Went to Funland in Brunswick tonight. First off they have really reduced their pinball selection. Down to 6 games now. Godzilla is gone. It is the first time I had been in a while. And in my downtime I had been making some good progress playing my Eight Ball Deluxe. Building some nice scores and improving my games. In Funland I played a few games of Jaws which is my dream game and the one I always gravitated towards in previous visits. But I have to say I enjoyed it a lot less then normal. I found the game to be annoyingly easy and that I never really had any idea what was going on. The ball returned to the flippers very easily and it almost never drained.

Made me think that maybe I just enjoy the classic games more. It's a quick 5-10 minute fix and I feel like I have to really manipulate the game to get a high score. The ruleset is also easy for anyone to follow. There is also that fear that the ball could drain at any moment. I know a lot of people love the classics. But I am 40 so I have no nostalgia to those games. I am aware that maybe it could just be my mind convincing me I don't need a Jaws as it is so expensive. Or the fact that these games take time to learn and are confusing at first until you learn them.

I would still love a Jaws as an art piece as anything else. But maybe I am just a simple dude who likes simples games.

Btw if anyone is selling a Jaws then let me know........

For a modern game that is short, hard, great fun and relatively easy to understand Iron Man and Avatar (Stern) are both great choices.

Most people prefer Iron Man of that pair, but I still love and play my Avatar more than most of my games

Agreed, Iron Man is a game I miss. Easy to learn yet hard to master. I’ve enjoyed Avatar when I’ve played it but never owned one due to theme - still confused why JJP thought it was a good idea to release another.

The other modern game that scratches the same short / hard / fun / simple itch is Total Nuclear Annihilation. Really miss my old one.

Nothing wrong with liking older games at all, new ones are great at home where you have months to explore, commercial setting..... perhaps if people like us who visit pinball forums, restore and collect games struggle to figure out the rules, its gone a bit too far.

One thing I have noticed is games with dangerous shots, seem to be rated lower in reviews, in general longer shots with return to the flippers seem to be preferred by most, fighting to control the ball after every shot is a different sort of challenge.

If you go back, you'll probably enjoy John Wick. It has that 'knife fight in a phone booth' feel.

I've always found Jaws both a bit 'easy' feeling (even as a bad player) and it seems to have far too many rules for the level of satisfaction.

I definitely enjoy the 90s DMD pins more. Creech, WH2O, FT, TAF etc. Easy to learn, difficult to master. I tend to play 5 or 10 mins here or there at home, and don't always have time to strap in for a 45min game on the latest Stern!

I can highly recommend visiting Pinball Republic in Croydon for playing a huge range of games, from classic to modern.
Best of all for you most of them are set up difficult for competition play.
There is also a Jaws premium there to play that has a tight tilt, plays fast and doesn’t give extra balls. It would be interesting to hear how you get on playing that version compared to the Funland version which very “floaty” in comparison.

Nothing wrong with classic games mate.

I'm lucky enough to have some decent modern machines but Dolly Parton still gets played all the time and I have my eye on another 81 Bally in the near future and I'd like to get an old Stern classic too.

Something about the simplicity and brutality of those older games.

Agree with Chris P above, get along to PBR in Croydon. As well as a huge variety of games from all eras they have a selection of awesome classics that you don't see in many places, Ali, Magic, Nine Ball, Big Game, Centaur, the list goes on.

I think PBR Jaws right outlane save post is only working a part time contract.

Classic’s / modern’s though? Both are sweet! Modern’s drags are the longer ball time/tension sapping ball saves but then they do have more depth, and payoff with wizard modes and a multiball skill set to master.

Classics often have great art though, you can tap-pass, chimes/80’s sounds are fun, and I think you improve you skills quicker on them.

Best to just get one of each I reckon.
