Currently attempting a fix on a Williams Gorgar Sound Board, it should be working but it isn't. Everything tests as if it should be working, but still no sound! (Yes I've checked the speaker and the volume control).

So I am at the stage of needing a known working board, doesn't need to be from a Gorgar but it does need to be confirmed as working.

Cheers

The Type 2 or 'square' audio board was also used in Williams video games such as Defender. It was often supplied without the speech module connecting header, though, so if outright replacement is intended check that any you're offered are equipped for speech.

I'm not sure if a tip in the manuals for later Williams games applies, but there's a check of the audio amplifier, which involves momentarily touching a terminal of the volume control with a plugged-in soldering iron. Doing so produces a clicking sound if the amplifier is okay. Check with a System 11 game manual, though.

Thanks Jay,

I've been through the schematic, swapped out CPU, PIA etc... but Leon's test ROM doesn't test ok (which makes no sense as everything I check with says the CPU is running fine). I've even check every trace on the board, not a single broken one. I've even checked the crystal is working with my scope etc...

It's not a board I've worked on before, and don't have a working one for ref, so I figured having a working one would be a very good idea before I waste more time on this.

So that is why I'm looking for a know working good board.

Checked/replaced all the IC sockets? They have caused me all sorts of issues on one of those boards.
Yep, did it at the same time as recapping it.

At the moment I've removed the Speech board, put W1 jumper in place and have both DIP switches set to off, so I should be getting something. Most I've had is a couple of pops.

It's the oddest thing, even had a friend look over it for me to see if I've missed anything.

Think someone has messed with it trying to fix it, the CPU was in upside down when I got it! I thought at that point it was going to be an easy fix!

I've tried tapping into the output of the DAC (also tried swapping that out) and just a bit of hum, so it's not the amp section.

I've upgraded the CPU to a 6802, taken out the jumper to enable the onboard RAM and removed the RAM chip. Even tried several 6802's as I thought maybe the one i had tried didn't have the onboard RAM working.

Still the same, silence. Which got me thinking it must be the ROM, so burned a whole new one (and Leon's test as well). Nothing.

I'm going to figure out why it's not working, as a learning exercise for myself. But having a working board is the only way I can see I can take this further now. Frustrated as all heck!

The MPU was also totally dead (Rottendog replacement), but I've managed to get that working, so I know my fault finding methods are solid. I've repaired many boards in the past, but this one has me at the moment!

Hi just checked, unfortunately I must have sold it sorry… sliming down my vast amount of spares over the next year so if you need anything else always try me

I've got a Robotron sound board that's not in use atm if that's any use.
I don't want to part with it (one day I will get the main board looked at..) but happy to loan you it if that's any use?

Hi, thanks for the offer.

There is a chance I could actually damage the loan board, which is why I was looking to buy one. Then if I made a mistake it's only me that looses out.

I do really appreciate the offer, but I'll keep looking for one to buy for now.

Cheers

I think that theres a spare sound board in the bits for my project firepower that, predictably, went to the store last week ahead of putting the house on the market - I should get down there later in the week & Ill have a look. It was working when I last tried it but could easily have gone bad in the five years since then :)

Yes - I did take the batteries out of everything before putting them in store.

Found this rather grubby - and out of focus - example. Im 99% sure it was working last time but thats atleast 5 years ago so could have gone bad in the meantime - dont see any obvious dead caps but have no way to test it !

Yours for £10 + postage :-)
