Pinled CPU board

Folks, I've just bought a Pinled CPU board to replace the battery-ravaged board in my BoP. I need to remove three chips from the old board, including something called the ASIC. Do I need to buy the specialist tool that I've read about, or can I use the simple method of gently prising with two micro-screwdrivers? I'm no expert (as Poibug will tell you), but I need to get better at stuff like this...

You should buy a specialist tool but if you're like me you use screwdrivers coz there isn't one to hand... :thumbs:
 
I just replaced a game rom - removed the old one with a screwdriver very gently. Took two mins. First time I'd done it and no problems.

Get Poibug to do it for you Jim.
Can be tricky if you haven't done chip removal before.

An 'ordinary' Dual In-Line (DIL) chip such as a program E-prom or processor chip can be extracted from a socket by careful use of a small screwdriver or similar levering tool, but the square ASIC (I think it's U9 on the Wpc board) is a different matter. At a technician lecture back then, Mr. Cahill from Williams gave out specially-bent screwdrivers for removing DIL chips, but cautioned against using anything other than the dedicated tool for the ASIC.
 
yes for the asic you should use a proper tool - super easy to damage such chips.
 
Wow... really don't fancy the paper-clip method! Thanks for all the suggestions, I need to give this some thought. I'll report back...

Correct but the old one is battery acid damaged so not important in this instance.

I have probably swapped half a dozen or so using the not recommended screwdriver method. I think it depends if you are confident in handling chips or not. Certainly do not touch the pins of the chip when extracting it.

Thanks to everyone... I consulted Poibug, who said the ASIC is tricky indeed and that you need the proper tool, and that he happens to have one. He's just popped over and sorted it all for me, and then repaired the duff background illumination to boot. My only contribution to the whole process was bacon sandwiches! BoP now working properly, thanks to Poibug and to Phil at Pinball Heaven, who supplied the new Pinled board. Thank you one and all, especially Johnnyo for the offer of the tool loan.
