eBay is Free

Is ebay free?? Thought they charged (an arm and a leg) listing fee, selling fee, payment fee, pick nose fee etc etc.
Always felt if you bought from here, sell on here. And if you bought on elsewhere, then at least try and sell on here.
Plus I always feel those machines on ebay have a hidden history...

I'd go through Paypal F&F as my account is linked to a credit card with its own protection.
Dan - I would check on this. I paid for something (only £200) and paid with a CC via friends and family. The item was not sent. I got no luck claiming money back via credit card.

Do yourself a favour. Call you CC company to make 100% sure.

10 notes on here is a bargain, machine will stop in the community, more than likely, no one will get ripped off and no twats to deal with like on the bay.

Guys,

Just a thought, but it is free to list on eBay and try your luck as a seller, why would sellers pay £10 to take a chance here?

To my mind, it would be better to charge £5 or less to enable people to post anywhere else where they may tap the wealth of knowldege this forum offers. Must admit, I am sure you all know the background stats better than me, but they seems a lack of games for sale here and there are 93 on eBay with a start price over £1,000.
Hey thats ok Marcel - If the forum gets no donations then it'll just disappear. Simple as.
I personally bankrolled the forum for a good 6-7 years, however cant afford to do that any more - as the forum gets bigger then the costs increase.

Or i just plaster it with Ads to pay the bills.

and Ebay isnt free.

When selling your pride and joy would you risk it on eBay !!

I have only been a member here for a year and have bought 3 pins and sold one, I also talk to every member I purchased from and sold too. For me that’s worth every penny!

Great site and I’ll continue to donate every year and every time I sell!!

Currently 12.8% for the first £2500 then 3% thereafter so a £7000 pin, for example, would cost £455 in final selling fees but I think most are savvy enough to wait for the £1 max selling fee offers on the high ticket items.

What pee's me off is those that list on eBay then insist on bank transfer rather than Paypal so you have zero protection.
i thought the fees were capped at 10% up to 2500 ( so max fee 250) or has it all changed again

Ebay isn't free.... unless you are on a no fee deal selling a pin on there is going to cost you a few hundred in fees.

This place is not primarily a buying and selling platform, it's a community... where you can buy or sell. Communities dont run on thin air - don't know the details but I assume @Paul is either paying a hosting company or for rackspace and hardware

£10 a year is a bargain.

In the past I've listed on here and had no takers and then put it in eBay where it sold. I still donated here even though the sale was elsewhere simply because this was the platform that led to the purchase and sale of the machine in the first place.
There are a few cons compared to eBay selling here, the main one IMO being thread derailment due to opinions of the theme or that a certain individual doesn't like your game but the pros outway the cons IMO.

I knew this would cause uproar, I am sorry for that.

Paul, I have upmost respect for this forum, it is a wonderful place. I admit I am an infrequent poster and infrequent visitor as you may notice, yet despite that I donated because I like the forum that you have created.
(if indeed it was you, no offence intended but I do not know the inside workings).

I understand why folk defend this contribution structure ardently because fundamentally it is a fair price to pay for the benefit we are receiving. The moderators deserve compensation for their work and the forum does have a good value to myself and to many others, that is without question. Nor is it my point!

I posted not because I wanted to save £10, but because I thought that the charge that specifically relating to Buy/Sell/Want seems counterintuitive to the market place of the web. My original post was quite clear that it is free for people to "chance it" on ebay. It WAS NOT an attack on this forum.

Being free on eBay means they can have a shot at jackpot for nothing, you can understand why it happens can't you. In fact I know a few of you have done!

Yes if it was free to post in the Buy/Sell/Want threads here, people could "chance it" listing an item here too BUT unlike eBay, you guys would most likely rip them a new one, so the £10 isn't the driver here, just a deterrent from those aiming for Jackpot.
And so, the £10 is not stopping that particular trait is it, more likely it is just limiting the number of adverts on pinballinfo imo.

