U.K. PINBALL HALL OF FAME - NEW INDUCTEE

he could have looked at everything on the site, and the only evidence would be that he paid to access it, which he admitted. there would only be images on his computer if he chose to download them, which he didn't, so the argument that nothing was found is moot.

by the way, plesae note that this is Gary Flower's personal 'pinball hall of fame' that is chosen by him alone, and not the UK one which has a committee and voters and uses public nominations, since 2008.

i am not having a pop at Gary, or even particularly at Pete Townshend whose music i still like. still amazed frankly that he still had a career after this came out, some deals were done that day. not a great choice, and just writing a song doesn't make someone a good figurehead for any topic.

Images are cached and stored on the computer when you browse. Townshend did not have any illegal images on his PC so he hadn't downloaded anything nasty. That is why he was not prosecuted but cautioned and is no longer on the sex offenders register. Perhaps people need to step back from the lynching and consider how Townshend's music and subsequent films, Tommy and Quadrophenia, featured Pinball.

Don't forget Iggy, Bowie, Jimmy Page, Bill Wyman and many, many others in the music business were actively involved with underage girls. I am not condoning any of this but it seems a big overreaction and appears to be more of an attack on Gary which is pretty petty.

The absence of files on his computer doesn't really rule out anything IMO, given the time between him paying for the site and the police conducting the search... and the claim of "research" always struck me as somewhat convenient.

However for someone in his position with so many young fans, I don't think there has been any claims he behaved inappropriately, unlike some other rock stars who still proudly get featured on Pinballs.

Its interesting Crewey said he had contacted the authorities beforehand, has that been corroborated by anyone other than Townsend? it would certainly be odd to inform the authorities before committing an offence. If thats true it would kinda push the balance of probability to him being innocent, in my mind anyway.

He was not convicted or taken to court. Either that means the police/CPS did not believe that they could get a conviction given the evidence or he bribed everyone and it was all covered up. It was a long time ago and here has been no further allegations so you either have to believe he was investigating or he is being shielded by people in power.

I can't believe that there is a big conspiracy of people protecting him. I think he was curious but stepped back. He did put Pinball on the music map.

I don't believe he bribed his way out of trouble, I doubt he would have had that sort of power.

Through his music he definitely made pinball enter the public consciousness.

Because of the time between when it happened the search, he probably had a new computer and therefore any evidence wouldn't be there.

Can't believe anyone sticking up for him!

No right minded person goes onto a child porn website either f**king way!!!!!!!!!

If you watched the documentary on this you will see them take over 6 PC's from his house. Not sure why he needed all those like..

He wasn't convicted but was cautioned. If you believe in the judicial system he has been punished and hasn't re-offended so should be treated the same as anyone else. If you don't believe in the judicial system then what would you do with someone convicted of an offence? Forever tar them with their error for the rest of their lives? Townshend wasn't even convicted. He was stupid and has paid for his error. Perhaps you should research the events rather than label him in the same category as Harris/Savile/Glitter/Edwards.

It is a shame you cannot forgive someone for acts that they regretted doing.

David

Depends what you're forgiving
In Townshend's case it would be using a credit card to register on a site that sold inappropriate images but no evidence found of any downloads or purchases made on the credit card.

I think the history of PT is one thing. Releasing as song 55 years ago based on Pinball does not necessarily warrant being inducted to a Hall of Fame.

I'm open to be corrected, but I don't think Frank Skinner and David Baddiel have been inducted in to the National Football Hall of Fame yet?

What time frame is appropriate for someone to be inducted into a hall of fame?

David

No particular time frame but do you think Tommy was released to promote pinball, or as a money making exercise and pinball just happened to be the theme?
It doesn't matter. It effectively promoted pinball and brought in players into pinball.

Song and the album .
Even in the late sixties there was critism of the subject matter in the album. I believe Tony Blaclburn said it was sick.

Its a quirk of fate that the song lyric is Bally table King because its scans better than gottliieb who where the dominate manufacturer at the time. The movie uses kings and queens and buckaroo.

Bally marketing latched on and brought out wizard and then capt fantastic whose sales drawfed contemporary Bally games. Bally became number one and gottlieb fell behind in the solid state era.

Why don't you have a look yourself rather than listening to others that might not be right?

You could start https://www.nme.com/news/music/pete-townshend-3-1257981 - that told me I was wrong and he had made a charge to his credit card but immediately cancelled it. I found that out by researching the subject.

His story changes from "bought access and immediately cancelled" to "enter a site advertising child porn". These are his quoted words.
At no point in any of his interviews have I seen that he was the one that informed the police himself, nor that he didn't see child pornography. it only came to light after a police operation discovered it.
'Spoke informally to a friend' means absolutely sweet FA.

My point being if he did, you shouldn't be defending him.

Castration and life in prison is what any nonce deserves

He did know yes. It's said in big fcuk off letters. As I said before there is a documentary on it.

Trying to avoid all this as it's a shocking event but I'll add my little bit.

Sites like this just aren't in plain daylight. I certainly don't know of any. I'm guessing quite a bit of searching went into finding one and then accessing using your credit card just screams dark and evil intentions.

If you really wanted to take action in a positive manner, you find the sites and then report them to the authorities. But even then, it's a minefield and I'm sure your motives would be in question.

As I have said he was only cautioned and not convicted of any crime. If you look at the timeline it shows he released a statement before the police arrested him so he was in that minefield.

You missed out that he released the statement on 11th Jan 2003

The Who guitarist issued the following statement after a newspaper said an un-named musician was among people identified by US detectives investigating a pay-per-view web site.

He was arrested on 13th Jan 2003 following his statement above and reported in the link below
