Hello,

I have been looking at Colour DMDs and I am after some opinions on LCD vs LED?

Which is best and what do most people choose? I haven’t seen many in machines and I was leaning towards LED, as it sounds more in keeping with an original DMD.

Looking for views and opinions.

Thanks!

You’ll get a 50/50 response on this.
For me - always LCD, smoother looking, a few different styles to choose from too (Dots, Dots XL, Smoothed etc)
LED is way too stark, looks poop and hurts your eyes.

I'm sure this question gets asked a couple of times a year so there may be other threads but the search doesn't work with 3 letters.
That was a good thread and most seem to be preferring LCD. The think I was concerned about was that the LCD is larger than the DMD, but I guess it’s hidden behind the speaker panel.

lcd looks best but ffs the large panel that those fcukers used is a pita when you need to open the back box as it gets in the way to do your maintenance. solution is to cut a slot in the floor of the back box and drop the display down and use the vertical adjust to bring the image up to the top of the display. nb it’s 1/4.

Not much in it. I like both but for different games. LED has better viewing angles and more dynamic colours, better blacks too.
LED suits the newer sterns. LCD in the older games.. for example Tron, TWD & GB look better with LED. I think BBH, Simpsons, Ripleys, LOTR look better with LCD. All Bally/Williams LCD. Just my opinion :-)

I'm team LED, They can be a little punchy but really do emulate the original look and feel of a DMD very well. I never liked the LCD displays as the black will never be black enough.

It's all personal opinion though, lot of people love the customisation options on the LCD display whereas I like to keep the display faithful to the original to appreciate the dots. If you don't know what you prefer maybe just get one of each and try then out for a bit, see which one you get on with the best... you can always sell the other one on here for more or less what you paid for it

Thanks for the replies, I think I am leaning on the LED side for BBH, but I will keep you posted!

For me horses for courses,
LED is more retro and suits the likes of older Ball/Will with a few exceptions like STTNG where LCD is a must. On stern again it’s personal choice but both my TSPP and FG again shine with LCD and I always use Big Dot XL.
on a side note IMO they shouldn’t even offer the abortion that is called HiRes mode! It looks like its been drawn with Daubed finger paint giving the effect of melted cheese.

this is the question that can never easily be answered and is a matter of personal taste.

I’m on scan lines for TWD and Tron, dot XL on the rest.
Put an led in a WCS I had and although very vivid just didn’t look right to me. I even swopped out led to lcd on a TAF😱
I must have sensitive eyes😊

You can turn the brightness down on the LED ones though, right?

You can yes, but at it’s lowest I still found it way too harsh. Ask for some pics maybe. I went to flip out in Croydon before buying my 1st colour DMD so I could see both types, it took me seconds to decide.
It really is personal taste but for me I hate the LED ones.

Thanks Col, if I do go LED, I will get one of these off if you.
My CV has an LED one in dude, more than welcome to check it out and fiddle with the settings to make sure you like it. I thought there were brightness controlls but couldn't remember but thinking back now I remember turning it down a LOT 😂

Yeah, I remember that on your CV and I thought it looked good.
