hmm, well Tim. No matter what happens I'm going to keep my CGC made Medieval Madness and in 25 years I'm going to find you and kill you - oh sorry wrong show, I'm going to find you and have you play this game and admit that you were wrong! :D :D :D

and - no, because it has a series of back up LEDs, I've yet to see anyone have to replace that board. I'm sure some have but I doubt its for LEDs. And remember the LEDs are on your 25 year old clapped-out MM on the CPU board!!

Read this thread here:

Three years and a handful of mechanical fixes (pretty much all of which would apply to an original MM)

Sold for $6200. Total earnings over $17k. Total plays 26,219.

What a great run. So after 3 years the game profited about $6700 - probably had $500 in parts. Quite a few hours in labor.

$6700 ÷ 36 months comes out to about $172 a month. Our business has 2 owners at 50/50 split so it looks like we made about $86 a month each on average

Super happy with everything. Game was a tank and heald up great. Playfield still looks like newish!

Aren’t the light boards self adjusting? So if one LED fails two others increase in brightness to compensate. I seem to remember something along these lines.

When MMr first came out there were lots of people confidently predicting the big board would fail within a year. Guess they’ve been around for 5 years or so now. I’ve had issues with the sound (which I think is related to the colour chip getting shaken loose) and mechanical issues with the trolls but everything else has worked smoothly.

I’ve had far more issues with other games.

Worth watching that whole video; I'm liking that they have re-engineered the code so its all native now.

Sorry Neil you're wrong.

I think you're singing from a different hymm sheet and conflating the operator vs collector argument.

I agree as an operator there is no contest. They doubled their money and the game was low maintainance. It's done its job. And then they could sell it and get another 50%!

We're collectors. So we're not looking for reliability inside a warrantied period, we're looking for servicability forever.

The fact that they have built-in LED redundancy is the smoking gun. Nasa used 2 o-rings in their SRBs didn't they? Because there was a reasonable probability that one might fail during a critical period. Same thing here except the critical period is the warranty term of an expensive toy.

The point is that it's designed for purpose and all while minimising build costs.

No way in this world that the remake is going to last 25 years without needing a service. Same with an original. The difference is I just swap out a lamp or transistor, you have to hope the boards are still being fabbed or you pay for a comparibly costly SMT repair.

That's not to say the remakes are a trash design, far from it, just you have to be realistic with part life cycle compared to the 'Defenders' 🛻 of the pinball world.

You mean the red LEDs? They're old school Gaas technology and will probably outlive all the other components. The white super brights are completely different tech, high current, and are prone to failure inside a few years. Torches, kitchen lights, traffic lights, signage, pinball..

Well Tim - I now have it in my calendar for the next 25 years to post about how well my MMR is working.

And I’ve just emailed my solicitor to update my will and give *you* my MMR as I expect this machine to outlive me! The wife and my daughter Jade also know that this game goes to you.

What else do you have that I can criticise and be bequeathed? Grr, that Monster Bash, that'll never last...

Haha ok, well anyway at least you've chosen a reliable stalwart for stallball... ;-)

Sorry if this has been covered but I've been looking at the remakes quite closely recently whilst trying to choose between them and Godzilla.

As I understand it each light comprises of three LEDS which are not used simultaneously. If one LED fails one of the backups is used instead.

I don't have a dog in this fight because I've gone with Godzilla but that was certainly a feature when I read up on MM & MB.

Godzilla has the same design, see the issue Sooom had with Star Trek and Light boards - but I wouldn’t bet my life on a Stern Spike 2 or JJP game lasting twenty years.

CGC on the other hand know what they are doing you can feel it in the build quality of the games, they haven’t cheaped out but they have built for efficiency - that large board saves loads of farting about at build time which of all the costs a pinball machine has the biggest are the people manufacturing them.

Cheers
Neil.

And I had to tinker with it for ages to make sure it survives!

The only downside of the CGC games at the moment is no Scorbit support.

Everything goes wrong eventually, if you can afford an original or a remake buying spares shouldn’t be a problem.

Im guessing spares will be available for a long time just like they are for WPC etc

As for PC’s in JJP I’m not so sure, glad I got rid of mine! Something will be available but what a load of grief.

Now I must get back to replacing the 32 year old rotten timber sills on 5 big patio doors, now that’s a ball ache!!!!

On that image there are about 20 boards. There is a large board in the middle but its 100% NOT one board. But what do I know I've only owned it for 5 years _without_ a single fault. Not one. Not even a fuse.
