I wouldn’t be happy with that kind of risk in the design, surely they have plenty of space out there to keep the genys at a safe distance.
Must be close to the servers then.
Yeah you’d think out in the states they would have the space to put everything in its own building, but then again it also depends on the Wally in charge.

I can confirm we have got some absolute idiots in charge over here, who’s orders are damp down (soak everything) for days after the fires been out, it’s ridiculous and considering how under staffed and under funded we are having 1 or 3 trucks parked all day and night at a fire that’s well and truly out never ceases to amaze me!

I’ll remind you that this is a hobby game forum not a banking site or something. :)

And test it!

Many years ago, I did some consultancy for a VERY large bank, after having spent years working for their workflow supplier. I knew their 'redundant' workflow/imaging system couldn't work (lack of that functionality had been a customer complaint for years) but they wouldn't believe me - nothing I did could convince them as the big external Dev that put the system and took millions for doing so told them it worked fine. In the end, I took the directors to the bunker which had the redundant systems and asked one to point to an optical disk - I then just ripped it out of the tower. Shocked/Angry faces, but when I turned it over to show them it was blank, and then removed several more at random I think I got my point across... (The IT Director lasted three weeks after that, and wasn't my biggest fan...)

Active active! :)

Thats why you feel crap for a couple of days afterwards - Takes that long for your chip to connect and activate Via Big Bill G's Server farm and get the latestest Firmware installed....

Can we expect an influx of Pinsiders on here whilst it is down ?
If so I would like to take this opportunity to announce my new pinball company. Jack Haas Pinball.
Our chief designer, Jon Poppadom, is working on our first game about a magical undead heavily titted robot.
I am accepting deposits of $50,000 dollars on the game which is limited to 100,000 units.
Please send your non-refundable bank transfer to Jack Haas, c/o Nigerian National Bank, Cayman Islands.

I cant see it... unless it rolls on for more than a few days.... To be honest, there are other Pinball forums about (all be it not as good as this one) :D
Perhaps some Yankee razzmatazz might tempt them. I volunteer to wear a cheerleader outfit and shake my pom poms vigorously If that will help ?

You getting your Pom poms out is liable to scare people away!

The data centre should have at least two switchable feeds coming in to supply power from different substations a Backup generator and UPS. You would think all devices would be mirrored to another site in this day and age..

It really isn't as simple as that, especially if the whole thing has been sprayed with a river's worth of water.

Another DC fully burnt down two weeks ago. One building of five is totally destroyed, no amount of secondary power is bringing anything in it back.

100% uptime and full redundancy is expensive and complicated and often prone to cause more frequent issues than actual failures. False positives/accidental failover causes outages. Rollbacks lose data. Backups aren't fully tested/checked regularly. No-one wants to own the poisoned DR chalice as if it works you did your job but if it doesn't you get a P45 - no win.

Oh, and no matter how hard to plan, test, (and spend $$$), sometimes "**** happens"

yeah but when the fireman says turn all that **** off. you might as well not have bothered*

Or when port authority says no you can't fill your diesel tanks**

Hardly a matter of life or death - I am sure they wouldnt start a thread if this site went down for a day or two.
are you joking? I've not been able to windup Robert at deeproot for a whole three days!

Seems strange it is down for so long, they must have backups to move to a different server surely.

@Neil McRae - behave - I honestly just spat out coffee

It could be the server needed to get the deeproot touch panel control lockdown bar working needs all the computing power of pinside.....

In all seriousness - I wonder why Robert comments on pinside - he has enough to worry about....

why ? its a hobby forum not a large corp etc.

The hosting company probaly has loads of clients which they are/have got sorted with moving onto new servers etc but a hobby forum will be way down their list of important clients.
