As a Belfast family , Higgins was a god in our snooker loving household in the 80s
Of course Higgins had his demons but we loved him , My family knew of him . Came from the same part of town. He was born 2 years after my Dad , and died 2 years after him . They were both 61 . Too young
I remember watching a match against his nemesis Steve Davis with the sound down because my Dad couldn’t stand to listen to the commentators raving on about how great the Ginger Magican was
By a twist of fate I now sometimes see Davis on the Brighton grass roots music scene - he’s a DJ , enjoys dance / garage / psychedelic music . Who saw that coming . Chatted to him a couple of times, lovely guy and I forgive him for being a boring bastard snooker machine .
80s snooker scene was awesome - the Taylor Davis final of course lives in forever in my memory . So many characters … Jimmy, Kirk Stevens , Dracula Reardon , Big Bill, Tony Knowles etc
Those early Mosconi cup games were funny. The Americans took it deadly seriously but we’d just send a few snooker players to get ****ed up and mess about.
Jimmy certainly enjoyed quite a lot of the White back in the day!
