Recently diversified my home arcade and got a dance pad. Great fun for all the family and quite a workout too!

The one I have is a StepManiaX stage which is designed for arcade use (got a used HUO one):

However most people get these L-TEK pads for home use:

The nice thing about running the game on your PC (beyond saving space) is that you can find many of your favourite tracks online, so it's not just obscure japanese/korean music on there.

Toyed with the idea of getting one of these before (for the kids honest) are there any you can use with the xbox or is it all PC custom software stuff?

Googling for "stepmania xbox", I don't think there are any Xbox versions out there. Edit: seems like there are xbox releases - see below. DDR does have PS2 (and PS3) releases but that'll be limited to the song list on that disc. I have found that playing familiar songs is waaay more enjoyable!

You don't need a good PC to run this game btw, any old potato will do. Even a RPi :)

I bought two metal dance mats about 19 years ago for the kids. Absolutely knackering. I’d be scared to go on it now.

There’s loads of X Box and Wii DDR games but the music is probably all 10+ years old now. Dirt cheap to pick it up though.

RPI sounds interesting, something that could plug into the telly and packed away easily would be ideal.

Yeah there is a risk of injury for sure, especially at the higher difficulties. I've been sweating buckets doing longer sessions, it's an excellent fitness device 😎

What model are your pads - any pics?

I had this for nearly 20 yrs, sold it last year, fun for the kids. still got 2 internal pc's to run it, one bnib, plus some of the game cd's

Very nice! Seems like PIU is where it's at for the players these days. My pad came with a 5-panel conversion kit for running pump, will be giving it a go at some point!

My friend Toby was selling his SMX pads a few weeks ago, I wonder if you got the same one as there aren't too many stages over here (He was also trying to flog it for ages, pretty sure it included the 5 panel kit too)

Used to have an ltek when lockdown kicked in and couldn't visit the arcade but when those ended I sold it and went back to visiting arcades on the regular. I'm fortunate that by me the local arcade has cabinets in reasonable condition and there's a mini community that tries to meetup every month or so. Haven't played as much recently due to some muscle issue in my lower back but it's been my main workout source for years.
