Okay a guick dog post -

I have two pomapoos. One is 18kg other 22kg - two sisters. They are 8 years old.

The vet says we need to get their teeth cleaned by putting them under, also one needs a single tooth extracted.

They have quoted £1000 for one, and £1200 for the other (to include extraction).

About 3 years ago they were spayed. This was less than half the price. And I would imagine a harder procedure, and that also took into account for the cost of the medication afterwards.

I think my vets (who we have a plan with) - is over charging......

My insurance does not cover dental either I have found out.
Sounds like you need to go to an independent vet, loads are corporate owned now and ripping people off.
Wife works for an equestrian hospital and these ripoff prices cost more than major horse work!

We had a similar suggestion from our vet and we said you must be joking. To be fair our cavapoo does have plaque that has built up and needs addressing - finger brush + doggy toothpaste is about £8 for quick DIY if they’ll let you.

We met another poodle cross with lovely teeth, they use seaweed additive in the food… seems this stops plaque forming but doesn’t remove existing stuff. So we use that and our dog groomer now offers ultrasonic brushing which starts breaking down and removing the existing gunk… you can buy the ultrasonic brushes on Amazon but I think they’re £150 or something! We’ve had 2 treatments and you can see an improvement so hopefully this will work.

Good advice - thanks - I think once we get them sorted then I will get some of that additive.

I just got back from taking the dog out on the beach, always on a lead.

A women with 2 German shepherds was in the distance, one of them decided to run towards us with her screaming at him but the dog totally ignored her.
Large long haired German shepherd with a muzzle on charging into my dog but couldn’t bite as muzzle on, my dog was on one of those retractable leads and I was trying to get her closer but she slipped the collar and was gone like a bat out of hell hurding the groins then up the slipway and out of site.

I ran and screamed after her, I’m just over 6’ and nearly 18 stone so after about 400m I was fooked!
Was hoping she would be by the car in the car park but no joy, someone said they saw her go through the car park so went up the single track lane shouting etc but nothing.
Walked back to the car furious about the situation thinking that’s the last I will see of her and spoke to some tourists who said that someone told them that dog has done that before, I recognised the dog because I have seen it before with her husband and he has to cross the road as it goes ballistic.

Anyway I looked back up to where the lane is where she went and could see her coming down it, called her and the bitch just legged it back up. Jumped in my car and flew up the single track lane and got behind her, she wouldn’t stop. Floored it and narrowly got around her and cut across her to block knowing she will go around drivers side so opened my door but she went passed but luckily she stopped and got her into the back of the car.

Then went back to find the owner of the other dog and I went mental at her telling her I have been told the dog has done this before and I have seen it with her husband before and he has to cross the road with it. I told her I recently put a dog down that was dangerous like that and she was lucky I wasn’t with that one as he would have killed it, she said “I wished it did!!!” Told her to keep it on the lead etc.

Oh man what a morning, thought I lost my dog!

Nightmare! I dread that kind of situation, even when it's a small friendly dog that comes running over. I've got Apple Air Tags on my dogs collars in case they get away while we're out. That didn't help yesterday when one of them jumped the back fence in persuit of our new neighbours cat.

Jeez. You should report it to the council dog warden so at least it's logged.
I would have gone a tad crazy myself.
I got her reg no. will think about it and talk with family. Will see if it’s not on a lead next time as I go there a few times a week.
Might be putting her harness back on for a while, but they can slip them too if you are not careful🫣

Yeah I had that with my other dog, always on a lead and mega aggressive with everything. Small dog approaches and I’m screaming at the owner to get the dog away or it might get killed and that’s no lie which is why I put him down. Just not worth it and couldn’t be helped, so stressful.
Cat used to sit out of reach in our garden as we have high chain link fencing and they would go mental, if that cat made a mistake it would have been ripped to pieces.

Something that just came to me, I was fuming but relieved I got her back. I was going to drive back way too angry.
I had to go up the single track road to turn around, there was a church there and as I reversed next to it a vicar appeared from the gates with 2 dogs on leads so started chatting to him. He thought I was lost and explained what just happened, had a conversation with him which I don’t normally do as I keep to myself usually and not really chatty.

