Stern Theme Survey

It's such a badly designed survey.

I have no idea what they are actually asking with themes that already exist - there are multiple ways to interpret that, so any results they get will be a meaningless. E.g. are they asking, would I put a quid in/buy NIB one of those existing games? Or are they asking, do I want them to create another version of the same theme?!

Sending this to people who subscribe to the Stern Newsletter, are they really going to get anyone not ticking the "I would play this" for any theme? So in other words asking, "So this theme is so offensively bad in your opinion, that you, as a pinball enthusiast, wouldn't even put a quid in it"? Or do they mean something else, something that isn't a binary yes/no choice - e.g. I think a Goonies pin would be good, so I'll tick yes to that, but I think Rage Against The Machine wouldn't be great, so I'll tick no to that (even though in reality I would put a quid in it)? People will interpret this in different ways, again making the results meaningless.

And finally, the list is also way too long - I got bored before the end.

Rubbish!

My initial thoughts were I’d always stick a quid into a machine regardless of theme. (Well maybe not a Michael Jackson or P Diddy one)

But then it occurred to me. I don’t think I actually have now for over 5 years. I cant even remember the last time I had any change on me.

I know Matt’s machines in Brewdog use some kind of app but I’ve never downloaded it. Casual use must have fallen over another cliff edge.

Agree with all of this - and I filled it in on my phone, and on the long list of IPs with the play / buy options it kept taking me to the top of the page every time I scrolled up even a tiny bit by accident. Very frustrating.

Also, you could tick both I’d play it and I’d buy it - but as you correctly point out, with no instructions how you complete it was open to interpretation. Personally I ticked I’d play it for games I wouldn’t mind seeing but likely wouldn’t own, and ticked both boxes for games I’d like to see and would consider owning - because hey, I’d both play and (possibly) buy them right?

You’re also right re themes that have already been done either by Stern or another manufacturer. I assumed they were asking about new games using that IP but they didn’t specify so could easily be wrong.

Maybe they were looking to compare overall interest in titles they had done to titles they haven’t done (ie they know Ghostbusters was popular - so be good for them to know if another movie IP had more interest) but then why are only some recent IPs included and not others?

Even more confusing is that they included IPs that other manufacturers are rumoured to have like The Matrix and Harry Potter - are they trying to work out what games they could release to compete with them, or if they should also try and secure the license???

It would have been smarter and generated more meaningful results to have more options for each title (definitely not interested, probably not interested, don’t really care, probably interested, definitely interested, shut up and take my money) and also to have different pages for each type of media with a ranking question last - ie asking for your top five of the above film / tv / music options instead of asking for your one favourite of all the suggested titles.

Strange survey.

Rumours that Pink Floyd is in the pipeline somewhere, no further comment on whether it would be album specific ( The Wall ) or generic.

Guaranteed sell out on that one I'd bet.

They all sell out, regardless of theme, you if are talking about LEs?

However, I am not sure why Pink Floyd would sell better than any other music game?

The first time I looked at the survey, I ticked every theme for 'would I play this?' because - yes - I'm happy to put a quid in literally anything.

Then, I decided I wanted to discourage Stern from producing more obscure grandad rock pins (😈), so I only ticked stuff I was familiar with.

There were a handful of themes I'd buy. Mostly, I was delighted they'd included Warhammer. Because, in the grim darkness of the distant future, there is only... pinball (once the tech priests have finished blessing the machines).

Having existing IP's in the survey is to check demand for vault editions, the hobby has exploded in the last 5 years

Also good to potentially have other company's IP's in there to plan strategically what machines to put up for sale against them

Agreed re upcoming IPs from other manufacturers like The Matrix and Potter, but what about existing IPs from other companies that have come and gone? Alien, Halloween, Guns n Roses, Godfather etc all on there.

They also included IP from current Stern games like and Jaws and X-Men. They can’t be checking demand for vault editions of those already.

Checking their current IP's may check what kind of number they have left in those licenses

More options don't always produce better results

Black Knight Sword of Rage. Didn't sell very well.

Yeah that's one well done, haven't played it but like a lot of original theming they will be marmite anyway but they'd hit the jackpot at some point.

In an ideal world they would have license division and they are your 8K-10K games, then originals coming in lower.

Time Machine
Torpedo Alley
Checkpoint
High Roller Casino
Strikers Xtreme
Grand Prix
Whoa Nellie

Yeah a few since LW but still a long time. I think they just put nellie on their line they didn't design that.

Torpedo and Checkpoint are decent games not given the others much chance, played TM a few times but not one I would own.
