Two Flipper or Three Flipper games?

Do people prefer two flipper or three flipper games? Or are people not bothered and like either?

Having had a few three flipper games (Tron, The Hobbit and Street Fighter II (technically a four flipper game, but you cannot control the forth one)), I have decided that whilst these were good games, I prefer two flipper games.

All of my current line up are two flipper games and having also played a number of the modern three flipper games (Jurassic Park, Foo Fighters and Godzilla - I assume Elwin loves three flippers!), I just find the flow and my concentration of games easier with just the two.

Thoughts? Do people only buy two flipper games or as above are people not bothered if the game is good.

And let’s not discuss the attention seeking freaks that are four flipper games!

There are good games will all manor of flipper setups but I personally prefer 3 or more. Every time a new machine is released if it only has 2 flippers my heart sinks a little. Of course it could turn out to be amazing anyway ( I have plenty of machines with only 2 BTW )

Oh and I should say, I am discounting upper playfield from this, i.e. I consider The Mandalorian as a two flipper game.

Great topic John mate.

Two flipper games for me. Foo Fighters upper flipper was very good but in the most part my favourite 4 or 5 games are al two flipper.

So far I haven’t had a 2 flipper game last long here, not sure if thats because they are 2 flippers or just a coincidence. 3 flipper games generally have better flow imo because more shots go directly to a flipper. Look at stern JP, most shots go to a flipper.

Maybe I just suck at drop catches from orbits so prefer a 3rd flipper to attempt a shot 😂

For me I have always preferred 3 flipper games over 2 flipper games.
Just adds another dimension to the game.

One of my favorite moments of a 3 flipper game has to be nailing the top ramp shot on Whirlwind during multiball.

Can’t say I have a preference but imdn I kept forgetting about the 4th flipper.
Love the left orbit onto the 3rd flipper and then delta ramp on sttng.
So maybe I am a three flipper guy

On a side note and again,as a rule of thumb, I usually really enjoy games with an upper playfield but rarely enjoy games with a submersed, lower playfield (ACDC premium/LE, Black Hole etc).

3 or more for me as it naturally moves the game away from typical fan layout, no objection to 2 flippers and have several but for variety 3 upwards can make a game very unique. However, just to contradict myself alot of 3 flipper games share a similar layout too so maybe after a while the question will be 3 vs 4 flippers?!

The more I think about it, the more I think I definitely prefer 2 flipper games, as all others have been sold, so there must have been a reason for that.

I guess I just wondered if anyone actively avoided three flipper games.

Three is the optimum number imho unless the fourth flipper/ game rules are done extremely well.

Extra flippers/ mini PFs are often gimmicks that add very little. WPT had a rare, excellent, mini pf.

The side flipper does not take much space and avoids that whole fan layout thing. It adds a new ramp/ loop/ jackpot dimension to games with a much harder, pacier shot that usually involves a moving ball.

Transporter with the ability to trap on the third flipper and be rewarded for powerful shots. Rollergames with the magnet on the third. The outrageous loop to lock on Fathom. Repeated loops on the Shadow that only top players can manage. The challenging jackpot shots on Earthshaker, Funhouse, Whirly. ... The mighty Banzai which is not a six, but a double three.

Tewilight Zone is pretty unique in that all 4 flippers work well and can achieve major points. Even the mighty TAF, the gold sovereign benchmark of games, has a pretty meaningless left side flipper.

3 flipper is my preference but not essential.
I think it adds another skill set when used with multiball jackpots and specific occasions when it’s an integral shot needed to complete or advance a mode.
I also like a fourth flipper if used well on a mini PF and the perfect example of that is Foo on the Prem/LE. It’s a kind of WOZ with more depth to it.
My current lineup consists of about 50/50 with Met, BM66, DP and BSD perfect as they were designed with 2 flippers.

Or back into the shooter lane ala Stern Star Trek and Rush for additional skill shot or away team, drum solo, extra ball etc.
Star Treks is perfectly designed, TMNT not so much. It’s a shame the one from Bond could have done with one to make the Pond scoop more reliable
