Now they are getting serious! The library are so impressed with the comments they have got since the pins were put on display they have organised a 'pinball day'! A lot of people of all ages are going for it and its good to see that they are being played and enjoyed. The librarians say they will really miss them when I bring them home. They would love to have a permanent one on site but they don't think the council would approve the purchase in these tough times!!

Don't let Mr Arub see that, he will be there.

Well tonight was the day!! The library organised a pinball challenge which ran from 2pm until 6pm with prizes for the highest scores. At first it was mainly adults and about 30 people battled it out including our local police beat officers who came 5th and 27th.
Once the schools finished all hell let loose!! About 40 children all turned up at once and with only 2 pins it was mayhem!
A great day had by all and hopefully some new converts....

"Tonight was the day" ..What am I saying! Talk about bad English.
You know what I meant.

Fantastic stuff Dalek, I love this kind of stuff, makes you see that there is still an audience for these machines and that we aren't all crazy blokes who are harking back to a bygone era, I really do think that there is a place for pinball in today's popular culture, just perhaps not in the same places that they used to be.

Like Grizz said in an earlier thread, I did (and am still doing) something similar. You can see a write up of the competition that I held at my school here http://www.colstons.bristol.sch.uk/09-news/Housepinballcomp2012.html

The machines have been in the school now for over a year. I rotate them all every couple of months and have put about 10 machines in different houses in total. The machines are still played every day on a daily basis with a cohort of dedicated players in each house that are always keen to get a new machine and desperately compete for the top score.

Keep up the great work,

Craig

That's great work!! sounds like good fun was had all round, well done.:thumb:

Such a great story...I might pop down my local library and show them this!

Was the high-score competition held on just one of the two machines or did both qualify?

Thinking of doing something similar at Lancaster Uni.

I ran a separate competition on each pin to keep things simple. The scores were kept by the library staff throughout the day so I didn't want to create anything too complicated.
I am now being told that they will really miss them after nearly two months but the 'powers that be' are not too happy with the idea of a permanent pinball presence in their libraries! Shame, but I can see their point. We have to restrict use to certain times due to noise!

Well that's it. Today I brought my two pins home from the library after about two months away. I know it sounds sad,but I really missed them... this afternoon I didn't know whether to play them or just give them a hug!
For the record the library reckon that over a hundred people played them and their attendance figures jumped right up, which went down well with their bosses at the Council. They tell me that during the week it was mainly adults that played with the children taking over at weekends.
I have to say it was a very rewarding experience and I made a lot of new friends. I was even given chocolate as a thank you present from one of the kids ... can't get better that that!

Dalek, give yourself a massive pat on the back. Amazing story!!!, and has made my day reading this thread. A really novel idea that has now made aware a few hundred more people to this amazing hobby. The kids playing these games are now aware that games do exist outside of playstation and x box. You cant beat the 3 dimensional side of the game.

Thanks for your comments gearsownthree.
I admit I found it a very rewarding experience, especially introducing so many kids to pinball. It's just such a shame that they are going to find it difficult to find a pin to play.

Congrats on bringing the silverball back to the people and introducing it to the younger generation to enjoy.

Saw an ep of Simpsons today and Bart said "wow a real pinball machine the graphics are so good the ball looks real" sadly this is mostly the case with most kids they just want computer games. I wish my son was still in the uk I'd love to get him into the silver ball
