Heres my STTNG shop log. Thought i'd share it with you in case you were thinking of doing the same. At least there is some point of reference here. There are many more photos but i wont bore you with those. If nothing else, when i come to sell it i can say i did actually strip it to the wood and clean it!! Not like some of those ebay descriptions which basically means, i ran a rag over it as far as i could reach without taking any parts off!!!

It was pretty dirty, especially the ramps and loops which are hard to reach. Ive cleaned the ramps up nice. They are a bit cracked and have ball trails but as long as theyre clean, im not to fussed about flame polishing etc.. I'll only cock it up!!![attachment=960:SNV33170.JPG]

Taking the subways off was daunting but essential if its to stay remotely clean for any amount of time. Every part taken off has been cleaned, including all ball troughs and subway, any VUK cups or coil plungers. Anything which touches the ball basically.

Its all still in pieces, as when i get a spare weekend, i will treasure cove polish the pf. Ive also got the treasure cove backboard decal to install and a slack handful purple cliffy post sleeves to put on.

I'll update it as i go.

Here are the ramps cleaned up: Sorry for grainy i phone pics on those!

The story so far. Will update further when its reassembled.

See some of you at Swavesey work permitting!!

Those ramps look they've come up nice

Look forward to seeing some more pics, any maybe bumping into you at Swavesey. This thread reminded me that I never posted any finished pics in my RS shop log as the missus was out of the country with the good camera at the time....I'll chuck some up in the next few days.

Thanks mate. I'm scheduled to work this weekend but I may be able to make it for a bit at some stage. Typical as I've arranged a complicated logistics chain to pick up a new ball launch wire form from poibug!

Hopefully I'll make it and get to meet you at last!

I always like a full pictures rebuild thread, it can answer so many questions and later help someone locate the correct location for a part.

Those ramps do look refreshed, good work.

Just shopped one also with some help from my daughter, it is a lot of work on one of these, no wonder they weigh the same as a small car, I used a car buffer on mine with some care, saved hours of elbow grease and brought the playfield up a treat, saying that you do need to get it pretty bare for that technique. I also replaced all the plastics while I was at it, made a big difference, would recommend for what they cost.

Yeah those Ramps took over an hour each!! Spray cleaner first to break up the dirt, then wiped down and novus 2 inside and out followed by autosol on any metal parts.

The previous owner hand bought a few new plastics so it has new slings and a few others. Also replaced the trough opto board (blue one) as it was not always recognising ball drains. Hopefully that'll sort it.

Its also just had all 3 flippers rebuilt with new everything and a new dmd. It's also had the translight signed by SR himself at the SCS this year. Should look good when it's finished. Could do with new head decals though.

[attachment=1029:IMG_1470.JPG] Right then. 2 months in pieces on the kitchen floor, a month away in between and the most stressful rebuild to date!! No where near enough pics taken from the correct angles meant ipdb got hammered and where it couldnt provide the answers a giant jigsaw ensued!

Big boo boo was re assembling the subway system, only to realise i hadnt put the ball lane guides back on which required the subway off to put the nuts on!! That didnt **** me off too much, honest!!

Then there was intricate setting up of the launch wire form!! Poibug warned me it was a bastard and he wasn't wrong, must have spent an hour launching balls constantly tweaking the angle to make sure 99% of the balls launched entered the drop hole at the back!

But after about 10 hrs i finally got to properley have a session on sttng! I never really had a good go on it before it got stripped, so it was nice to session it.

Unfortunately i left my camera charger at my mates house (the other side of the country) after i came back off holiday so i had to use i phone pics. So not ideal to show the fruits of my labour but it'll have to do.

Really sad i know but the pf got the 3 stage treasure cove treatement twice (as in each stage twice, not polished then dessimated with gritty cutting polish!!) then the piece de ressistance, the new treasure cove polish wax. Good ****, came up reet nice.

Also installed the back board decal and cliffy purple and orange post sleeves. So here are the finished product and rebuild.

Can relate to a fair bit here.

Wireform can be a major bitch!!!

Polishing kit is good

The backboard decal I had on mine was a great enhancer.Believe my old game is now in Swededn.

Good game, one of my longest owned pins:)

Admit it Gaz,it is annoying fun-you're lovin' it;)

That looks sweet!!!!

