I have always fitted the latest rom set to all my games. But having read @Carl Spiby recommendation for HS2 that L-2 gave the best gameplay I gave it a try ..... And yes it surely does.
Is there any other games where the latest roms are not always the best?

I can vouch for the fact that on Gilligan's Island (which for me was the game that started the software update race) it's wise to have the final edition - I think it's L-6. Using an earlier edition resulted in a written-off driver board, which Deith Leisure exchanged under warranty.

I tried L-5 for Space Station, instead of L-2. All seemed fine, until I reached the initial-entering routine. Something went wrong during the flashbulb show for this, and the solenoid extender dropped out, so that coils (on the 'A' side of drive circuits) were operating instead of flashbulbs (on the 'C'' side), until the relevant fuses blew. The L-5 chips went back into the spare parts drawer.

Correct, L2 is kind of considered better as it has the "Run the red light" sequence which was removed later.

Unfortunately L2 and L5 have loads of bugs in them (I started making a list) one day I am going to re-write the code for this game and fix them all

I prefer the early roms on most WMS games.
I'm running L2 in my Whitewater, hate a ball save on a machine that wasn't designed to have one.

Run the LH6 home ROM ...or whatever it was called ...and switch off the ball save. Get all the other cool benefits then - proper bonus scoring, better lightshows , other tweaks etc

Thanks for your response to rom experiences and preferences so far.
With Home Roms, do any come with any special recommendation?

Its encouraging to see the progress made in the new roms for Data East Star Wars,Tales from The Crypt and @myPinballs Indiana Jones. I look forward to the days when you dont have to change the cabinet and playfield to get a "new" game when you may keep the game subject but perhaps alter the story, music, display and light show through the roms....... or.... is this just wishful thinking.?
The Pinsound system is something I think I'll need soon.

Yes Luke, Nice one. I have plenty of code at your disposal to get you started to, so don't wait too long :) Getaway could be so much more... :D

There is lots going on in the 'rewrite arena' these days. Its a great way to breath new life into old games. I just wish PPS would see the light and stop being such 'dicks' about everything. Embrace it, don't crush it!

I just had a look again at all the tweaks. Seriously don't know why you wouldn't want to be running this code @replicas :hmm: ??...so many bugs fixes. And like I said the Ball Save is optional.
Never really noticed anything that stood out bug wise on L2 rom but I didn't realise that you could disable the ball save on LH6 (which I have had in a early machine that I sold). Will have to give it another try without the ball save and see if I can notic the difference.
