I just had a game of Tron prematurely end with 1 ball still in play  . I tried to start a new game and got the ' looking for pinballs ' message. I went into coil test and emptied the 4 balls from the trough.....and a MOTH!! little bastard ! no idea how he got in there or how long he's been in there. He quickly found his way out of the coin door though. Oh well, at least the machine doesn't have a fault :)

The term 'bug' came into use with I.T. from cases like this, insects, etc, fouling the electrical contacts
I think that's one of those stories that helps to reinforce the use of the term, rather than being why the term was coined. The word was used in engineering before computerisation, and presumably was used because, as every engineer knows, in certain fields and of sufficient project size, faults are utterly impossible to completely eliminate, and to some degree that's exactly true of bug infestations as well. Have heard tales of the lengths people have to go to in order to get rid of bedbugs.

And because this is a pinball forum, I can even point in a relevant way to that term predating computerisation - Baffle Ball's marketing!
