UKCS Preview

Eyes turn towards the world famous Pinball Republic in Croydon this weekend for the finals of the IFPA 2024 UK Championship Series.

This invitational tournament is open to 64 players who accrued the largest number of WPPR points in UK events in 2024. The top prize is £500 and, for the highest placed UK player, a spot at this year’s IFPA Worlds in Austria.

The format will follow that of the IFPA Worlds, with eight rounds of tiered Swiss group matchplay featuring a randomly selected old, mid, and new machine in each round. The top 32 will qualify for best of seven head-to-head finals, with a bye for the top 16 and two byes for the top eight qualifiers. This format gives a huge 300% TGP and an expectation of around 130 WPPRs for the winner, meaning this tournament has the potential to significantly shake up the UK rankings.

World top 20 players Timber Engelbeen and Paul Englert had initially signed up for the tournament, but unfortunately later withdrew. This leaves welcome international representation from Ben Moser (Switzerland) and Corentin Bucillat (France) alongside a whopping 42 of the UK’s top 50 players.

In this Cheltenham Festival week I take a quick look at some of the runners and riders vying for that ticket to Austria:

Craig Pullen (UK #3, seed 6)

Veteran Craig brought his recent winning drought to an end at the last PBR event, February Fantastico, beating Josh Iles in the double elimination final. In great form, it would take a brave man to bet against the baseball cap of doom.

Josh Iles (UK #2, seed 3)

Josh’s rapid development has brought him some excellent results over the last year or so, including narrowly missing out on the playoffs at INDISC and an impressive 14th place at EPC. Nobody would be surprised to see Josh go deep in this tournament.

Yuen Aw (UK #4, seed 1)

Top seed Mystic Yuen has farmed the WPPR fields of PBR to great effect, taking a firm grasp on his UK #4 ranking. Yuen will be looking to lay down some Aw-some scores whilst simultaneously taking care of son James, who will also feature in the tournament as the 59th seed.

Matt Vince (UK #7, seed 2)

Pinfest 2024 champion “The Machine” is always a dangerous opponent when playing at PBR, with several of his own machines in the lineup. Matt has an excellent shot at winning it all.

Nathan Garwood (UK #8, seed 4)

Another rapidly rising talent, Pinfest runner-up “The Meal Deal” is yet to win a PBR tournament but came 3rd in both the Turkey Fry-Up and the Classics Matchplay. With his thrilling on-the-fly style, if Nathan’s eye is in this weekend he will be a formidable foe.

For those who aren’t able to be in attendance this weekend, UKCS will be streamed live on Twitch: twitch.tv/NeilMcRae

You can also follow along with the results on Matchplay: http://matchplay.live/ukcs2024

If you’re sad to be missing out on this year’s UKCS, your next tournament opportunity at PBR will be the mega British Masters taking place 17-19 April. Tickets remain available here: https://www.tickettailor.com/checko...QQ7WLrxcClxBuaRgxg_aem_HMAzQE6UwmlJ8Gy7zSepsQ

See you at the weekend,

Simon

Very disappointed to not be at this. However it turns out the dissapointment would have been greater if I had qualified as something has come up meaning I would not have been able to come. Have bought my ticket for the British Masters though, definitely the Friday and Saturday and if the cards fall right then the Thursday too. Good luck to everyone involved, really looking forward to watching the stream. No prizes for guessing who I'll be cheerleading for 🤔
