Post-Pinfest Gottlieb Revue

I'd never played a Goldwings before and I must admit it's the one game at the show that I kept going back to constantly (besides Joker Poker when I was allowed to play it)

I do love those standup target kickers though ( I think most people don't even notice them, they never get mentioned )

The Haunted House at a local arcade was easier to play due to the kicking targets not working (they registered/scored, but didn't kick). Otherwise I might not have found that it had an automatic reset for the Highest Score; once it exceeded 970,000 starting a new game saw it reset to 770,000.

I found that Gold Wings requires the upper flipper to be good in order to make the spiral corkscrew ramp. Once it deteriorates that's a no-go.

As I mentioned in a post in the main pinfest thread, I absolutely loved the Gottlieb row. i spent a fair chunk of time there over the weekend. Even managed to get high score on Monte carlo, randomly haha. Then couldn;t figure out how to add my initials, since the flipper buttons don;t move the letters. SOmeone had to tell me it was the buttons on the front (I think that might have been you @MajesticPinball ?)
I've played a lot of them in virtual form, but not the real things before. I also love the quirky layouts. As much as I love modern games too, and I do, the layouts were much more varied in this era of games, and that's something I love about older games.
I think this was the first time playing goldwings for me too. What a nutty layout! I love it. It's so weird playing with the main flippers so off centre. it takes some getting used to, because you're used to having the ball drop onto the flippers when it's in a certain position heading in a certain direction, on most games, but this throws all of that right out of the window, and you have to try to readjust your reactions.

TX sector is awesome too. That's a game i've loved virtually in the past, so was great to spend some time playing the real thing too.

Genie is always fun, but i've played that a little before, and wanted to spend a bit more time playing the ones that were new to me.
I do agree that the backglasses are...well, let's be kind and call the 'different' haha. But, it makes them stand out from the crowd a bit too, and it was 40 years ago, times were different.
In the end, when you're playing, you don;t really spend much time looking up there anyway.

But yeah, this was great, I hope I get to play them all again sometime :)

I just wish there was the opportunity to play games like these a bit more often for me 😁

Huge thanks for allowing me (us) to enjoy them for the weekend!

I saw the opposite of that; at an arcade in Weston, two young women were playing a Gottlieb machine (it was a Monte Carlo, in fact), 'one flipper each'. The one at the left was okay, but the one at the right thought the initial entry buttons operated the flipper.

Addition - Thinking on it again, Monte Carlo has that feature of 'freezing' the lamps scanning across the top rollovers, by holding the flipper. So it must have some means of sensing that, such as a 'lane change/Status Report' switch on the flipper, making the cabinet buttons for initial entry seem even dafter

I'm currently borrowing @MajesticPinball 's Arena and Genesis.

We know Genesis is amazing so I won't talk about it in this post, but ARENA, wow.

Ok at first I thought it's silly with that million skillshot (more like luckshot) but upon blocking that hole up the game suddenly comes to life.

With it as intended you only need to shoot one shot then the ramp to get another shot at the million, rinse and repeat... awful.
But when you can't do that you realise how great the rest of the game is.

In the middle of the playfield is what at first you assume is bunch of bonus multiplier inserts.. but no. They are the playfield multipliers which apply during multiball. To increase these you have to complete one of the two banks of three stand up targets, labeled CYS (what is CYS?!). Completing both of these also gives you a new award on the skill shot tied to how many times you've hit the ramp.

On the right there's some chunky drop targets that are supposed to resemble a wall, the sound effect they make when you knock one down is amazing, a crumbling wall! Behind them is three targets that give you either special or extra ball on the skillshot (I forget which, but both worth 500k)

Top left is 3 rollovers which you can lane change, these let you lock the balls for multiball.

Before work I got the No1 high score at over 12mil, the next highest was 8mil, (sorry James), just by going for the pf multiplier and multiball. I got a few of the million skillshots (I have unblocked it to see how I could do as the current high scores would have had it open too).

I'm surprised by this game, the shots are so satisfying and it flows surprisingly well for a Gottlieb (going by my experience). It's so fun when you have to make nearly all of the shots on the playfield, trying to get your multiplier up before starting multiball while also unlocking the special and ramp values on the skill shot.

It is a shame they designed it with such an unbalanced and luck based skillshot which I think makes people blind to how the rest of the game plays.

Thanks to those of you who brought the Gottliebs to Pinfest. I really enjoyed seeing and playing so many unusual machines. About 5 years ago I played a Stargate at Pinfest and enjoyed it so much I had to get one. Ive only just moved it on to another forum member. When we had visitors over it was always a very popular machine and totally reliable.

That was quite possibly me, i pointed the front buttons out to quite a few high-scorers over the weekend, I will never understand Gottliebs decision to do that and not just use the flipper buttons (its not as if the machine doesn't already have 2 buttons which would be ideal for name entry lol) I'm glad you enjoyed them, it was great to see them being relatively popular during the show, wish I checked the audits beforehand to see how many games got put up on each

Maybe it was to keep your hands as near to the coin slot as possible😂

My pleasure, hopefully I'll have more than 5 by next year so can pollute the show room with even more (insert evil laugh) Stargate is one of my all time favourite games, had it at Pinfest 2019 but had to sell it shortly after due to lack of space, a huge regret. I've always found the System 3 Gottliebs to be pretty dependable too.