I’m not religious at all but believe in fate and that was meant to be as I get really angry😊

Unbelievable!

There's not much worse than that feeling when your dog legs it, even temporarily.. been there once or twice, just horrible. I use a GPS tracker now (tractive), brilliant and cheap peace of mind.. battery lasts for weeks as well.

Yes they are good, I never let her off the lead so never really needed and can’t escape the garden. The collar slipped off so would have been useless if they are attached to the collar.
If I did off lead 100% I would get one but Thai Ridgebacks off lead isn’t a good idea unless they are mega trained and 100% recall in any situation, very high prey drive.

My knees are killing me now.

When they leg it you really have no chance.

Poor Belle was just a puppy when I took her to the park. It’s on one of the tallest hills in London.

Saw a storm in the distance and the next second there was a gigantic explosion directly above. I’ve never heard thunder like it.

Poor dog simply took off. Crossed three roads and found her way back home absolutely freaked.

Scared the crap out of me when she went.

Weirdly she’s now virtually immune to thunder and fireworks. Guess they get used to things.

I'd started letting mine off the lead in certain situations when there were no other dogs around. On one occasion he tried to chase an aeroplane flying overhead. That was pretty bad but not as bad as when I let him off on the beach and he decided to chase seagulls. They kept flying away and then he'd spot another one further away etc etc. Within seconds he was a speck on the horizon. I'm stood there shouting my lungs out and he's in another town at this point. Eventually he did come back but was still hellbent on getting to the seagulls which were now out at sea. The dog is nuts. Never been off the lead since that day.

I let my Rhodesian Ridgeback off the lead in the right places, and he will run over to other dogs but then largely lies down before then slowly approaching, if the other dog is aggressive, he runs back.
His prey drive has been strong but he always comes back when outwitted. I think the squirrel in the garden taught him that he won't catch most of them.

I learned about his behaviour from the situation that didn't fully go the way I planned but actually worked out, he needed to learn what being a dog means too. We found dogs who could play with him and he learnt how to socialise and that showed me how far he would take play and if he was aggressive. I know him enough to let my kid play with him (whilst we are in the vicinity) and the most he will do is knock her over.

One of the problems with mine is that when a dog approaches he lays down, which normally in most breeds is a sign to say "I'm not a threat". Except he's half Border Collie and the lying down means the exact opposite. It means he's going into hunt mode and will pounce as soon as they get within range.

Some dogs most people just shouldn’t have, this is the problem.
Also bad breeding comes into it, I know some male Thai Ridgebacks can be bad news and not changed. That was from a top breeder and my experience, my bitch is totally different but you still got to watch her when kids are about. She normally takes herself away from them so they can’t touch her.

Look at this ad, all bitches sold quick. Then read what the breeder is saying, trust me it’s not worth the trouble😂

I have been giving my dog the seaweed powder stuff but what has made a big difference to cleaning her teeth is giving her a raw chicken wing everyday, saved me a small fortune on the other chews I was giving her which were the chicken type chew sticks at £7 for 330 grams!
I just buy a bag of frozen from Tesco and thaw one at a time, cheap as chips👍

She crunches them up using all her teeth and is fine with them, nothing left. Probably best watched if not had them before.

I know a lot of vets practices have been bought out by big groups( venture capital?) and are run for profit now, I know they’ve always been businesses but now there’s an extra tier of profit to be made. Cost does seem excessive, they’re not that big and as you pointed out anaesthetic with spaying is a lot less. I’d not be willing to risk anaesthetic for tooth cleaning( something we’ve never done in 50 years and 12+ dogs) mind you we didn’t use to feed tinned food, last 6 years or so we have been and can see the plaque build up from it.

Yeah my wife works for an independent horse hospital and it is cheaper to fix a horse there than a dog in those big group buy out vets😏

Tried and tried with dry food but no joy, still mix some in with tinned but she will still leave the dry a lot of the time.
Bloody fussy dog but can’t blame her.

Vets are a total nightmare. The slightest thing is megabucks. Our Beagle cross is prone to ear infections so that ends up costing me £250 a pop every few months.
