Log Cabin

It'll look better than the current translite. I think it just looks a bit bare and thrown together lastminute.Com. Which apparently it was!!
I just checked your thread Gaz and I can't see it, can we see? Doesn't it have loads of cool creepy clowns on? And some weird hair bloke on the right?

What thickness and glazing do people recommend? I need to start working out the budget and costs as the Wife has green lighted this when some other work is complete on the house.
Is 45mm thickness good enough or should I go 130mm DuelTherm(??).
Should I just get 45mm and then insulate the inside?

Glazing? Why do you want sunlight in a pinball room? ;)

Yep I squeezed it in had to move taf to the kitchen! Only prob is keep walking into the dam gun handle trying to get out the door, my cabin is all booked to be built on 28th June, went for 12x24 in the end!
You'll regret not getting 12'6 x 24'6 - 13 pins just squeeze in nicely in that size

Due to the location of the cabin, it will be a prominent feature in the garden so I have agreed it must look pleasing to the eye. I will put blackout bind up to block sunlight from the windows.

View attachment 7225 Don't know Scotty, 7m x 3m is cutting it fine for 12 pins, that's if you want them all up and running.
I've got 8 set up and I'm full, don't know what I'm gonna do when PRED & HOBBIT are here! I could fit 12 in, 7 across the back and two on each side, but that would be tight

Hey Dave,

Do you keep the cabin warm during the winter months, and how do you do this? also any idea on the cost of heating?

You see I am going to have to build a cabin at some time in the not too distant future...

I presume the walls are double-up with insulation as well as insulated floor and roof?

Cheers

My pinroom is one brick, with approx 2" dense foam insulation on the walls,6" dense foam insualtion in the roof, with two dehumifiers in.
Cold winter days its still about 5 degrees unheated.

I dont understand anyone who would not insulate, and stop moisture build up in a pin room with say 10 pins in.
10 pins can easily be £20k or so,so spending 10% to help minimise moisture(or too much heat/cold)is a no brainer to me.
Sure Luke has wonderfull memories of being covered in foam insualtion dust:),but I bet he is well glad he has done it now

I remember going to a gameroom with no heating - paint had started to peel off some the backglasses. Saving a heating bill was destroying his backglasses:eek:

my cab is insulated in the roof and floor, 45mm thick walls and double glazed units.
today a heat pump / air con unit is being installed, hopefully best of both worlds with cool air now and heat in winter months, thinking of setting it to 10 deg in winter to keep items cool ?

Dude women never allow other work in the house to be totally completed,as soon as one thing is crossed off the list something is added, and the green light has terms and conditions!!!!!

How audible are the clicks and clunks from the machines outside the cabin?
I toyed with the idea of a cabin but was concerned in the summer, when the neighbours have there windows open, it would be too loud.
I'm good like that:D

Just ensure the air-filters are changed and the thing is regularly serviced.

The Mrs. used to work for a ground source heat pump installer (ISO Energy in Surrey) and had a lot of experience with these things. Thus i picked all it up by osmosis and am now a fully qualified expert. Fact.

I manage the list, it is kept locked away and I don't tell the wife what is on the list so I can never be held to it.

What I meant to say was, I need to spend money on windows and then will start clearing the area for the cabin. ;-)

Lol all I can say is your new to married life ;)

Hey Julian
The walls are 45mm thick, the walls are insulated with 50mm celotex I think it is, then plasterboarded on top of that. The floor is just the supplied floor bearers, 18mil ply and then the floor on top of that.

The roof was professionally done, cost me £1000 with membrane, under layer and then top layer. Should last 25yrs!

My garden is south facing, quite lucky, during the day in the winter the temp was 25 degrees in the day, this helped keep the cabin warm at night, I do have two of these in the cabin

They kept the cabin warm, winter this year was harsh and the cabin didn't drop below 15.
Now the temp during the day 30!

I also have a air probe in the cabin to a display in the house, image.jpg
The temp is in the house, the bottom is the cabin with lowest and highest temps of the day

hehe, John did half of the insulating fortunately, but yeah, I don't want to have to work on that stuff again any time soon (even though the garage is next on the list lol)

That Celotex pays for itself right away. All I've had to use to keep the cabin warm is a little fan heater every now and then. 50mm Celotex floor, walls and ceiling. Fantastic stuff. Going to have to use air conditioning in the summer though as it keeps all the heat from the machines in

I've done mine with 15mm SoundBloc plasterboard as I was worried about the same. Unfortunately that stuff is ridiculously heavy and so is near impossible to work work. Fortunately the Northern lights guys were a huge help getting that stuff installed.

It seems to do something, certainly better than just wood lining it inside. As it's so dense and heavy I think it really makes the cabin feel solid as well

Dave, thanks for the advice, what make was the cabin and did you use a company to put it up?

I've got to do one next year, as I've been told the pins are no longer welcome in the house.

My only 'fear' is that when they are at the bottom of the garden rather than in the lounge I'll reduce my play-time.... Or just spend all my time in my shed!

What did you experience once moving them out of the house?

Maybe try telling the person that made that statement that they are no longer welcome in the house either ;)

Poor pinball machines, don't people realise they have feelings too!

I know! I've tried to explain that they are works of 'art'! For some reason Road Show is really disliked.... ;-)

For the price you simply cannot beat Dunster House. The quality and the way it goes together. I made an thread about building mine I will look it up and post the link here.

Unfortunately I work a lot, long days sometimes and so I would come home and would turn on a machine and the misses would say "mind the neighbours,it's too late! " so would only get a game when she was out or at work.

I got the pins out of the house because we were expecting, so needed the space back for baby toys and I didn't want to come home to my boy holding a pen like in that Ikea advert only it's the side of my Big Bang his coloured in and not the sofa!. now she is more than happy to let me toddle off down to the cabin to play some pinball.

I have found that now out the house I play a bit more, pinball is a great stress release for me, kinda. Takes me away from the world and focus on that shiny speeding ball zooming about maybe it's the adrenaline of getting that multiball jackpot or a new high score'

but sometimes I can't be ****d to get off the sofa and go play. Which I'm sure some people have the same. That and playing with my boy!
