Which LEDs for GI and backbox?

I have a Getaway and a Shadow. I've led'd all the playfield inserts on both machines with superbrights from PH and am very happy. The Getaway came with frosted white Playfield GI and they look fine. I tried some frosted whites in the backbox and found them too spotty, clearly visible through the backglass so stayed with incandescents. The Shadow came with no LEds, I did the inserts but the frosted whites I have in my Getaway look terrible in the shadow, too spotty in the backglass and through playfield plastics. The frosted whites I have are very white, they are either cool white or the standard ones. I'm wondering whether warm white frosted will look better and less spotty. I was just going to order some to try but thought I'd ask here first.

Anyone had trouble with spotty LEDs through plastics and backglass?

I hate to think of all those extra amps going to the incandescents, through the connectors and boards.

I've kitted my Eartshaker GI out with TrueLed. Looks a treat. Keeps it looking authentic I shall be doing the same with FH when I shop it.

Thanks ronsplooter, the trueleds are a bit pricey, are the other ones as good as them?

Looks wise the warm whites that David sells are really close to the TrueLED. The build quality of the TrueLED is better but that's why they cost so much. They're probably the best engineered LED's I've seen, as you'd expect from Sir Squires :) I really rate the LEDs that David at Pinball LED sells so would definitely recommend them, his customer service is also top notch! Buy with confidence.

Send David an email as he offers a 10% discount for forum members, not sure how you claim it though as I bought off him in person at a show.

non of them. they all still strobe. even Marks' one's. if your worried about amps, change the 44's to 47's in the GI and remove every third 555 in the back box.

I'm just starting to get set up for a review of several suppliers LED offerings, however as a little test to myself I stuck some in a STTNG backbox over the weekend to see the differences. And there's a lot!! Some you dont notice any flicker at all, others flicker well (especially when GI brightness set to "2" :D). Will be interesting to see how it goes with the differences :)

However i will say that Mark S's / Pinballmania's seem to be the closest to the original, tho i note on STTNG which has a rather "dark" translight that in some cases the slightly brighter LED's do change the quality of image of the backbox :)

Look forward to your review Paul. I haven't seen any strobing on my pins. Only thing I've had is the ghosting but as new know a tweaked rom fixes that.

I'm a big fan of LEDs in pins ...

... but I always leave #47's around the flippers otherwise the strobing effect on a fast moving ball is too much.

This reminds me of the really annoying lens flare so overused in a lot of modern action movies like Star Trek and total recall, I've moaned about it to a few friends who hadn't noticed it before and now they say ' thanks for pointed that out!! ' through gritted teeth ;>). Now I'm going to notice this strobing....thanks a lot! :>0