The driver in my posting here is the opportunity to bring realism to the market. Perhaps I am wrong in my opinion, I don't know.

ps, I also believe all For Sale adverts MUST be accompanied by pictures and price. The below is an insult and a fishing excercise, not only should it be closed but deleted.

I think if you can’t take the heat or just do not want to deal with ‘passionate’ people on your for sale thread then a simple “ please no negative or any comments” on for sale post.
Failure to respect gets a slap on the wrist maybe, like/dislike emojis allowed though😂

As well as help to keep the forum going I think the £10 fee was also to keep scammers away as there were a few dodgy sales here before I believe, not seen any since the introduction of this.

I sold a machine on ebay about 10 years ago.
Avoiding the experience I had for £10 would have been a bargain.

The first buyer kept saying that they were coming to 'collect at the weekend'. This went on for a few weeks and then they even emailed me to see how big there car would need to be! I eventually had to cancel and relist.
All went well on the second sale, but as others have said the ebay+paypal fees can be significant, not to mention scams with the buyer saying they never got the item.

I bought a machine through ebay in about 2008. At the time it seemed like they would be up for auction with a ridiculous starting bid, attract no bids, and you could then negotiate with the seller for a cash sale. So ebay seemed to mostly be used for free ads, but also not a good experience.

Since joining I've bought 2 machines through the forum. A far better and less risky feeling experience. I can't see how a £10 fee would cause people to sell elsewhere.

I can see why some sellers get a bit of aggro when selling in the forum. Some of it looks to fair game, but in other cases I can see that it'll encourage underground trading between prior contacts.

The £10 Minimum site supporter payment is a donation to the forum for the upkeep. The admins and Moderators are unpaid, and do it for the "love of it".... (Debatable at times!).

As it happens, it made sense to allow only those users to be able to benefit by letting them be able to sell/buy/trade. It also give us SOMETHING to be able to go back to the police with should there be any issues (Thankfully not a common occurance, however it has happened before). It can be linked back to a paypal, which then leaves a paper trail back to the individual. Something that wasnt there before. Never yet been used, but there if needed.

All in all I'm not (and have never ever been) in this to make any money - if i am honest - it wouldnt anyhow. It's just something to cover the fees for the site, which all in roll in at well over £2k a year. Hosting fees, Addon fees (and renewal fees). The money is spent frugally and where needed. And a little for future ideas/projects.

The whole idea of the site was to have a safe place where the community could came and discuss pinball stuff. It allows users to post pictures in thread and document their work.

I'm curently working on a machine database. This would have basic into about a machine... and allow users to Rate it - Something that Pinside has had for ages, however until now we havent had any way of having a "league table" for uk Pins. It will also allow reviews for machines.

As you can imagine, it takes a while to be able to build, so i'm filling in a bunch a day... Still a couple of months off being complete. This will also tie in with the shortcuts when an abbreviation is used on the forum (Example - TZ -> Twilight Zone).

All work in progress. All part of the site. Looking to add some more functinality... stay tuned!!!

that's pretty cool, maybe a future feature it could link to any wanted or for sale ads connected with that machine (even past listings, so you can get an idea of prices)

Not sure if it will work, however in theory it should since it uses tagging - So if people tag their sales threads then it should pull them all together....

Not sure about past threads - however i'm sure after a little manual work...

All machines in the Database are being tagged with the Manufacturer and the Game name....

Fair enough Paul, I shall wind my neck in. You have crated a wonderful space for the pinball community which I do appreciate btw, so thank you for that and putting up with the likes of me creating issues where there shouldn't be any:)

Marcel,

No need to. I'm no specialist - just wanted to create somewhere better and more versatile for the UK community. The US pinballers have a massive community in Pinside. Whilst the UK community is a lot smaller, i believe we should be working towards what is good for us. Nowhere near what is needed yet, however getting there!

And this is a place of open discussion (unless it's topics outlawed in the T&C's) !
