180/200 gram vinyl..... is it 'that' good? And other discussions about vinyl records....

Don't get loudspeakers, get monitors like Mackie HR824's they are more than low enough.

Vinyl won't sound that great though, good enough of course but all that noise that comes with playing vinyl will be more pronounced.

Quite a lot of the time I have to low cut, sometimes late at night or even during the day because I like to remove some of the low end rumble you don't hear.

Dave - seriously why use monitors for hifi? The are uncoloured speakers used to monitor whilst recording. I would not use monitors for hifi - or use hifi speakers as monitors.
Already own 3 pairs of great monitors. Yamahas, KRKs and Adam audio.
Part of my living is musician and sound engineer, monitors are not really made for that job.
Plus I do not want active speakers. I have a valve amp that I really do like the sound from.
To me vinyl does sound great. I do prefer the bottom end.

Yep, have to agree. Not getting into an argument over what is better than whatever else, though.

I'm no audiophile, the whole vinyl experience is far more than that for me, the hunt, the artwork, the physical interaction with the media, etc.

Plus I really like just watching the needle bob around in the groove, whilst listening.

Smart speakers and streaming services are great too from a convenience point of view.
Yeah - with you on that.
When I put on an album it is an experience.
Not a fan of streaming. The music I listen to I have owned.
Today to 99.9% of people music has no value. My friends girlfriend has just put out an album, I could of got a free copy off her - but I paid for it. It cost her a fortune to record it.

Well if any of you folks like 70s glam rock - then she is very influenced by it. Oh - and the album title. She had no idea who the Krankies were.

Was toying going to see BD at her London show this month but couldn’t get my head around the main act. Plus kind of figured I’d be 20+ years older than everyone else in the venue 😢

Monitoring is hi-fi for me whether it comes from speakers or headphones. I want to hear how it sounded from the sequencer and not coloured with plenty of 32-50hz without a need for a sub. If I have to colour any music then the mix is clearly no good.

Only time I will listen to something through the lower end is to see how a mix translates to other, like crappy headphones, TV's but you don't really need to after some practice.

All depends on the music really if you're listening to pop and rock from the olden days recorded through analogue gear then it doesn't really make any odds, you will be reaching for your Mids, Treble dials.

I thought this too, I watched a well known reggae sound system guy talking about how cd’s, mp3 etc could not match the bottom end of vinyl.
Depends on the compression. You don't need below 20hz.

Why would you need to use mid/treble dials if you are listening to records released in the 70s?

Additive, subtractive graphic EQ. Why do they put them on units if you wouldn't use them on any era of music? Silly question.

I will have to do a comparison next time we set up our 8kw PA system with some quality compressed files and decent 12” single vinyl of the same song.
Would be good to hear and feel the difference.

Are there any of the clear vinyl ones left, if so where can I get one?

MP3 isn't great on the tops, even that 20khz on a 320 you will get a fishtank sound. Just get a hi fi to mask it.

Why single out the music genre and era then?
