Has anyone got an old sub suitable for a TAF or can point me in the direction of a replacement?

Mine still works but is perished all the way around the cone.

Cheers Adie

Damn it initially I thought you wanted to swap a sub for your TAF!! Ha ha.

Sgt GrizZ doesn't have a suitable submarine but could probably lay his hands on a decommissioned russian tank ...any good ?

Any 6.5 inch, 4 ohm speaker should do i believe... apparently the bigger the magnet the better, however i dont think that is gospel

OK, here is the quick and dirty version up to this point:

  • A speaker is an air pump.
  • Polypropylene and rubber are good, pulp and cloth are not. The cap doesn't matter, but the magnet should be average.
  • Double check the dimensions if you want it to fit.
  • To prevent amplifier destruction, speaker impedance must be at least four ohms.
  • If you replace one panel speaker, replace them both.
  • Don't buy a dual cone speaker.

The mounting hardware for the existing 6 inch cabinet speaker lines up nicely with the mounting holes on a more conventionally sized 6-1/2 inch speaker. However, on some woofers the surround may be slightly larger in diameter than the hole in the existing cabinet speaker mounting block (5-5/8 inch), or the surround may project beyond the mounting plane of the speaker. In either of these cases the surround and speaker cone will not be able to move freely due to interference with the mounting block or speaker grille, so you'll need to use a spacer between the speaker and the speaker grille to provide clearance for the surround.

You can also choose to go with a larger woofer than the original cabinet speaker to really showcase the bass effects. A larger speaker can move a greater volume of air than a smaller one, and will typically have a better low-frequency response. For example, a good 6-1/2 inch woofer might respond to frequencies as low as 45 - 50 Hz; a similar quality 8 inch woofer might be able to respond to frequencies of 35 Hz or lower.

Unfortunately, the physical layout of some games precludes the use of a larger woofer: Creature from the Black Lagoon is the best example. The cabinet speaker on Creature is mounted next to the left cabinet wall to provide room for the hologram projection lamp's beam to shine on the rocking mirror assembly; a larger speaker would interfere with the lamp beam. If you have a Creature you're limited to replacing the existing cabinet speaker with a 6-1/2 inch woofer. Check the game-specific information section for a list of other games that present similar issues.

If you do choose to use a larger woofer for the cabinet speaker you should seriously consider enlarging the existing cutout in the cabinet bottom to accommodate the new speaker. The required cutout is usually around 7-1/8 inches in diameter, but check the speaker specification sheet for an exact dimension. The existing cutout is about 5-5/8 inches in diameter; if you don't enlarge the cutout that will restrict the airflow of the new speaker by some thirty percent. This is one reason why I don't like using larger speakers with an adapter plate: the adapter restricts the airflow.

Perhaps more importantly, an adapter plate raises the new speaker at least 3/4 inch higher above the cabinet bottom panel, which increases the chances the speaker magnet will bump into an under-playfield assembly of some type. This can present a problem on some games such as Medieval Madness; check thegame-specific information section for details on games with known cabinet speaker clearance issues.

Thanks for all the help folks, I think i will go with the ebay replacement, cheap price and just a straight swop.

The Russian tank was tempting but may just put too much weight on the floor so i'll pass on that one but thanks anyway sarge!

thanks mate...i am genuinely interested to find out if it makes any difference.

i don't mind spending money but have bought so much **** on impulse over the years thats sat in my garage it's untrue due to hobbies.lol

Wayne,

You sound so much like me with buying crap on impule it,s not real!!! I could do out my garage and fit 3 or 4 pins in there if i could just get rid of the clutter.

Cal, i don't have my games loud, rarely past 9 but i am a bugger for replacing something if it is not right, even if it makes no difference!!!

As soon as it arrives i will let you know.

My previous hobbies include, fast bikes, marine aquariums, poison dart frogs, remote control helicopters etc etc....

I must admit my wife is very patient

Lol

I helped fund my TAF by selling spare motorbike and car parts for vehicles not owned for over 5 years. However a further amount has been spent on spares and ebay 'bargains' that might never go on the machine. All part of the fun.

Anyone who met my missus at Ravs the other week or at Swavesey will know I am a lucky man. She asked me not to play the other day so she could get some practice in without me getting in the way.

My TAF is on 7 most of the time, let me know if it improves the experience for you Adie and then I will consider buying one.

You really need to fit a Pinball Pro ( or equlivent ) to a Addams. It make it seem like a shaker motor has been fitted and improves the game 100%.

SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWTIME.

Dirty Pool Old Man.

Agreed, I have a pinball pro on my LOTR, it makes the whole thing feel like its alive!

I like the idea of pinball pro but don't like the shipping and import costs. I also tend to move pins on every few months so would prefer a cheaper alternative

Ok folks sub speaker fitted at the bargain price of £15.

The first good news was the holes are exactly the same as the stock speaker so it was a 3 minute job, plus no crossovers etc, just a straight swop.

The results, well it does make a difference to my machine, BUT, if you play at normal sound levels you will not notice much if any difference.

Remember the rubber surround on my speaker had totally perished so it was probably more like a tweeter than a woofer.

When i crank mine up it really does hit the volume and it is clear, but i can't think of a time i would ever play it like that unless i really wanted to **** the Mrs and infact the street off.

Also this is a full range speaker, not really what i would call a sub. I use HK subs for my disco and all you hear through them is thump, not really anything else, they come into their own when put with the tops.

So at the end of the day i can play my machine as loud as i would ever want, it sounds better than it did but you won't get the low volume depth i feel you are probably looking for, but for £15 i'm happy.

Any other tests or questions feel free to ask and i will do my best to put your minds at rest.

Cheers Adie
