Pinball Gameplay & Tutorial Videos

Last week I was busy with PBR so didn't upload a tutorial but instead took you guys on a tour of the new Pinball Republic which I didn't post here, this week we take a look a Bally's Doctor Who from 1992! I've tried to make the tutorials a little more detailed recently and also now don't comment during the gameplay sections - I hope that seems to be going down well with people? I might also stop posting new videos on this thread soon as it doesn't get a lot of interaction anymore and I don't want to clutter the forum with something nobody wants to look at - never the less uploads will keep coming every Monday so subscribe to keep informed.
My favourite early 90s machine! Great video and you played that multiball really well to get through a couple of rounds of jackpots.

Whether it’s a good idea or not, when trying to light video mode I tend to aim for the TARDIS to spot the escape letters, because I find the escape targets themselves really dangerous. It is a case of playing the pops lottery (which you talk about) but with Doc 1 you only need to get into the TARDIS three times to light video mode and you’re collecting transmat progress along the way. Interested to know if others play it the same or if I just need to get better at surviving the escape targets 😄

Looks great can't wait to put my name back on the high scores list 😁

Unfortunately I lost footage of 2 really good games, my camera was having a bit of a meltdown so ended up with these 2 okay-at-best games 😂 Interesting to know other people's strategy with this game, I only found out about the Tardis feed awarding escape letters during my last game so didn't mention it in the video as never knew it happened 😂 certainly a safer shot than aiming directly for the targets but as you could probably tell I sucked at shooting the lane for the bumpers and this particular machine loves to kick the ball out the side of the jets instead of feeding the tardis

From what I’ve observed there seem to be two main strategy camps:

- Doc 6, shoot loops and sonic booms all day and ignore everything else. With sonic booms 40m each it’s probably the best for people with amazing shot accuracy who don’t get bored.

- Doc 1, qualify video mode, shoot a lock to allow you to switch to Doc 6, ideally loop up to 4x playfield and then play as many waves of video mode as you can. Shoot a couple of loops whenever multiplier drops too low for your liking and then back into more video mode.

I don’t see too many people going for multiball as their main objective off the bat because it’s a lot of work and pretty difficult to survive shooting the Time Expander that much. Pretty high risk high reward but amazing when it comes off.

Please don't stop, I for one love these and really appreciate them all, even the games I never heard of are pure fun to watch and to admire your skills.

I appreciate you saying that Dan and your support 😊 I don't intend to stop uploading videos, what I meant was that I might just stop posting about them on this thread

I favoured Doc 4 (correction, 6), giving full increments of playfield multiplier rather than in 1/2 stages. A complete Sonic Boom at 4X multiplier is 120 million, and accumulating them (along with 'normal' W-H-O sequences) lights Extra Ball.

I always brick the sonic boom 🤦‍♂️ I can hit the ramp any other time when it's not important though 😂

Not looked in detail yet cos I' on my lunch & just thought of it - have
you got tutorials uploaded for all the machines in the PBR bank at the Open?

Just had a quick look through, I haven't covered any of the games in the PBR bank 😬 Hoping to film more PBR games soon if I can so I'll try and address that!

Doc 4 spots repair targets, Doc 6 is the one who gives the enhanced playfield X increments.

Barry Oursler designed the playfield x as the key feature and deliberately assigned it to Colin Baker as the least popular doctor

Its rumoured that when Williams negotiated the license they were offered red dwarf in a package but nothing came of it.

Interesting that both the pinball and the bell fruit timelord fruit machine came out whilst the TV show was in "hiatus"

We still have prototype #2 in bits and although Courtney has lost her pinball mojo it will hopefully be resurrected eventually

Oh, my recollection's off, then. Sorry.

The trickiest thing I found with Sonic Boom was the first stage, the front ramp for 'W'. After almost automatically looping the Cliffhanger ramp, I'd have to readjust to make that first shot, after which the second and third were pretty much routine.

It may not have a direct bearing on play, but DW was the only game I saw with a software monitoring feature for the jet bumpers; I don't recall if it was a visible audit entry, but it maintains a tally of hits on each of the bumpers. If one falls outside a fairly close parity with the others (e.g. due to the coil not working) a report appears about it. Not 'Check Switch ##', but pointing out that it's varying from the others.

That’s a cool fact about the bumpers!

For me the hardest part of the combo is getting the loop at the end. Depending on how clean you hit the H shot the ball might be coming back at different speeds, so even though the shot itself is quite wide there is some adjustment needed to make that first loop. Always a great feeling when you string it together. My inconsistency with this is why my default strategy is video mode 😂

It's also the only occurrence of what I think WMS called 'Self Check', an improved test mode accessed by holding Enter (as for High Score Reset), but then also Up and Down simultaneously. This includes a Vibration Test, which cycles through the solenoids at increasing speed, stopping to identify any unexpected switch changing state, a Trough/Outhole test, Coin Pulse width indication and a Flipper timing test, which none of the three I unpacked passed out of the box.

The Time Expander has a compensation adjustment, to modify play if it's broken down. With the mini-playfield at its lowest level, the eject holes (which alter to 'virtual locks') and centre target substitute for the hemispheres of level two and then the subway entries of level three. Maybe I shouldn't say so, but I quite liked playing it like this. There wasn't the predictability in multiball of the subway returning balls to the right flipper.

Had no idea about the added software/tests in this game, that's all pretty fascinating, thanks for sharing as I'd never of known otherwise 🤩

This week we have another gameplay only video on Gottliebs Victory, if you want to learn how to play check the link in the video description as I have already done a tutorial for Victory! Next week we will be looking at one of Gottlieb's best DMD machines Stargate

If the is was the one at Pinfest- what a beautiful example and a great game. Really enjoyed it!
This is the one from Pinfest yes :) Thrilled to hear you enjoyed it, it's such a cool game and the checkpoint sequence can be pretty challenging to progress, especially the first one.

Cool layout, only managed one (very bad!) game on this at PinFest and obviously couldn’t hear any of the callouts. Looks challenging and the FINISH target bank looks quite deadly

Majestic (James?) i'm a fan. i'm not sure if we've met but if not then i look forward to it as i like your style. i really enjoyed the background info you gave on the game (but not so keen on making the rules explanation take a whole 12 minutes) and wondered - do you just talk it through on the fly, or prepare a script and read from that? How steep is your playfield generally, as i think the ball seems to run a little slower than i'm used to (i tend to keep the back legs full out and the front ones full in) but that may be normal, i'm not sure but something in my amygdala is telling me that 6.5degrees is standard. Anyway. i'm not a fan of this particular game personally, i never really could make friends with Gotty flippers, but i really appreciate the effort and attention you have put in, and must go and check out your channel. is there an easy list of the games you've done a video demo of? i've owned a lot of games but the ones i'm focused mainly on are the ones in my signature that i've sought out and put back in my final stable. i really want to see your videos of RG and POTC for some reason, if you've done those. the Stern POTC, not the remake. i'm an old old geezer and don't follow any games made in the last 15 years, like my music tastes.

Stargate!! The game that got me into pinball 😍 (this exact machine in fact)

Thanks for sharing this weeks upload, I've been having a break from the forum and forgot to post it on here this week.

Generally I talk through it on the fly, Stargate was my longest tutorial and I also cut out about 4 minutes off extra bits as knew it was getting a bit lengthy. I always put the gameplay timestamp in the video description if you do get bored of listening to the rules. 6.5 Degrees normally - generally if a game is in the workshop I leave the legs how the customer has them set so some play a lot slower than I personally would like. I've covered Rollergames, yet to do Stern POTC. Complete list of machines featuring on the channel so far:
