What are the poor man's machines with MM-like rulesets?

Which machines out there would you suggest for engaging rulesets similar to Medieval Madness, i.e. plenty of modes that you have to progress through towards a wizard mode and a good helping of humour?

I've played CV, TOTAN and IJ, all of which are excellent. But are there any machines that you would say are underrated because of the storyline that you work through in the game?

Rob

Roadshow has some good modes - the idea is you work across the USA from East coast to West coast. A great wizard mode if you do it.

Any Lyman Sheats game. All similar modes. Hit this shot 3 times, then hit this shot 5 times, followed by this shot 7 times etc..

I prefer Keith Johnsons rules personally.

The Shadow is a more affordable game to answer your question though

Hmmm. Never really think of MM having modes as such - more a bunch of multiballs.

I always recommend Dirty Harry as a cracking bang for yr buck game, great ruleset with plenty of modes, multiple objectives that tie together nicely leading to some good strategy play, nice mix of flow and stop/go action, challenging wizard mode, hilarious Clint callouts (intentional or not ;))

OK, I''l play.

Batman Forever for me, especially if you've recently watched the film and can tie the modes into scenes from the film.

Wizard mode tough to reach but worth it.

Super Jackpot hard to get, especially so as you don't reach the wizard mode often enough to practice!

Stargate, awesome number of different modes and 2 or 3 or 4 ball multiballs. You can set it up so that it adds a ball in multiball if certain shots are made (ie start in 2 ball then got to 3 and then 4 balls in play). Plus some interesting extras if you get enough crystals...

I agree grizz I think that's what makes pinall great I ve played some of the top titles and walk away going meh, then you play a game with no gimmicks ,no toys not so deep rules and walk away with a big smile

People have been saying this for years ...yet every time I play a Stargate ....I just think 'meh'. Honestly I've tried but I just don't get it :confused1:

I agree with that, the flippers feel weird and don't seem to be able to make the shots.🎻

Bought a Stargate back in Jan and never really bonded with it. Some nice features such as the drop up targets but the flippers always felt a bit clunky to me. Not sure if that's a Gottleib thing. Broke my rule of keeping machines for at least a year and sold it on to make space for a new machine. (OK, it was actually 2 new machine but don't tell my wife....)

Not a bad machine by any stretch of the imagination, but glad it's now found it's way to a new owner who'll play it more.

+1 for Roadshow and Shadow. One that hasn't been mentioned that would also get my vote is Last Action Hero (not for everyone though :peep:)

Obvious and correct answer is Attack From Mars, it's just like MM, yet a more "used" example would be no more than £3k, any MM is £4500+ these days. Nothing has the comedy and fun factor of MM if that's your bag but it isn't a mode based machine, more goal orientated. If you want modes, go the Addams Family / TZ route
