Stargate left gate problem

The left gate seems to be a bit of a bar steward inasmuch when you shoot the ball up the shooter lane it rolls back and goes across a wire ramp, past an opto which should open the gate so you don't lose the ball. It seems very random in its operation. Opto checks OK in test. It's not too happy about opening in game play when another switch should open it.
Any ideas or is it something you have live with.

Sounds like a mechanical fault? The one we have at work is just fine, iirc the slings will change its position, and also the extra ball switch coming out of the pops.

Try cleaning the opto with IPA.

There's more than just the opto sw that operates the gate.

Try finding a bad connection (solder break? or reseat connectors?), other (sling?) switch issue or opto beginning to fail then?
