement despite several people that I am aware of asking him to do so. His site, his rules I guess.

RGP = rec.games.pinball

It's the predecessor to Pinside

Surely Yahoo Groups were the predecessor, usenet is from the 1980s!

Of course, it did have the advantage of being distributed, so a single hosting system outage wouldn't take it down. Big downside was there was an awful lot of dodgy content on it, that sent legal into a frenzy at various points as we ran an NNTP server.

It's how I bought my Japanese SNES games way, way back :)

Controversy breeds interest.
A bit like @Paul on here instigating fisticuffs between the EM and Solid State crowd.

I think they get most of it right in pinside from a moderating POV. But one person's opinion post is another person's offensive post. I think when folks are on the attack the pinside folks step in, probably more than any other forum I'm part of.

A lot of suppliers are frustrated because they don't like that people can have an opinion on pinside but that's not really pinside's problem.

And that, My Young Jedi, Is the key. We get a number of reports from people because they dont like whats been put. Not like Vs Unacceptible are completely different.

Whilst I like the information and "Value add" that pinside gives, at it's core it's the same as here... A site is as good as it's Members.

My beef is they allow posters to make not just inflammatory posts but direct personal attacks on people and companies or things....pretty well whatever is the flavour of the month ripe for attack! It just isn't necessary IMO. Some of the posts are outright slander or defamatory but posters are allowed to keep on saying pretty much anything they like.

To clarify, I'm not only speaking about posts directed at me and my company - it happens to many others as well.

if they are slander or defamatory hit pinside with a C&D.

First, I'm not a lawyer of any type - these comments are only my understanding and not based on any legal knowledge. They also apply to many comments I have seen on Pinside that are not directed or involve me in any way.

Many comments that I see and which I believe to be slanderous and/or defamatory are pretty obvious and most people reading them, including yourself would recognise this IMO. As a single example look at the absolute rubbish that is being spouted on the Deeproot thread. Much of it is WAY out of order and, even to my legally untrained mind, certainly slanderous and defamatory.

You would be well aware of the costs of bringing any legal action as you suggest. It just isn't worth doing for most people as the costs far outweigh any possible remedy.

It brings me to the point that Pinside is poorly moderated (IMO) and I believe this poor moderation will bring about its demise eventually. Some, such as myself, have enough drama and crap going on in our lives. I go to a pinball site LOOKING for help or technical comments only to see bickering, bitching and straight out rubbish on Pinside. Just a waste of valuable time.

Anyway, others may have a different opinion to me and that's fine, each to their own but there lies my $0.02

Sorry but _everything_ on that deeproot thread is warranted, and I don’t see a single case of slander or defamation - the simple fact that Robert hasn’t done a C&D demonstrates that fact because if anyone was going to do a C&D it would be him - but he doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

Robert promised the world and has pretty much broken every single promise and has not been transparent until he was forced to do so. He deserves every single bit of **** and more.

whilst I’ve seen some ugly discussions I don't think I’ve seen anything that would stand up as C&D or near it - pinside is a big forum but typically it self moderates when things get personal and if you see something that’s personal of you report it they take action - I’ve done this myself - look at the ASOA saga that probably saved slot of people losing money.

there are some cooks on pinside / like every forum too add them to ignore and drain the stupid threads and pinside is epic.

Well said.
