DMD extender working on No Fear with 4.3" composite monitor

David,

Just a quick thought - Why not (Bearing in mind that a simple Pi config with no USB connections draws less than 1A - nominally around 800mA in this type of configuration) produce a small cable/board that allows you to take the 5V power for the Pi from the Machine itself/extender - therefore meaning that when you add the Pi you then have a self contained unit requiring no additional Power requirements...

Looking at this at the moment, unless I'm reading it wrong, we have a power cable feeding the Extender itself, an optional cable for the Screen power (Which to be fair could possibly be tapped off the Coin door 12v feed - a short cable run - however everyone will need to run mains -> 5V for the Pi... so therefore Mains will be needed in there to provide the +5v for the Pi only - a PITA if you see what i mean :)

Just trying to add some constructive observations :)

Paul

STOP! :scared: You don't need a power supply for the Raspberry Pi - it takes its power from the pinball. Follow the instructions on the web site, cheers!

It doesn't mention power for the Pi at all as far as I can see (I didn't realise that the accessory connector on the Pi could take it's power from whatever it's connected to!). Just me being presumptuous I guess!! :)

Phew - one less thing to worry about :) Thought it was too simple an omission ;)

Mine turned up as well today, many thanks David. Got it all plumed in nicely except for one thing.....my bloody composite video cable isn't long enough to go from the backbox to under the apron 😢 Need to go routing through some boxes upstairs to see if I can find a longer one!!!!!

All sorted and working :D Now for a bit of configuration. How do I figure out the hex colour codes for the 3 brightness settings to make the display red?

Rus - can you resend me that BSD background image if you still have it please mate....can't seem to find the one you sent me before.

For try...

2001=FF0000
2002=D70000
2003=C10000

I'm hopeful that by the end of next week I'll have completed a friendly Windows application to help you with the configuration...

Thanks David, I'll try that now. Not sure whether my screen is 16:9 or 16:10. Just tried 16:9 and there was still a black edge at each end so just gonna try 16:10. On 16:9 the DMD wasn't centered vertically (seemed a bit low), any ideas on the right values for 1001 to get it dead centre?

Nice one David, thats got it looking red ;) Just need to get it centered and put a background image in then I'll take some pics and post.

David and I had issues with my RasPi as it didn't read the SD card sent, nor a replacement. It was fixed by some files and was up and running yesterday.

I am using the following for Blue on TAF, plus I have a The Addams Family Picture which needs some work but is a good start.

2001=3232CC
2002=0276FD
2003=60AFFE

I have the picture at the top and them lowered the DMD output to the bottom as it worked better like that. If anyone wants the picture to work on, let me know.

Come on guy's. Less of the talk, Lets see some pictures.

Looking forward to getting a few of these for my machines.

Still got to do some messing about with the background image but here's some pics. This thing is awesome, if your thinking about getting one them I highly recommend giving David a shout.

Brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are these being sold as a kit as yet for us thicko's who don't understand anything technical ?

David will be selling kits but at the moment he sells the extender cables and software. You have to buy the LCD, Raspberry PI and a composite cable long enough to reach.
It is easy to fit and wire it up with little to go wrong.

"Little to go wrong" Now where have I heard that before.

Let me rephrase it then. There are good instructions and the design is logical so it will most likely work. ;)

We had a minor issue with the software on mine which we were able to resolve.

If we were rating this like car manuals rate work, and the rating system is a pinball with one pinball being something like changing a easy to reach bulb and five pinballs was the hardest things to do. The DMD Extender would have a rating of 2 pinballs. You don't have to understand the Raspberry Pi to get this to work, just plug things together.

Tweaking it to make it look even better is harder for some people as they don't play with computers though David has an idea for that too.

Looking good. Chris, i seem to have lost your email addy, so if you PM me it i can send you the image for Dracula if you still need it.

I also had an inssue with my first raspberry pi. The composite plug wasnt giving me an output so it had to be sent back for a replacement. New ones all good tho..

Rus121,

I noticed that you had a MM apron set up in one of your pics. Any chance i may be able to steal the config/image files for it please to save re-inventing the wheel??

Screen arrived this morning. Time for a play tonight :)

Paul

so if you PM me it i can send you the image for Dracula if you still need it.

Cheers Rus, I dusted off photoshop and knocked up a background image so its no longer needed :thumb:
