Bargain WPC Speaker Upgrade £10 a pair for dual driver Sony xs-gt1328f

"48 sold in the last 24 hours" - i wonder how many of those were from pinheads on here?

looks all very nice but i just don't have the tools, skills or time to do the job. if one of you clever chaps could maybe do a brief video with before and after sound and a sort of step by step guide to the process, that'd be a great resource for this site to host (via youtube) and i'd love to watch it. @Paul maybe that's something we can start doing here, collecting pinball skill videos (like @Matt Adams doing the cabinet decals, for example) as i'm sure there is plenty of subject matter. everything from carpentry to electronics.

make it and i'll happily host it on here :D

no. i would bust my machine and hurt myself trying to do it. we need someone who *isn't* a total retard to do it.

Dan, if you can do a pop bumper you can do this, unscrew the old ones and fit the new ones, you will just need to solder the speaker wires on xx (3 kisses is inappropriate apparently! x)

Well even I bought a few sets.
At this rate there's going to be most of the U.K. machines with upgraded speakers fitted.

I feel really left out not owning a pinball machine modern enough to have the right backbox to fit them in :( I'm almost tempted to order some just so I can say "I was there" :p

Nothing stopping you buying a set and keeping hold till you have a suitable machine to fit them to.
Daft not to with them being g such a good price.

Also ordered a set. No clue if they'll work in my R&B but I guess i'll find out - for £10 it's well worth a go. :-)

yup

bought a pair

fook knows what for but a few here I can try them on

Well for a tenner I'm buying a stack of these and will use them up at some point in the future. Thanks for the great find DRD!

Regarding this:
I have had pinball pro in my addams family for many years. It is good, but it is so expensive, around £150 by the time you get them from the USA. And I think this cost is disproportionate to the benefit you receive.

I agree completely. Actually, it is overpriced CRAP! The speakers are nothing special, they are just marginally better than stock. For that kind of money you can buy high end Rockford Fosgate speakers and sub, the L-Pad and a good quality passive low pass filter. But high end audio kit is never going to be appreciated on a pinball machine.

Although having said that, when replacing subs I would ALWAYS choose Rockford Fosgate and probably fit a low pass filter too.

Whilst we are on the subject of everything speakers, Anyone on here know where i can get a 10" spacer made of wood suitable for replacing the internal cab speaker?

Much like this...

I could make one myself, however it would take me weeks, and probably a fortune in tools lol

And anyone know where I can get a bracket or mount for the right backbox speaker in WPC95 games? If someone made these I am sure there would be a big market for it.

I bet they're wondering why there's a big run on these speakers in the Argos warehouse right now :D.

Why would you want one of those dude? Just fit the right sized speaker.

by the same token, why not buy a pair of these that perfectly fit the left DMD panel, and a pair that are the right size for the right DMD panel, for two games. is that an option?

You could do that, but part of the appeal of replacing the speakers is making the sound more ballanced by using 2 identical speakers in the DMD panel

Whilst on speakers, can anyone recommend a small amp to power the speakers and sub, looking for a bit more in my Metallica Pro?

99.9% convinced. Finger hovering over buy button...

interesting for someone looking for some more bass.... Unceremoniously stolen from Aeneas' flippers.de website....

There is however one small trick that you can do on pinball machines that will improve the sound quality. Just one small resistor can be enough, change the value of R17 on the audio-video board on WPC-95, or on R39 on the older soundboard A-16917 (WPC).
This resistor influences the balance between the backbox speakers and cabinet speaker. What we want to achieve is reduce the backbox speakers. When you increase the level of the sound, the bass from the cabinet will come out more.

The potentiometer installed over R17 on a WPC-95 a/v board.

I use a potentiometer instead of a resistor, that way you can adjust the sound like you want. As you can see I use alligator clips to clip it over R17. By default it is a 22k ohm resistor. When you go lower (so buy a potmeter that goes up to 20k ohm) you'll give the sound more bass. It's safest to use a dmm when adjusting it - do not turn it all the way to 0 ohm because that can give some problems ! On my Attack from Mars I've installed it on 9k ohm, this gave the best results. It's a small upgrade, but in combination with new speakers this will make a big improvement in how to pinball machine sounds and even feels (as you feel the vibrations in the cabinet).

Now if someone wants to sell me one of those croc clips thingys i''ll be sorted..

Whilst on the subject of better replacement speakers for pinball machines that don't cost a fortune, does anyone have any recommendations for sub-woofers in the 6" to 8" range?

A quick skim through Amazon turned up this 400W RMS 8-inch sub for £27 and there are plenty of others in the same price bracket:

Got to be better than the cheap stock speaker? I'm thinking of popping something like this in my old Bally's with a 2.1 amplifier and a pair of tiny 2" full range speakers that will sit behind the ventilation grill in the "neck" between cabinet and backbox.
