Earlier this year I approached Pete Townshend if he would like to be inducted into the U.K. Pinball Hall of Fame.

He graciously accepted the nomination and his induction was formally announced at the recent Pinball Expo in Chicago.
The hall was filled to capacity and the announcement was met with rapturous applause.

The citation was ‘for shining the spotlight on pinball with the release of Pinball Wizard in 1969 and keeping pinball in the public consciousness ever since and, perpetuating pinball as part of pop culture throughout the World’.

There was an audible sigh of disappointment when I told the audience, Pete was unable to attend and receive the award in person.
However, I was able to share some words from Pete with those assembled.

Attached is a photo of the award; I will post a photo of Pete with the award in due course.

i wasn't even referring to the child porn download thing.
the pinball hall of fame surely belongs to those who have massively helped, like top designers, players, manufacturers, organisers, innovators.

Townshend is a musician. so he was involved in the best known pinball song, so what? is that enough?

"Townshend was placed on the sex offenders register for five years in 2003, after admitting he had used his credit card..."

Yeah you didn't really think this through did you?

Yeah but he'd still used his credit card to access the site.
Yes he did, the motive is covered in his book released 12 years ago.
If you were a legit nonce I’m not sure you would inform the authorities about doing something criminal beforehand, which he did.

So accessed a child porn site and funded it with his credit card? Guess that’s ok then?

Sorry but the guy shouldn’t get a pass for doing it.

He didn’t get a pass, he was put on the register. Nothing illegal was found on any of his devices which the authorities seized.

Apparently it's enough for Gary, and Gary alone.
Roger Daltrey or Elton John must have told him to do one

He was caught because of "Operation Ore".

There’s also proof that he contacted authorities before using his card details, he believed financial institutions should be held responsible for allowing transactions of that nature.

Naive, arrogant, stupid yes but he’s not a nonce.

he could have looked at everything on the site, and the only evidence would be that he paid to access it, which he admitted. there would only be images on his computer if he chose to download them, which he didn't, so the argument that nothing was found is moot.

by the way, plesae note that this is Gary Flower's personal 'pinball hall of fame' that is chosen by him alone, and not the UK one which has a committee and voters and uses public nominations, since 2008.

i am not having a pop at Gary, or even particularly at Pete Townshend whose music i still like. still amazed frankly that he still had a career after this came out, some deals were done that day. not a great choice, and just writing a song doesn't make someone a good figurehead for any topic.

I didn’t want to get dragged into this so will share some technical facts.
1) If you view a web site, you are viewing files downloaded to your cache. The images can be found on the local hard drive.
2) Digital forensic analysis tools would be capable of finding this sort of activity at the time.

Pete was not found to have any images locally, which could support his claim that he only tested he could use his bank card to gain access.
