Since I’ve had this over 3 weeks now I’d thought I’d share my thoughts for anyone that was interested.
The novelty has yet to wear off ; it’s an absolute joy to play as far as I’m concerned.
Although I wasn’t convinced straight away, I’ve really come to appreciate the playfield design - despite it only having one interactive toy ( the Arrival helicopter ball lock complete with spinning rotors) , I don't think it needs any more as the current design creates a nice flow which could otherwise be interrupted. The rules are refreshingly easy to grasp, offering you different paths through the game, and give the impression the final wizard mode is not too far out of reach, which I personally really appreciate
I might be biased (I am biased) but the medallion challenge modes manage to completely change the feel of the game by altering the gi lighting, insert signage and ambient sound. It’s like you drop into another game entirely and then pop back out into the world of Abba pop. The merging of the modern Voyage show and the classic Abba music with associated videos is quite an achievement.
I find the sound continues to impress ; there are some truly satisfying effects accompanying shots that make great use of the stereo as well as being so sharp to the point you can feel them in your teeth. And then there’s the very respectful use of the Abba song assets where certain parts have been isolated and slowed down or speeded up and put to great effect in song modes such as Money Money Money and SOS .
I think the animations are also done in a kind of understated, playful yet respectful fashion to match the music and don't take themselves too seriously. I see several examples of subtle humour which I love, like the old style UK telephone being thrown down at the end of the Ring Ring song mode. Having seen the Voyage show in London, I was blown away to find the Abba arena in London rendered both inside and outside - it’s put to good effect in the Voyage multiball set to the track ‘On and on and on'
I also love the way it’s loaded with 19 songs and associated promo videos, any one of which you can choose before a ball to be played immediately and, assuming you don't drain, in their entirety.
Since the game was announced , I’ve got to know several of the guys at Pinball Brothers and have had many conversations with them. I’ve found them to be very receptive to feed back, genuinely wanting to improve the game where they can.
I can’t begin to imagine how hard it was to satisfy the Abba licence, but to my mind they’ve created a wonderful game.
I assume the clip of Benny from Abba playing it on the official Abba website last week was quite a moment for anyone who was involved in this endeavour.
