JJP3 The Future of Pinball

No idea I think they can't afford to do that and I guess as Jack used to be an operator he thinks about that a lot - the talk on the presentation was very operator focused in my view. They had thought about the event launch with camera guys hooked up to the projector and it seemed a very pro presentation - it was a bit cheesy with Lawlor thinking the world had stopped whilst he had been "away" was quite off putting and especially since I've not really been a fan of most of his games.

The mobile phone interaction would make more sense to me if it was utilized in multi-player,
Meaning, qualify certain shots in your own game then during a brief period in a mode or multiball another player is having you could affect whether the Flippers have full power or if the slings work or not, you know what I mean!

I am excited by this game. Feature list on flyer looks awesome, just wish the dollar was 1.6 again!

By the time the table arrives I suspect
It will be!

AFAIK there's no Bluetooth in the game - the phone link is by NFC, which means if you are an iPhone user you'll have to have a 6 or later to use the phone feature.

In one of the modes it takes a photo of you and puts it on the screen as a "person of interest" that the phone company is searching for. Underneath it had Location: Wheeling, Chicago" or something like that. I don't know if the machine has GPS or if that was preprogrammed in for the show but it's a nice touch.

**** me! Who the hell is going to pay £9.5k for a game?

Can't see many of these coming across the Atlantic. Might be the best game ever made but instant fail for me at this price.

A quick correction: the machine does use Bluetooth for connection, but also uses NFC to make the pairing easy on Android phones. Jack said last night that they will do something similar for iPhones but will probably farm out the technical side of that to an outside company.

Seems like people are saying it's a fun game, good layout, etc. but with so many themes to pick from... how did this even make it past the drawing board?

For me it's just gutting to think what might have been with the might of JJP and Pat. Creepy carnival, deep sea adventure, cowboys, time travel... Had the theme been a hit I maybe could have made the stretch but this didn't even make it passed the kids approval stage. Disappointed :(

I think the theme, or concept, whatever is very good. Looks great! I think the problem is the name itself. I stayed up till 2.30am to watch the reveal live. Before the sheets came off Pat kept say QUANTUM CITY this and QUANTUM CITY that. I assumed the game was going to be called QUANTUM CITY! I think the name is so important for things like this. DIALED IN just doesn't have any air of mystery about it to me. Everything else can stay the same but I think if it was called QUANTUM CITY the reaction would be much warmer.

Pat Lawlor was explaining his thinking last night. The basis of every horror or sci fi story is some item that is evil (horror) or has special powers (scifi) that the baddies have and the goodies have to deal with. Then he said that pinball machines reflect their times - there are lots of games from the 60s for example that have bowling as a theme, but noone makes bowling themed games any more because its not relevant today (presumably that was a dig at Dutch Pinball too...)

So anyway, today everyone has phones in their pockets which are powerful computers. Part of dialled in is the idea that there is a ridiculously powerful phone that has the power to make disasters happen in Quantum City, and somehow it has got lost and the evil phone company who made it want it back. But really the phone is just the thing that makes modes start, like the Start City scoop in RS or the electric chair in TAF or the slot machine in TZ. (Wonder how sucessful Addams would have been if it was called Electric Chair or TZ would have been if it was called Slot Machine...)

I think there is also the pun of Dialled In and setting up machine and getting it dialled in.

But I totally agree that this should have been called Quantum City. Then it would be a game about a cool futuristic city where weird stuff happens. With lots of humour.

BUT - you have to play this game. It is bloody brilliant. Im not interested in Hobbit and Wizards of Oz but a game that's got humour and is a bit silly is right up my street. Tempted to sell my MET to get one of these at some point...

Suppose a theme is personal and this will appeal to some. To me it's just naff and the kids don't find it cool. It's an oddity that's for sure.

Jack told me he wants to ship 7000 of these. I truly wish him well with that. You can't knock his enthusiasm that's for sure.

The left loop is called Bob's, and when the three Bob targets on the left of the playfield are lit then doing the left loop gets a Bob award. Same as Bob's Bunker in Roadshow.

At the moment the only award I noticed was the super selfie mode which puts photos of the player all over the screen - one pic taken each time a switch is made. (It uses face recognition to spot the player's face, but if you are wearing a T-shirt with a cartoon face on it (like a Homer Simpson shirt) it will also put pictures of that on too.)

The graphics for Bob awards are completely different to the rest of the game, which is a bit odd, but maybe that will be changed.

Here's an example of Super Selfie Mode with Koi playing the game:

The thing is, at least for me anyway, for £9,450 or £12,995 (yes; that's thirteen thousand pounds) you'd flipping well expect it to be nothing short of pinball utopia. Anything less and you have to question your own value of money.

However, I'm also very keen to give this a play sometime next year, for all the same reasons*, but the price really stinks and anyone buying it is just perpetuating the problem. So in some respects I actually hope I don't get the opportunity because that's somehow the moral highground.

(*assuming you can mute that f-u-c-k-i-n-g phone)

That is the biggest issue.
The price is so high that can't even begin to talk myself into believing it would be the best game ever, keep it for 10 years, etc etc.
Going to have to go to EAG just to get to play it as can't imagine many coming into UK.

Nothing to say we are doing eag with it. Personally eag is a fast way to burn £4000 for me and try and convince an op to spend £7900 (ex vat). Hmmmmm

Anyway. See it at Tilt Brum instead.
Oh, great, going to be at Tilt.
Let us know when - will be there like a shot:)

£ probably won't hit $1.6 again in any of our lifetimes if Brexit actually happens. Even if it doesn't, so much damage has been inflicted already, I doubt it'd happen for years.

Only probable way we see $1.6 is the YellowStone caldera blowing up and nuking half the West Coast, or the San Andreas fault dumping half of California into the Pacific Ocean.

I expect by the time these actually ship, they'll be well North of £10k for the LE, in the UK ... perhaps £11k.

I would rather have a awesome launch party at tilt. Give some cash to charity. Than give it to a stupid show where no operator is gonna buy anyway. So let's hope for a Tilt launch soon!

Be well up for that. Nice one Phil.

utter codswallop.

Nothing has changed because of brexit. Those that want to make money will realise that and it will all go back to how it was.

Neil.

Didn't stern say they were going to have a new machine at EAG? Guessing Aerosmith?
You what? Where did you get that little rumour from. Or is it a total guess?

How the f*** do Aerosh*t manage to be good enough to get their own pin? Although I don't like their music I can understand that The Rolling Stones have been around long enough with enough hits to warrant it.

When is someone going to go back the good old days and make super cool pins with super cool science fiction and space ship themese...??? ;)
