Energy prices - gone nuts.

I looked into getting the meter checked. Apparently if it turns out to not be faulty you have to pay the full cost of all the testing which can take a week or more...whatever that cost may be.
I think they are supposed to do checks at a maximum time of 10 years, my meter (digital) has been there for 20 years now but was checked.
Not interested in a smart meter, I would even pay not to have one.

Would appreciate some thoughts on our current situation?
7 months ago we moved in to a new build it has been a ball ache to even get British gas to acknowledge that they are our supplier for electricity (default supplier, I understand that we could change supplier)
Today I finally made some progress by using their online chat service.
They gave us thr option of two fixed tariffs (both were around £80 a month - there are only two of us living here) - they said that rate would be fixed for the length of our contract (the duration would be for i think until December 2023).
The other option was a variable rate of around £55 pcm. They said we could switch to a fixed rate at any time.
Are we right to stay on the standard variable rate until the process cap changes and make a decision then as ro if we switch to a variable rate? (Or to another provider)
The fixed you're being offered is quite a chunk more than the variable (which is going to increase significantly from 1st Apr). There is some good advice here, point 2 in particular is your scenario

You need to find out what the price per kWh is on each one, what you pay each month isn’t relevant as with one tariff they could have you building up a massive credit, with the other a negative balance. It’s part of their confuse and abuse game…..
I would assume both of those monthly payments would be based on the same estimated usage, either the amount given or based on the national average.

Working from home is stinging my gas as it’s always on now Lolol plus don’t want the pins getting cold poor baby’s
Get your self a Honeywell EVO system. i have one, only heat the rooms i am using, i can just heat the bathroom when i need it :) Works great on my Iphone too. Probably paid for itself already since i installed it about 7 years or so ago. Pay back even quicker now that energy costs have pretty much doubled over the last few years. https://www.jtmplumbing.co.uk/centr...c436/honeywell-home-evohome-smart-system-c417.

Fixed price deal coming to an end in a couple of months time (end of April) - currently looking at a 210% increase if I renew with them today, I can swap providers for a 197% increase, potential saving of £250 a year. 🤮

I'm going to be consolidating the rack of servers in my attic from 4 down to 1 and a NAS I think
Too expensive to run that lot anymore

3xDl360 G8s and a R230 might drink a bit more than that, that's not counting the 2 switches and 3 Aruba IAPs.

Will retire the 360s, beef up the R230 and move the storage on to a NAS I think.

Probably keep one of the 360s around for work stuff but only use it ad hoc.

I already have a smart heating system like the Honeywell one. That did reduce my costs without impacting how warm my wife thought the house was.
Rooms she passed through were regulated but not warm. Where you sit for a while were warmer. Rooms were much lower if not used.
The dinning room is always comfy for meals and little at other times.

Easy to fit and expand on any warm radiator system where you can replace the TRV’s. These are smart enough to call the boiler to heat when they need it.

If I were the opposition in parliament I'd be all over this.

Never mind a knee's up at No10. Getting hold of this problem will be a vote winner.

What in God's name are you running at home? 😂

My wife killed off my servers a long time ago. I just use Azure now along with a local NAS for Plex.

Forget the price of pinball machines - Wont be able to afford to run them soon!!
Actually I think the solution is to play more pinball! Always end up taking my jumper off at home if I play a while, cost of running 1 machine must be cheaper than having the heating on!

LED or incandescent? 😆 Seriously though I wonder what the energy use is VS. one or the other.

The council tax rebate is a little frustrating as I know folks who have a far larger income, fancy cars but their house has a lower bracket.
I bought my house a near ruin. Water coming through the ceiling, years of neglect, large investment sucking up my funds.
It was worth a lot less than other properties but has a far higher council tax band because of a perception back in 1991. I did ask for a revaluation but was flatly refused because they have a plan showing we have a tennis court. Which the property hasn’t had since 1973 when the land was sold off.
Still, £150 isn’t going to help a 50% rise in prices.

Just seen for some reason my house is in e when the semi we’re attached to, and the next 6 houses on both sides are D.

I’ve submitted a request for revaluation but it’s more likely they’ll raise my neighbours I think!

I’ve often wondered how they justify the best part of £2500 a year for a small semi.

A friend works re-evaluations and they are more likely to raise others bands unless yours is really obviously wrong such as a subdivision of a property where one kept the original address and the band for the full property.

Oops I might not be very popular in my street then.

Ours is the only property to have sold in the last 15 years so that might explain the discrepancy.

It's the energy companies I feel sorry for.
I mean, poor old Shell only making £12,000,000,000 profit. Poor f*****s, how on earth will they manage?

Let me tell you a little ****ing story about those twats. When I moved into this house the previous owners were with Shell ****fest Energy. The first I knew about this was when I had bailiffs threatening me about 6 weeks after moving in. So anyway I paid them immediately. Obviously I wasn't happy with this type of greeting for new customers and straight away changed suppliers. Anyway, so about 6 months later I get another firm of bailiffs after me! I'm like WTF?!? I already paid Shell Energy £1500 for 8 weeks supply....and they still want another £350??? So I'm on the website chat agent thing all morning and I'm telling them they've obviously made a mistake and how can I have possibly used this much energy in such a short space of time?! And they're telling me there's no mistake. So we agree to disagree. Next day I get a call from the head of department, ooopsy daisy, it seems they created TWO accounts for me. One in my name and one for The Home Owner. So I've been paying double and actually after all these bailiffs THEY OWE ME MONEY. *sigh*
