hi everyone any advice is much appreciated, just before I call in a visit form a tech guy my Baywatch I bought off here a little while ago has been great but the screen has recently started flickering on and off which I know prob needs that 5volt kit but just before the kids party last weekend ( arrrgghh lol ) the thing stopped altogether. When you switch the power on your here the usual power / speaker type noise , then the Baywatch will be right back but no lights at all or screen, zero, I noticed when I open the coin door all the gi comes back on bt still no screen?

forgot to mention ive re-sitted pretty much every connection on the boards

These super size DMD machines runs off the 12 volts from one of the rectifiers at the left side of the backbox check that and the fuse as it provides the supply to the DMD which is then stepped up on the display to the 110v or whatever it is. also a standard pc power supply will run the dmd and plugs straight to it (same plugs) for testing.

Look at the Red and Black power connector to the DMD board, re-seat it a few times, then trace it back to the PSU and re-seat it a few times on the psu and see if it comes back to life.

If it doesn't then you'll need a meter and measure the PSU voltages or get your fix-it guy in.

Thanks very much, I've already tried that Moonraker with no joy although I have not metered yet. I'll look I to that Ronnie63 :)

the thing stopped altogether. ?[/QUOTE said:
If I'm reading this right, you mean the machine has stopped working altogether? The fact that the gi is off probably means that the non working display is saying "open coin door" meaning the batteries are gone, and back to factory settings. Once you've got the machine back into a playable state, then you can address the display. I've had many successes fixing these by replacing the long ribbon cable from cpu to dmd driver.

Yeah exactly right, hope so I've got some time to have a look this morning so will give these things a try, thanks very much!

I you've been moving the pin. Check all the eproms are firmly in place.. On one of my pins I thought I had a LED trough problem, kept ejecting all the balls on startup. Turned out to be one of the roms had lifted slightly when I moved it. Simple fix in the end :-)

sell it to me lol

been through 3 of these to find this one condition wise so may be a while but ill give you first refusal if I ever let go

thanks Kenny I tried that after lifing and re sitting all the connectors on the boards :(

I managed to repair one that was blowing fuses (Maverick) there is a lot goes on with the power on the back of the DMD regulators etc, I think you need to find out if the DMD is good or the driver board?

If I remember right you can power it on the bench with a pc psu and it should show the firmware etc as it has it's own cpu? but it was a few years ago I could be dreaming!

Hi,
i would like to up this thread as I have an issue, quite similar.
when I start a game the dmd (pin2dmd) writes « open the coin door ». I do and I can start the game after added some credit.
then the game goes on until happens some dmd failures, dmd finished to freeze on a screen or white. The game still goes on, just dmd lost.
i controled the board behind the dmd and I get 4,8v
anyone have any suggestions.
as it is my first sega, can someone tell me how I launch tests?
thanks

Fairly well known issue with Sega games. Try re-seating the power cable (PSU to DMD PCB) at both ends a few times to clean the connector and pins.

I think i got 2 distinct issue.
- dmd reads « open the coin door »: it is reported in the manual (if someone gets an original for sale, contact me) that is a faulty memory condition in RAM. Then check battery voltage at CMOS RAM with power of.
- DMD i loose during the game, erratic behaviour and then it freezes. maybe I need to clean connectors with a contact spray and/or change ribbon cable
took some pics, if you see something anormal, please let me know
thanks

Edit:when I start a game I have special lit in the right outline and the lite shark flip insert lit too in the left inlane. is it normal?
and only 2 red leds lit fix during the game.normal?

Right - thats a new DMD - try an external PSU first. Run the DMD seperately. Prob taking too much juice off the 5v and crashing it.

The 5v rebuild doesnt really apply to these!

Well I need to know how to install this screen . Can’t find a notice of how to install in a pin.

Ok here are some pics.
pin2dmd board and all displays are all linked to the white domino. It is powered by the mini board (i guess giving the 5v) on the side with orange and grey wires that are directly soldered to CN6 (12v) in the back!
i will try my external PSU. Just wanna know how I power it? From power in the cabinet? Thanks

Those voltage convertors are rubbish.

Put in a 5v PSU 5A in the base of the cab off the 240v transformer primary. Then run a 2 core 1mm cable to the backbox to the display.

I have a PSU external but for a test, can I plug it to the wall power? if it works, I would buy one for this game. i would like not to tinker the plug of my external PSU

For testing - run an external power supply off a normal wall socket. Isolate the display PSU from the machine. Get rid of that board on the left and feed pin2dmd with 5v at least 2.5amp

This is exactly what I was thinking. get rid of this ****, removed solderings on CN6. For the test I connect from my external PSU directly to the white domino. Then I will know.
thanks to all.

So i powered dmd on external PSU (plugged on wall) and removed the internal one.
i powered first the dmd and it is fine, then the game and the screen seems to be still frozen, can’t see if the picture I see is in relation with the game. (I think as I recognize sonic and sega logo)
do I need to plug the external PSU on the game? Any thoughts?
thanks
edit: it seems that the issue of « open coin door » has disappeared, of course I couldn’t read the screen as I said previously but I could have started a game without adding credits and then opening the door.

How do I plug it in the power box of the game? My guess is to take between the switch and the filter, black and white wires. Correct?