Nice work mate.

I might be picking one of these up myself in the next couple of weeks...what are the main things to be aware of when stripping it down and putting it back together? How many of those coloured post sleeves did it need cause they look very cool?

Have you put blue LED's under the mode inserts and where did you get the backboard decal?

Thanks guys. I'm pleased with it.

Yes Poi it was annoying fun. Now it's finished im a bit lost for stuff to do. Congo and sttng have now been fully shopped. I need a new project. But I don't have space or cash to buy another so Congo might be for the chop!

And Mr Splooter! I think it was about 15 purple sleeves. I didn't quite order enough so used orange as well. Might as well just order over and above what u need, get a few different colours too. Then you can put em on your WW and RS.

As for the decal, that game from treasure cove. However I think pinballdecals.com have a few different designs they're all $35 and I tagged onto a mates order to save on postage.

The LEDs are the frosted white ones from Pinball Heaven, they look more blue on the photo than real life. I haven't done the whole pf just the ones which are impossible to reach at the back when everything's assembled and the ones under the subway, together with the main enterprise inserts. There are probably in the region of 50 LEDs in total. I'll do the rest in bits and bobs.

Top tip from me. Don't reassemble the sub way until the ball guides are back on as it covers half the screws you need. Put LEDs in the hard to reach places and test they work correctly before you reassemble. Some of the wedge bulbs are directional so to speak, so you put them in and then they don't work, some require a bit of jiggery pokery to get working!!

And take good notice of how the launch wire form is set up as its a bugger to set up correctly.

Don't be put off by the amount of bits to remove. Can't be much worse than RS with those heads!!

Good luck with it if u get it. It's a great game and the light show is awesome.

Great work, that looks fantastic.

There was an idea to set up a repository of rebuild pictures for machines to help with those "how did that go" moments. Did it happen? These build threads certainly help with that.

great job.

i love threads of this type.

i think there needs to be a seperate section specifically for restore and refurbs with all the pitfalls and tips associated with specific games as it would help others no end.

Yeah, excellent stuff.
biggrin-1.png
Makes it very tempting to treat my ST:TNG to the same but then I'll want to keep hold of it meaning I'll be even more out of pocket
sad-1.png

I couldn't help myself, it's only been in the house a few days and I've already taken STTNG to bits
biggrin-1.png

I won't do another shop log on mine as it's covered with this one although I might chuck a few before and after pics up on this thread if Gaz is cool with that....don't want to hijack your thread mate
smile-1.png

Took Dreads advice and ordered a full set of new plastics and new cannon covers along with a load of smaller bits like new star posts, lane guides etc. Just need to give Cliffy a shout for a load of purple post sleeves.

Finished stripping down the top of the pf today....

A big box of new parts turned up this week as well so I won't have to clean quite as many things as normal
smile-1.png

It's done
biggrin-1.png
It's had the usual strip down and clean, full new plastic set, new cannon cover plastics, all lamps replaced with Pinball Surgery LED's courtesy of Mark Squires (inc GI), purple post sleeves and flippers from Mel at 1stoppinball, new flipper bats, star posts, rollover lane guides etc etc. I'm well pleased with it, plays really fast.....onto the Shadow next

Nice work mate! Looks a knock out. Love those LEDs, I think I'm gonna fit those to the back box. I'm still working up to shopping the RS. Maybe in the winter!!

Can't wait to actually get somewhere with internet so I can download pictures without leaving it overnight! Just ordered a load of bits for mine so will be shopping soon. Are you pleased with the LED's and have you updated your rom's?

Nice one, looks great I think LEDs are the way to go,almost got mine back together spent mst of today doing mine, can't afford LEDs for mine at mo

I'm really pleased with the LEDs and I haven't updated the roms. I haven't noticed any ghosting tbh and they are a really good match for incandescent lamps. If you have a look in the pics at the 2x, 4x, 8x, 10x inserts you can see the difference. The 2x, 4x and Hold Multiplier inserts are lit with Pinball Surgery LEDs while the 8x and 10x are normal white leds from PH. The ones from Mark are a lot warmer, more like normal lamps. I'm definitely gonna get a load more to do the Shadow.
