I bought a 75" Samsung LED 4k TV just under three years ago. Cost a little under 2k. Was not a QLED, as 75" QLEDs cost serious money then.

I bought from Currys as it came with a free 5 year guarantee. John Lewis offered similar. Most retailers do not. Had I bought from Samsung direct, I would have been screwed

The screen showed internal damage. This TV gets used once a week max as it sits in a "film room" rather than a family, regularly used room.

Currys collected and then said the TV was irreparable Within a week. They said that 800 would replace it and sent an evoucher which looked like spam and went into my junk mail.

Before opening the mail I called Currys to check the voucher was kosher.

Luckily Samsung TVs have a PQI - Picture Quality Index to make comparisons easier.

My dead TV had a PQI of 2300. The proposed replacement 2000. So I spoke to the helpline and I ended up with a 1500 voucher which got me a 3500 PQI 75 inch QLED which is quite an upgrade. I got lucky as Samsung made nothing that met or exceeded the 2300, until you reach over 3000 PQIs for the QLEDs

Delivered ! It did take 4 phone calls, but Currys honoured its extended guarantee.

Moral is - get 5 year warranties when you buy a new LED TV as they do fail and then are worthless. 16077721742434929369108298937027.jpg

Yeah had grief with a65” LG OLED that I bought from Richer sounds, had a 5 or 6 year warranty. Had bad screen burn and had to fight to get money towards the next one, had it about 2 years or so.
Good to hear Curry‘s after sales service working.

I swear by Panasonic and they usually come wth 5 year warranty, But we bought from Richer Sounds a 65" Panasonic and they offer 6 years! Had it 3 years now but Panasonics never seem to fail, having said that it has an LG screen!

Got a 64 inch Samsung with the 6 year Richer sounds warranty ..... wonder if there's a way to sabotage it to get an upgrade :p

Exactly, all my panasonic tvs have worked perfectly every day. Never had a minutes trouble with any of them. The 100hz flat screen CRT outlived the analogue signal and the hd led one i have now has been going strong for years.

I've had a few panasonic tv over the years but I would say pioneer kuro is the best plasma screen I've ever had still got 2 and their still going strong with a cracking picture.

I’m rocking a Pioneer plasma still.

I had one repair in 2012 to a board but it’s been going strong for 16 years and still looks breathtaking with decent inputs. It plays old consoles really well too.

Tempting fate I know, but my 2008 pioneer kuro plasma is still going strong. They command reasonable money on ebay - maybe £200. Plug a £40 Roku streaming stick in and you have a smart TV.

The price of them has fallen sharply in the past couple of years as the qled and oled sets give decent blacks, and prices of 60 inch models right down. But it maybe took 7 yrs plus for 1080 LEDS to catch up with the 1080 plasmas.

Pioneer sold its plasma TV business to Panasonic who kept the tech going for a couple more years.

I currently run 2 x 65 Panasonic OLEDs and they are simply stunning with blacks better than that Blackest black paint ever made viral ad that keeps popping up on my google search feeds and FB.

Hi i had one of the last LED screens 75" Sony before they changed to 4K when it was 4yrs old i noticed 2 pink pixels, long story short Sony gave me a new 4k 75" which was selling for more than i paid. Thumbs up to Sony

I've got a 42"and a 60" pioneer kuro and a couple of weeks ago I put the 42" in my sons gaming room and took out the Panasonic, he's only 11 comes in from school straight on to the PlayStation to play call of duty after 5mins comes running down the stairs shouting dad have you changed my TV and I said yes and he says wow its a much better picture I can see everything in cod.
So one happy boy he doesn't know that the TV is older than him.

My 50" kuro is still in daily use too

I'm still rocking an LG Plasma in one room from 2009 i think. Most TV's are fixable with a swap of the main board or a few new components, a little 19" i use for schematics had a failed diode 5mins fix..

Not really sure what the top marks are for. Sounds like they reluctantly gave you a voucher

Basically its what you paid for (other than the hassle of chasing them)

I ended up with a better TV than I started with and a fresh 5 yr warranty. With current lamentable service levels throughout the UK / Covid .... I thought that was a result

Oh it’s a result ok (especially with currys) just it’s what you paid for (extended warranty) so it’s well done to curry’s for doing their job. Still good to get new stuff and not to be sniffed at.

I'm in a legal battle with Currys after they sold me a pretty expensive OLED last black friday. One year on and numerous calls, emails and contact with their legal department and they still refuse to issue a refund. This has been through the 'small claims court', mediation and now going to the county court next year. The scumbags have recently offered partial refund for a faulty TV that they haven't yet inspected. Getting them to do anything in nigh on impossible.

It is not the first run in that I have had with currys but previously gave them the benefit of the doubt. Wrong move. I will never ever buy anything from these rip off merchants again. Great place to go and look and play with the products but I would strongly advise to buy elsewhere.

You've been warned!!

I had a 60" Sony TV with a 5 year warranty and about 4 months from the end of the warranty I had some ghosting on the screen, they sent a chap out and said we won't fix that and about 1 week later a nice 65" TV turned up, happy days.

In my recent dealings, i think it's just a case of actually getting someone that gives a toss... I went through 4 or 5 people who didnt, and then found someone that did. It shouldnt be like that.... It just seems that due to CV19 it gives people an excuse and something to hide behind....

Multiple 2 hour phone calls (1h50m queueing), and emails via ebay that take 5 days to respond to - it just isnt good enough. I get that these are unusual times, however they have had 9 months to get used to it and get things in place....

To be fair, there are a lot of other larger companies that this applies to... the smaller ones really have gone the extra mile though... however with the ongoing threat of smaller retailers going out of business it's really a case of risking it either way!
