Well the timing couldn't really be much better. I'm just gearing up to do a full strip down on my R&B and finally fix up the back end of the cabinet.

And someone over at Pinside posts about some custom decals they've made. I think they look stunning so now i'm really tempted to take the plunge and grab a set.

Thoughts people?

Of course my immediate quandry is the 'keeping it authentic' vs 'making it look stunning' argument. I know the black version of the cabinet was a limited run so i'm a little loathe to cover the artwork at all - but given this is a keeper for me and I have no plans to move it on then I do wonder if that's really any argument at all.

Hmmm, what to do.....

I like them.

I've been in touch with the guy and he's already had enquiries from a few European people asking for black versions. He's going to look into it and let me know.

I need to get saving though. These ain't cheap - i'm looking at over £200 plus shipping. Ouch!!

The guy on Pinside has also done a black set as requested. Now i'm really torn. Do I stick with the originals or use my cab refurb as a chance to chance it. Personally I prefer the lighter feeling of the first set. I'm not quite sure why they made black cabinets?

Go blue! But to add to the cost, if you do get the lockdown, rails and legs powder coated to match :D

Did they share the artwork ? If they did, surely you could get a better deal than 200£ printing over here. I thought the cab was a navy blue.

Couldn't play this game under influence. Even though it's a trippy looking game and it should've gone down well, just needed to get away from it.

I could live with the red legs and armour for now - I can always change that out at a later date.

The blue ones would make the cab respray easier too as I could just spray the full interior in a nice sky blue. Make it looks nice and pristine and also easier to see any dropped screws in there. Hmmmm, tempting.

That plan gets my vote. I think the blue looks light and refreshing - I much prefer to the originals. I think black decal cabs can look a bit gloomy, like the black version of PinBot. And extending the same sky blue inside will be a nice touch.

If you are planning to keep it (or even if your not) do whatever you think looks best. It's you machine if you want to cut it into pieces do it (don't)

If you are keeping it it doesn't matter if anything you do affects the price as it's going no where..

If it makes you happy go for it, even if you eventually do sell it you will have gotten your enjoyment from it.

I have a black one but I think the blue looks good, maybe because it's different.

mine is black, but I'd definitely go for the blue if I was going to re-decal it.

whi says black is rare, seem to be as common as a common thing around here!

Well IPDB doesn't explicitely say they're rare, but just that some black cabinets were made and shipped to France, USA and Canada.

So make of that what you will I guess.

The red legs and side rails on mine won't look too out of place on the blue decals but longer term i'd want to get it changed over to something more in keeping with the rest of the artwork.

Now to sweet-talk the missus and tell her what i'd like as a gift for my impending 40th (yes, I just know she's going to think i've got nuts when I say I want some 'giant stickers').

Ok, i've caved in. Set of blue decals ordered....... ;-)

Erm, of course the next question is - anyone got any clue what shade the blue is on the original R&B cabinets? Any UK suppliers as all i've found so far are in the USA....

And right on cue, Manny is offering a R&B cab with glass for sale on eBay.

You got a link for that Gaz? Can't see it here.....

Never mind. Found it now - the sunflower pictures threw me.

I'm going to stick with restoring my cab. The only bit I really need is the backglass as mine has a nasty scrape on the nose (as is common on these). Chances of getting a replacement or new one is pretty much nill so i'll most likely either touch in with glass paint or look at getting a repro made.

You can be sure of that. The lack of decent pre-produced decals was the only thing stopping me from a full cabinet strip and rebuild. Now that these are available i'll be doing a full proper job on it.

Already a little apprehensive of the task but as they say up here 'it'll be reet'. ;-)

You mean the colour-matched paint from Pinball Universe right? I'm after the DESW blue so could join in for a group buy to cut shipping cost - it's the same shipping price for up to 6 bottles, I'm sure a few other community members would be in on that.

Yup, that's the one I found.

I have no idea how much 1 ounce of paint is - and I have no clue how you apply it in this format?

But yeah, if it comes to the point that it's the only option then i'd certainly be interested in a group buy. I wasn't sure if there was a car paint which might be a near perfect match (as seemed to be the case with WH2O.) ;)

I have a feeling that 1 oz is a tiny amount and they will only ship larger quantities via ground which could well rule them out from shipping overseas. I guess worst case I could take 1oz of the blue and then try to get a colour match done locally in the UK.

1 US gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 ounces

Therefore 1 US fluid ounce is just sort of 30ml (29.5735295625 to be precise!). In other words, a tiny touch-up bottle! About the same amount you'd fit in a little dropper bottle like this:

Definitely not enough to paint a whole cabinet! You'd need more like a pint or a quart.

But I think you'd only need such an exacting paint match if you were touching up original artwork, but if there was any fading (and let's face it almost all pins are old enough to be faded) then even an OEM paint wouldn't match! If you're touching up existing artwork the only way to go it to mix and match. Even the same colour mixed to match one area might not match elsewhere.

But if you're going to respray/paint the whole cabinet inside and out then get a match made when your new decal arrives. If you paint the cabinet with the correct OEM colour there's no guarantee the decal will match it anyway.

Good point Peter.

The new decals don't match entirely with the original anyway so I can't see the colour match being 100% accurate. First job is to get the decals here and then I can start worrying about preparing the cab. Really don't want to start stripping it all down now if the decals aren't going to be here for a few more weeks yet.

It's all so easy to get carried away... I got burnt not long after I got PARAGON and ordered repro drop-targets, bumper caps and apron decal from Classic Arcades Inc. Cost me an arm and a leg after import tax and Royal Mail fees, and they're a bit second-rate after seeing the drop-targets @Gaz Shiells got from Marcos. The apron decal is just terrible...

But I'm a fine one to talk after our combined earth braid order! Probably won't get around to fitting that for another year...

Doug says he's hoping to get the decals ran off in a couple of weeks - he just wants to give people a chance to get their orders in because the more copies he has done at once the cheaper it works out.

So i'd hope the decals will be here sometime early in August and i'd like to be looking at doing the cabinet strip and rebuild by the end of the month before the weather starts turning to crap again.
