A question for players of all skill levels. By encouraged this means wanting to emulate who you saw play and maybe also tried to base your play/skills on. Just interested in who looked up to who.

I don’t really feel like I’m trying to emulate any particular person, all the very top players might as well be playing a different game in terms of flipper skills and ability. I’ve watched a lot of Elwin, Bowen, and of course the “kids” currently at the top. Of them all I most admire ZMac and his really calm and measured approach to play, basically where I’d want to be if I had 1% of his skill.

The player I enjoy watching the most (but would never even attempt to emulate!) is Rich, you know you’re in trouble when he traps up and puts his hand in his pocket when aiming his next shot. Theatre!

Couldn't honestly give a monkeys about other players. Just wanted to have some fun on different games.

Pretty much everyone is a better player than me and that’s fine. Watching a video etc of other people playing would bore me to tears in the same way watching someone playing would video games or run/kick a ball would.

I don’t even care for competitive play , bailed on that years ago , and didn’t really care what level these guys were actually at but at the time they just put a smile on my face and encapsulated everything about the sheer joy of pinball . Absolute legends. Total characters. Koi giving us a master class on TAF at the UK Show / EPC (2009 ????) was brilliant.

@Genotime invited me to my first tournament as well. He and @Wayne J got me involved in the league as well, a great introduction to competitive play.

I don't really try and emulate any players, but I do try and take on some of the control that players such as @roadshow16 have. Craig is very accurate, calm and composed, and I would love to add that into my game. However I'm also aware of his dedication to playing that way, and I still enjoy just playing on the fly for fun.

I firstly used to just pop in to tilt for the odd game when in Birmingham and saw a poster for a Tuesday night league for £5 and all machines are on free play. I thought that's cheap and I can play as many games as I like. Bargain. I started playing and started improving and got the bug very quickly. Now I love it.

I'm the same as you though, I would love more control and keep calm but I enjoy playing on the fly too.

Control is the only way to be consistent. There is some player based in the states which has a European sounding name which escapes me. He plays on the fly and is always moving around, first name something like Andrei or Alex. The seasoned pros will know who I mean, he is the exception to the rule.

Pinball gods these guys …. The golden age seemed such an innocent time as well as tournament play was in its infancy the games it seemed like an even playing field as most folk new the tables now the rules and endless combo bolocks and multipliers and all that stuff on new games is so dull.
Man I so wish we could go back to that pinball time , when no one asked to see photos of the back of pinball 😂

David Dutton (DAD ) - although I don’t play competitively ( because I can’t 😀) but a few years back , David was very patient with me and explained the rules and the shots to his games and I suddenly “got it “ . Up until then I stupidly just played to keep the ball in but David opened up a whole new world of fun for me
