Jim @myPinballs must have a supplier for them for his new S&T boards. Unless he's been hoarding a huge stash of them since Texas flogged them all cheap in 1983...

In fact, you couldn't use anything else without re-writing the game ROMs. Texas Instruments did a whole series of these speech chips and only a few are pin compatible but even then they aren't function compatible, so seeing comments like "I'll just rip one out of a Speak & Spell" are garbage because they used the original TMS5100 chip.
To the best of my knowledge these were only ever made by TI. They are labelled TMS5200 when sold third-party, and CD2501E or TMC0285 when used in TI's own products.

Starting to get some quotes in from US-based suppliers...
10 x $30 each = $300
6 x $20 each = $120
Found somewhere that has at least 2 for $10 each, and possibly 4 more, but again US-based with no information about international shipping on their website. Post is always so expensive from the US. I may have to get it delivered to a friend and posted onwards.

Thanks, @pinballmania. Understand the price given the rarity and condition. I'm in no super-rush as this is for a surplus S&T board that needs repair elsewhere first. Once I've got it going with a chip from another S&T I'll hunt one down. At least I know you've got them! Only other place seems to be Big Daddy in the US but he has $80 minimum on international orders so I'd have to get 4 plus postage! Grand total $118 with inevitable duty and £9 handling fee.
I got some used ones........
