There goes my virginity

Well there goes my pf swap virginity, so here are my thoughts.

MB and TAF are regarded as the toughest so it was a baptism by fire but I'm sure all modern games are similar. The hardest part about a pf swap is getting started; it does take some mental preparation for your first one (always does

) . Won’t bother giving any tips as it’s all out there I'm sure apart from one, solder your pop bumpers before repopulating your playfield.

I did the swap my own way without doing research so there will no doubt be an easier route although at the end of the day, what has to be done..........has to be done.

Difficulty out of 10 I would say a 2

Tediousness I would say an 11 out of 10

What a long drawn out chore it was, would I do it again, yes …….in a hurry..... nope....... if you are not confident or too busy (like me) and can get someone to do a swap for £500, take it, I would not do a swap for £500, restoring a cab for £500 is an easier way to go.

Unforeseen problems, the green lagoon plastic did not fit the new pf, not even close, this had to be shaped to fit, the pop bumper core holes where too small, these had to be milled out to take the assemblies, there were some other tweaks which needed to be made to get compatibility. Some of the metal scoops were in bits, I had to weld these up along with repairing the usual hacks.

Biggest chore was probably the pops (all rebuilt with new parts) nobody likes those.

Does it work?? Don’t know yet as my cab is ½ done so maybe there is some grief on the way when it goes back in.

I've got hold of a nice spare Congo pf. I'm tempted to swap it out but not sure if the effort will out weigh the reward, it's not like my current pf is horrendous. If the cab was mint and all the plastics were good I'd be more inclined to do it but it seems pointless putting a mint pf into a scuffed cab and repopulating it with cracked plastics.

Hi Gaz, my Congo pf is pretty mullered around one edge of that big hole, let me know if you decide to part with it, saying that I don't know if the Congo is a keeper so would not do a swap on something that's heading for the door and also take on board what you say about the rest of the pf in general, mine is in the same condition so it may be wasted.

I've emailed cliffy and he intends to make protectors for the eject holes in the near future.

Got plenty of the underside of the pf
biggrin-1.png
, will bang one up when I get a min, cab is done also, will put it back together over the next couple of days, need siderails etc. The new decals (2nd generation) are not like the originals, not as vibrant or as glossy
sad-1.png
, jees if you are going to clone some decals then make them the same as the originals esp for £240 a set, had to get these from Oz, last set hence price hike.

BTW, this in not currently a mint restore, work done so far, cab restored and re-decaled (upper cab sides inside prepped ready for inner decals when I design them), playfield swapped, pops and flippers rebuilt, hacks sorted out, scoops welded, all nuts bolts polished, that's about it, all plastics are original (someone kindly sent me a couple of replacements) but a new set would be beneficial, Rogerairplane replaced the rubbers and pop bumper caps before I got the machine, all the stainless lanes need to be re-brushed, flipper bats are dull, and the rest of the pf bits are as they arrived, I replaced one ramp flap which was trashed so it's partially mint with the jobs left to do on hold until I can be bothered, all the hard work is behind me and it will be functional soon with a bit of luck, all the cab bits need a clean (fuse box cover, coin door etc) and side rails were trashed upon receipt, would benefit from a new glass etc etc.

Andy, the decals may not be as glossy but the main aim was to make them not as brittel as the originals which they managed to do. This will or course make them much more robus around the legs of the cabinet which the originals did not stand up to the task.

Keeping the new decals wrinkle-free is now your priority. there is lots of advice floating around, some good some bad.

The best tips I have found to be true are:

  • Allow at least a week for the decals to stick before attaching the legs
  • Do not to tighten the legs whilst the machine is off the ground. put the bolts in loosely, lower the machine so the legs are supporting the weight and then tighten
  • Use a felt-type protector between the leg and the cabinet

If your disappointed with the lack of gloss on the new decals, give them a going-over with Mr Sheen. This transformed my TZ and helps protect it. (God I sound like an old woman)...

Great advice,

Personally all the redecals I do are left for at least four weeks before any legs go near and that is when they have been installed dry, if you use the wet method then I would leave for six weeks before attaching the legs.

Decals went on perfect, more wrinkles on a babies forehead

great advice on leg installation delay though, I was going to get them on later but will hold back now.

Deffo a good idea to give the adhesive time to bond , did the same with the TZ inner cab decal instructions (24 hours, may extend now after the above posts), they become imposible to remove with time without getting the old sander out, saying that I fitted the pf immediately after I applied the decals with no real drama (took two of us to get it back in to avoid issues)

Just bought a new sheet of glass from Pinball Heaven. Still waiting for the courier to drop it off but its around £50 delivered.

He has a courier guy that will drop them off. I have to pay him £25 on arrival. Hopefully i will get it this week sometime.
