UK Pinball Party 2013

Ok, first things first!! 8 ball multiball out of an Ark is cool!! at least the first 5 times or so, then you are left with one ramp, poor modes and big holes you can't avoid!! (Will, don't worry, remember the state of the playboy, we both wanted rid!)

Show's.....My thoughts are that as fantastic as 100 people equals 100 machines would be, it won't happen, Nick is right. Personally, i would try and get regional organisers to round up machines that are willing to be donated and arrange collections in regions. (Maybe this does in effect already happen between groups of friends in different ares. I'm sure Mike and stan will be sharing a van with me)

The strangest thing for me about this thread, is that ALL my close friends and family say that I am the laziest person they know!!! How does pinball manage to get me off my **** to do all this!! I suppose it comes down to how you feel about pinball, pure love? Art? competition? big kids mechano? money? People are in pinball for many reasons, whose to say any are wrong? I stand by what i said on the other thread, it is a big gesture giving a machine to a show. How it gets there is the logistics and one of the big issues, there are many hero's and they deserve to be rewarded, whether financially or otherwise. I'm not 'old skool' but have huge respect for those guys, without them i would never have found this hobby!! Is 'thanks' enough? If i took one pin in my car, all day long. If i hire a van? well i'm selling a pin at the end of each month to pay the mortgage (then buying more once it is!) so, not often. not enough love? who knows! Man this is good gear!

Speechless at some people's view's on this.
Think I will leave it there. 😢

Same here. In fact I was quite surprised to see Andy posting a 'final' plea for pledges or forget it... Anyway, I've gone in with an existing pledger to donate three. Hopefully he'll get enough 'others' making an effort to see it happen.

EDIT - Just seen the total appears to be 95 now on the UKPG page so quite a jump from earlier today. :)

playboy has naked women, Indy has a whip :whip: .... You won that deal 👅

Now I feel all mean, but I can't control my situation. My missus is not the understanding type so I just cannot commit to driving a van up, sorry. I may get one day or I may not get to come at all, but my wife and son come first so tough. It's not really fair to guilt trip me into risking that.

If someone local to me wants to collect, he can have whatever. If I get to come by car, I'll bring a machine. I don't ask for free entry or for cash back for a single machine.

Damn I want some of that good stuff Matt was smoking

Don't worry Dan. Seriously this same discussion comes up pretty much every time a big pin event is revving up :boxing: :biggrin1:

There are still probably plenty like me too. Last year I thought, 'I'll hire a Berlingo and bring one', which soon changed to 'Might as well get a Transit', and before I knew it I had a Luton hired, and was ferrying back and forth to collect other peoples machines.

At the moment I'm still at stage one of that process, but already thinking of transit + 3 machines. I'll hold off committing until nearer the time if possible.

It's a fact that in the good old days of Villa and Wicksteed, people were contributing to the shows to be a part of something great, something that'd hardly been seen before. It was magic. No one cared about the money. Some people like Stan and Lee IIRC provided a truck and moved masses of machines. Some people threw some chunky cash in the hat upfront to make them happen, and never expected it back.

The Slam is the event that feels to me like the early shows. If I were going to spend my resources (money & time) supporting something, that's my number 1 priority, because I know that all the profit goes to pay the hard cost of van hire. I don't know if Will pays a set amount for vans for that, but if I had a bunch of machines in the UK, I'd take them for nothing and, if there was a van kickback after, great.

This is not to take anything away from the Pinball Parties, Andy does a commendable job, but their commercial nature means that the van payments do have to be factored in and when a single machine can only be maybe 15 quid, people get the hump. The reality is that 15 quid is an irrelevent amount, it's not worth giving it out, maybe better to spend the money on a truck and driver. The commercial bit means that some of the magic is lost, but it's still a great event!

At the end of the day, it's all about priorities.

(Am I the only one who's wondering where Andy will get the time to organise a Pinball Party and run a startup pinball manufacturing company... ;-) )

Happy days indeed, best memory for me, was the security guard feeling sorry for me at Villa. So, he let me into the building at 6 in the morning, ( I was sleeping in the truck). I had the whole show to myself for 4 hrs... :biggrin1:

I have nothing but respect for the organisers of these shows for the amount of effort that goes into running them and all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes long before, during and after the actual show itself.

Now I am probably one of the worlds worst organisers (as Biff, Robbie, Ronsplooter and Master Potter can testify after last weekends epic house move). :rolleyez: Now that I have settled in my new place, I have now pledged some games to the show because I want the show to suceed and this is the best way that I help. It is great just watching everyone playing your games, and to enjoy playing everybody's else's games that they have kindly brought along.

We all end up totally knackered after every show after setting up and then later breaking down all the games then getting them all safely back home again, but it's worth every minute!

I'm sure it will be a good event as always, but please, please, PLEASE get some airconditioning working in that room. The games play extremely weak when hot and makes most of them utterly useless.

I think I heard someone say it was 'on' last year, but obviously not good enough. Having all the doors open (because it was hot outside too) arguably didn't help

Best plan, wear shorts. Bring water. Expect weak flippers.

There will be aircon units at daventry.

I know this for a fact as I spoke to Andy this afternoon and he chased me up on supplying some portable units we sometimes get in at work .

Seeing as special requests seem to be working....hopefully there'll be more of the trophy pins out of the competition-only area and out in to the wilds of the public area too :)

Yes, that's a personal gripe of mine too!

When people travel long distances to the show and only can stay one day, there's nothing worse than the game they really, really wanted to play being roped off in the competition area and not available for the general public to try. Competition games should be good quality, well playing games which are not the popular sought after high end pins which some pinball enthusiasts don't often get the chance to play.

Good luck with that... I've taken high end games to the show before now and almost always the owners specify for tournament use only as they know that the machine will be better looked after by the tournament players and won't have quite so many plays on them as they would in the public section.

One owner has said never again after watching someone wrestle/throw his machine out of the delivery van in a hurry!

Bring cans of Lynx..

Have been to several pinball shows (Villa Park, Wicksteed & Daventry). It used to feel like a Pinball Show with a pinball competition tagged on to the side. The last one I went to at Daventry felt more like a Pinball Competition with a pinball show tagged on to the side !

Yeah, agreed. Did anyone go to Replay last year - was that similar, or is that just a Show (no competitions)? Tbh, it's closer to me than Daventry (assuming it remains in Manchester) so I may give it a try this year instead.

I thought the same about Daventry but maybe you need a competition with the show or vice versa to make it viable/attract everybody?

Replay was great last year, just a show, and has already been confirmed for same venue again. October 12th and 13th.

Got to agree with this, one of the biggest things for me at Daventry is playing in all the different tournaments......love me some competitive pinball :)

Have the competitions been confirmed for Daventry? I know Sir Ayub stepped down from that role, but not sure if anyone has said they would take over.

And yep, the Northern Lights show at Play Expo is a fantastic show. Highlight of the year for me. Pinball, retro (and modern) video games, and the occasional Lara Croft wandering around :)
