@Kman I get the risk you are trying to managed, but something as simple as any environment where a cleaner or cleaning company enter, is likely to fall foul of a power socket being meddled with, causing something that needed power being turned off. We added UPS into one of these setups but if the cleaner came in on a Friday evening, it didn't last until monday. In most of these causes, there is an isolation switch on the upstream device, should you need to isolate the system being given power.

Thanks Calimori. Yes, I accept your points entirely and understand that these are managed applications to ensure bespoke use/segregation of sockets in an otherwise unrestricted environment. I was originally thinking they could be used more generally and therefore of the possibly unintended consequences that potentially speaks to product liability.

We used to get it all the time in Telecoms.

Why has the customer had a power fail at 6pm on a friday night (and sometimes comes back at 7, sometimes not at all).
You would be gobsmacked how many cleaners come onto site, unplug the equipment to plug in the vacuum, and then plug it back in afterwards, not realising they have just taken the comms for the entire building down.

This was 20 years ago, and things are better now, however stuff like this does still happen....

Back to pinball.....I decided to have a go at printing the fruit machine reels (originally polycarb I think) used in Who Dunnit. These spin on a stepper motor shaft, are controlled via an opto window and seem to be notorious for failing when the shaft housing on the reel splits....as I understand it often from over tightening of the single set screw. I wasn't aware of this until recently when one of the reels on my WD went 'off centre' and stopped spinning. Turns out all three had been repaired in the past. Replacement reels are available but seem to be the original design, so I decided to make one with a stronger shaft housing and incorporate two (opposing) grub screws to get much better grip on a rounded shaft. Have therefore not bothered to flat the shaft but this would also be a helpful mod. New reel works perfectly and I've temporarily transferred the decal off the original reel pending a new decal set arriving. Pics shows the original reel and my version.

Recently had to repair the coffin popper switch on my BSD and so took a closer than usual look at the coffin which has a flimsy/poor fitting back cover on mine .....which I assume is stock. I've therefore 3d printed something that I think looks more like a coffin tombstone until I can swap out the whole coffin for a decent modded one.

I like that, good work.
I replaced the mess I had with @RudeDogg1’s mods but I think he did a very limited batch

It wasn’t limited was still going until the moulds burnt out literally discontinued it today
Darn it ....didn't realise it was still available until its very recent cremation! I could design and print a suitable coffin base for paintwork but don't have the skill to craft the skeleton work.

Just needs remoulding which I’m not prepared to do on my dime for a couple orders unfortunately. So until there is enough interest it’s over I’m afraid

Completely understand and it's not enough of a priority for me just now to commission a one off piece of work.

Nothing too special, or complicated. However I needed to create a 45' joint for some bevelled trim to make a bespoke commissioned frame.
I was able to knock this up in less than 10 minutes on Tinkercad, specifically to hold the edging. Likewise the name plates and holders.

I was also able to print a stencil to use for the pyrography on the top log.

It just shows the usefulness of being able to print something specific for your needs in next to no time. :-)

Well done Wayne. Can't agree with you more about the usefulness of 3d printing to make handy aides. I recently had to make a replacement pinball speaker panel and 3d printed router templates to accurately cut the screen and speaker openings.

I needed some split pins for a blind, took very little time, to design.
But I am still largely finding someone else has made the thing I need, and I print that, there is such a large community.

I am looking further into how to turn any waste material into new filament, this isn't going to be cost efficient but can teach me a thing about how it is made.

I've been considering getting a 3d printer recently. I used to dabble with 3d back in mid to late 2000's. Nothing professional and I've never made anything for printing before so would be a slight learning curve. But thinking of making something at somepoint, just not sure what yet 😂

I made most of the stuff in the Future Pinball tables bearing my name, SS, IJ, AF, FG etc. Obviously everything made for them was very low poly and NOT made to be printed.

Even had to make the ramps as FP ramps couldn't be used in most titles because the ramps were to complex.

I also made the planes and idol in IJ, Created the gameroom for it and recreated the Disney version of IJ in FP

Edit. I mght have a go at making something pinball related in 3d again soon. I would be glad to help out with anything once i'm comfortable with the newer versions of ZBrush, Blender and Maya and how to prepare or convert it for printing

Not sure whereabouts in Cheshire you are, but if you are in the right area & can spare 7 weekdays (9:30 - 3:30) for online courses, plus be willing to spend 3 days in Leigh, you build & get to keep a printer - https://www.3d360printer.co.uk/

If you go for it, mention my name & I get something - probably a spool of filament.

Ive thought about this several times. But whenever ive looked into it doesnt seem practical - at least not from a sort of DIY POV.
Melting dead filament down into moulds seems popular. Using as packing is another suggestion I've seen - which isn't a bad Idea I guess.
(I have much dead filament)

Pretty eclectic mix of stuff. Once I've got to grips with scanning I may have a go at making up a ramp just to see how feasible it is. Most are of a size that will mean jointing them. PETG would work ok but won't ime produce the clarity of moulded ABS. This probably isn't a big deal in practice if needing to replace a busted, obsolete ramp. Not tried printing with ABS (got to set up to filter the toxic fumes) so don't know how clear that comes out.

Yes, at the beginning I downloaded various free files as wanted to get used to slicer and printer set up. But nowadays I prefer the challenge of creating the STL files although there's a whole lot that's way outside my competency at the moment I'm guessing that extruding the melt into decent quantities of usable filament is an expensive undertaking. But I guess y0u could come up with some exotic colours!

I remember some discussion about scanners a while ago - found this comparison https://github.com/OpenScanEu/OpenScanBenchy - looks like some of the differences could be down to the user
Interesting idea.

Interesting and I agree that there's a question over user capability and/or consistency here as I've seen better outcomes on YouTube for some of the scanners mentioned.

I did actually try ABS a while back in Me Ol' Bambu. Just put in the filament and said print. Jobs a good un :)

Austin Powers is an acquired taste and I confess to being a fan so (obviously) got the pin which is a bit bonkers but great shout outs. Anyway, the Dr Evil lift mechanism on mine was in poor condition as seems to have been broken and glued back together in two places in the past. Doesn't help that it was a cheaply made piece in the first place. So have re-designed and 3d printed. Works a treat.

While working on Dr Evil I decided to do something about the scrawny looking spotlight illuminating Austin Powers. Ended up incorporating it into an 'A' for Austin arch over the ramp entry.
