Financing pinball

I saw it mate and thanks appreciate it 🙏

The Naughty boy had to withdraw and edit his nasty unfounded comments but it's remembered.

And one of the main reasons those who you mentioned don't get involved so much now is pretty much due to that one individual.
like you've not changed your post before will :D :D :D

It’s a shame members feel the need to snipe at each other. People come and go in this hobby and others dip in and out as circumstances change. That’s just life.

People like @Will @Sgt GrizZ @Matt Adams contributed massively to this hobby and kept interest going during the dark early years of the millennium. Just because newer members weren’t around to see it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. I regret that for whatever reason they don’t feel able to contribute as much any more.
Tbf I’m here mostly still posting about Popeye✊😁

quite possibly the worst insult I've ever had in my thirty years of winding people up on Internet forums - that's you off my Christmas card list Dave :D :D :D
WHAHAHHAHAHH! I’m nice, really 😇😈🤣

Back to Popeye, yes… “Popeye the sailor man, he lives in a frying pan…”

I'm thinking about doing the same thing with my KI2. Not enough buttons on MK2 to play MK3 and don't want to butcher it. Any chance you could show the internal setup?
Sure. In that rats nest of wires tthe purple cat5 wire was for a mame setup i had, yellow and black wires are for the blue led buttons, the original harness is over to the left)

Ahh sorry mate, I meant the board setup. I was going to put MK3 into KI2 so I don't have to add the run button on MK2. Just curious how you setup multiple boards and switch between them

I was genuinely curious about how people fund very large cocollections
Some folk earn a fortune and a 10 grand pinball machine is akin to a decent weekend away or a single hand of blackjack.

Newly qualified lawyers (ie 24 years old) at the London office of Ropes & Gray earn £147,000 a year for example. Profit per partner is £2.5 million.

A large pinball collection is a damned sight cheaper than a desirable classic car, or a ski chalet in Verbier, or a trophy wife.

Of my games, the most I paid was 2.7k for my TZ and like many others on here I have been lucky enough to buy them before prices went nuts.

I bought my Addams in 1998. I had absolutely no expectation of making any money, or seeing it as an investment. Quite the reverse, I feared the costs of getting it repaired and finding spare parts in the days before eBay and Internet fora.

I have made various investments in my life. None have delivered anything approaching the % gain my Addams has. And it has cost me less than twenty quid in terms of repairs.

I doubt many 24 year olds on 147k have much time to play their games though. Those law firms are notorious for getting their “billable hours”.

Most people I know who do earn mega salaries have absolutely zero interest in pinball. I’m sure there is an occasional footballer who might casually drop 10 grand without thinking on a game but is that enough to keep a manufacturer going?

The average salary in the uk is still around 30k. Prices have already been pushed way above this level 😢

Factor in the cost of paying for housing/kids etc and it rapidly becomes hard to justify tying up 20-30k in games.

On the up side pins are extremely liquid as an asset. I know that if the need arises I can easily get shot of some or all of them. I’d rather try moving on a 90s game than a modern one though as the pool of potential buyers is bigger.

Yes. Anecdote time: When I was in my late 20s/early 30s, I went to dinner with a group of lawyers (mostly), of whom two were working in Mergers and Acquisitions. We started about 7/8pm, an hour late due to half the people present being unable to get out of work. One of the M&A people was still texting at 1am, trying to get out of work, and wondering if anyone was still there.

This is the point I was trying to make. Although there are, indeed, people who can drop £10k on a weekend away or playing Blackjack, there aren’t enough of them to make a default assumption that’s how most people on a pinball forum are paying for large collections.

It also doesn’t feel, on here, like this is a ‘whale’-dominated hobby*. It feels pretty democratic, which is nice.

[*There are arguments in defence of hobby ‘whales’ (e.g. https://www.createursdemondes.fr/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/DontCallThemWhales.pdf), but - personally - I’ve seen a critical mass of whales ruin board gaming, or at least, online board gaming hobby spaces, so I’m not sure whether this slide deck is cope].

I’d actually go as far as to say it’s a pretty inclusive hobby.
There are some very generous people both on the forum and in the leagues.
Realistically I’m unlikely to own many of the newer games but I’ve had invites to play GnR etc from several people.
I’m sure there are some people who hoard their games away but there are equally a lot of people happy to throw their doors open and invite random strangers into their house to pay with their expensive toys. 😃
You don’t need to own games to be part of the hobby

I don’t own a machine, and unlikely to do so ( unless I get a cash windfall at some point )
But with the public places available, I’m able to play machines I could only dream of owning.
Im really thankful for pinball republic/ electric circus/ pinball office etc
They are a god send to me ( and many others )
Long live the pinball arcades 😊

[Post updated as requested (and rightly so by the moderation team))

"What I find incredible its folks who have been in pinball for years claim to be one of the good guys and all knowledgeable in pinball; moan about prices all the time then try and stitch people up with half baked piles of junk dressed up as "mint" for thousands of pounds more than they are worth!

Regards,
Neil.

So bearing in mind the new forum rules I will try and go gently , and also try and not make too many spelling mistakes , it's tricky for me as I am slightly dyslexic probably why I am a photographer creative mind and all that... 😃
So @Neil McRae I know you edited this post but it's still sat there and I for one am quite curious about what you are on about?
Would you care to elaborate further as it's quite a sweeping statement and if any truth behind it I think you need to explain as I have always found this place a good place to buy from , and I would love to know what long standing good guys on here are " stitching people up for thousands of pounds more than they are worth "

Or maybe you got it wrong??? I believe it's not unheard of that you might be wrong 😂😛

Peace and love , hugs and all that jazz ❤️

So I can't find a way to respond without getting put in the penalty box but I gave up worring about what certain type of folks in the world think if I'm wrong a long time ago. But on this I'm pretty comfortable not being wrong too!

Regards,
Neil.

Really? That's a bit odd.

If you have any kind of fact or indeed any truth to your previous comments I am pretty sure you wouldn't be in any trouble from admin , as what you would be stating would be fact .

Anyway no worries if your happy in your own self that you correct then that's all good , but it is a bit nasty to throw unfounded accusations around In a public forum and not standing by them, that's just a little heads up as to how to be nice .

Oh hang on 😛😄😃😄
Sorry I almost forgot to add the smiley .

Still sending love

**** me, if this is the sort of discourse we can look forward to with the new warning system in place then I think we might actually be worse off. Gloves off is much more fun to watch.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hey Guy you know me , I like the old school ways , but we live in new times as of yesterday. 😛

Ah the good old wild west days of the ukpinball yahoo group. Miss the free for all, don't miss the endless digest emails. How times have changed.
